i. amber karev / headcanon 001 !
RE : PERSONALITY .
amber karev is your typical tomboy. from a young age she was roughing it with her older brothers and spent a lot of time on the streets with her friends who were mostly boys. her home life was never civil and both of her parents struggled with mental illnesses ( alcoholism and schizophrenia ) and her father was abusive. it was typical of amber to spend her time skateboarding or reading up a tree out of sight and away from the constant yelling of her household. she’s what could be described as ‘rough around the edges’ and often is seen with band-aids covering skateboard injuries. amber is quick to fire back like her older brother alex and suffers from borderline personality disorder that was triggered from the neglect and abuse she suffered as a child. she is romantic at heart but feels the entire concept is a hopeless one. she speaks fluent sarcasm and her tone often has a bite to it. her defense mechanism is pretending that her feelings aren’t there. beneath that, amber is a considerate, compassionate, caring, hopelessly romantic and hilarious woman who is intelligent, witty and driven.
RE : ALEX LEAVING.
when her older brother alex left, amber karev was eleven years old. she looked up to alex and relied on him for everything she should have been able to rely on her parents for. every morning she would stand on the stool she used to reach the bathroom sink and beg alex to put a dutch braid in her hair, which he had learnt to do specially for her. alex would be the only person to stand up to their abusive father for her, the only person to intervene. he was the only person to help amber with her homework and cook her dinner when their father was on a bender and their mother was too ill to move from her bed.
when alex packed his bags for iowa, amber put up every possible protest to try and get him to stay or take her with him; she hid his suitcases and unpacked them after he’d spent hours packing, amber had told him lies about ‘bad people’ living in iowa and had even resulted in expressing her fear of what would happen without him there to protect her. but, he still packed his bags and eventually walked out their front door and headed off to university in iowa.
alex leaving impacted amber in countless ways. at the age of eleven, amber had to learn how to take care of herself. she had to learn how to cook, how to do her own laundry, how to do her own hair, how to do her homework without any help, how to pack her own lunches and stand up to their father when he decided to stumble home. when alex left, he took a piece of amber with him. he took the little girl who always wore a dutch braid in her hair, who used to feel safe and happy.
eventually, amber saw the harsh reality of what her life had become and what families were supposed to be like; she wound up resenting her own and questioning why she didn’t have people who loved her. eventually, alex stopped calling and she questioned if she had meant anything to her older brother at all. it left her with a sense of ‘people always leave’ and a nagging voice in her head that convinced her that all of it — her mother being sick, aaron getting sick, her father being a drunk and alex leaving — was all because of her. that she ruined everything she touched.
❛ oh my god! you still haven’t told her your dad is a total sleaze, have you? ❜ alison was smiling, despite the situation being completely and utterly far from humorous. with a flick of her expensively highlighted and perfectly curled hair alison looked down at aria with a stern look, ❛ you need to do it soon, aria, before someone else does. –– how would mommy dearest feel if she found out you knew this entire time and didn’t tell her? ❜
