There’s this ableist idea that the default is for people to have zero disabilities and mental illnesses. That’s why there’s a concept of there being “too many diagnoses” - because people totally assume there’s like, a Perfectly Normal Human to begin with and that that idealized body has zero brain issues or disabilities.
And that’s so wrong. That’s just as wrong as assuming non-intersex, cishet middle-class white guys are the Perfectly Normal Human of which everyone else is an imperfect copy.
We’re not made from a mould. We have endless variations and they aren’t divergence from some Perfectly Normal Copy, they’re literally the way life functions. There is no perfect copy. There are only variations, some of which have the privilege of being normalized.
But privileged people see themselves as the default, and “too many differences” can seem “made up” to them, because they’re not used to relating to people who are different. Unfortunately we mentally ill/disabled people absorb this idea too and it’s really hard to unlearn it when we’re stuck in a society that’s constantly reinforcing it.
We have to be gentle with ourselves and with each other and work on normalizing variations like mental illnesses, disabilities, etc., so the focus can be on meeting the needs of people who have them instead of just surviving ableism.

next time someone talks about welfare fraud, remember that if you’re homeless you’re not supposed to have food stamps and if you lose your home and don’t report it to DSHS so they can take away your food stamps that’s welfare fraud
when i was on ABD (aged, blind, and disabled benefits – the only cash aid available to disabled people while we’re applying for SSI, a monthly $197) literally all money you get can be deducted from these benefits. this means that if someone sees you digging through the trash for food and gives you $20 the government will only pay you $177 that month. if you don’t report that $20 it’s welfare fraud
astute readers might realise that there’s no way anyone in the country can be expected to live off of $197 a month, and that that would have to be supplemented by another source of income. and if that money is going to disappear as soon as that other source of income hits $197, it might as well not exist. you’re right!
when i was on ABD i had a patreon running that brought in a steady $13 a month. the person in charge of my case rounded up the amount of money i was getting to $15. i was penalised by $15 for making $13.
#republican policy to punish people for being poor and put up barriers to pulling yourself out#and yet we let bankers….#do i even need to say more
actually this is largely due to clinton’s policies. republicans championed and supported them and drummed up the social sentiment behind cutting welfare for Decades. but it’s Clinton’s name who’s on the bill

this is how the privileged, regardless of political party, oppress poor people. (and obviously race, gender, ability, etc. play into who is poor)
this is what an oligarchy looks like. this is what it looks like when people find ways to justify their greed.
america has no freedom. only some people have some freedoms.
I didn’t manage to get many pictures from Star Wars celebration, but here’s a little sneak peak of what my finished Padme costume looks like. Will do a proper photo shoot soon though :)
This is the best description of South Park (and their brand of apathetic conservatism) I ever read.
go the fuck off
🔪🔪🔪 I’ve been waiting for this to be said.
Intelligence is not a redeeming character trait.
I’m really unbelievably tired of (mostly male) characters being “redeemed” from their bad attitudes, bad manners, poor treatment of other characters, etc. by the big reveal of their supposed genius.
Being intelligent (no matter how intelligent) doesn’t make a person worth more than anyone else. It doesn’t excuse any of those things. It isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card for bad behavior, and having other skills (no matter what they are) doesn’t justify never prioritizing learning how to not hurt the people around them.
It’s not an excuse.
And I think this is especially important to bring up for (mostly white) male characters, because actual men outside of fiction are excused by society in the same way that narratives excuse them in fiction. As long as they’re perceived by society as being “more important” than other people (which they already are by default if they’re men, and even more so if they’re white, etc.), any inappropriate, harmful, or offensive behavior toward other people is excused.
The excuses are always that it would be “hard” for someone who is SO INCREDIBLY GIFTED to… be kind? Show compassion? Consider the effects of their actions on others and act accordingly?
It’s bullshit.
Fundamentally the trope is ableist (by basing someone’s worth around their mental capacity), with undertones of classism and racism (in the same ways that IQ tests are classist and racist), and it perpetuates a narrative of male privilege and entitlement.
And by the way, if you were reading this post and thinking “It this about [specific male character who does this]?” then the answer is yes.
please tag your Adam Sandler as gore

It all just feels like so much work all the time. I don’t want to deal with this stuff! I have other things to think about!
Related: Trans people aren’t ‘obsessed’ with bathrooms, we don’t care about bathrooms ‘too much’. We want to not care about bathrooms at all. You’re the the weird ones obsessed with bathrooms. Don’t put that on us.

Mandatory attendance polices discriminate against disabled and mentally ill students, who end up losing points for reasons outside of their control regardless of their overall performance.
*Drum solo*
They are also actively dangerous to students with suppressed immune systems, for example those with HIV/AIDS, lupus, or who are fighting cancer, because it exposes them to sick people who should not be in class.
*Dives off the stage and crowd surfs*
If you care about disabled students, if it is at all within your power you will not require mandatory attendance, especially on lecture days.
