Your art is so cool!! How did you make the portraits of your Stardew farmer?
Hi anon, thanks!
I make all of my digital art with photoshop. I use the pencil (binary) tool for pixel art.
First thing I did was make a sketch on a 64x64 px canvas. I collected portraits of the villagers so I could match the style as closely as possible.
Then I added base colours, rough shading, a line art layer (yes it looks dumb), and got rid of the sketch layer. Note that there’s no pure black in the portraits. I used dark brown as my darkest colour.
everything else was me drawing on an “overpaint” layer on top of everything else and referencing the original portraits as closely as possible. I don’t have any tips here except to practice pixel art.
to get the frame, I booted up the game, took a screenshot of the dialogue window, and pasted the screenshot into photoshop. Then I erased the character already in the frame.
I took my portrait, scaled it up to exactly 500% (you should only scale pixel art by multiples of whole numbers, x2 x6 etc), and made sure the interpolation was set to “nearest neighbor” so photoshop won’t add anti-aliasing to the drawing when you scale it.
My original (bad) plan to get my farmer’s name was to walk around town screenshotting everyone’s name until I had all the letters I needed. Then Elliot said my name in a dialogue bubble and I screenshotted that instead.
hope that helps!
If you want to do that without the screenshots, Spriters Resource has most of the Stardew Valley assets you can download and edit yourself, including the font!
