How many pages do you think The Stars We Avoid will be?
I did a quick export, and it's saying around 460 pages, but that could change whenever proper formatting is done! I'll be happy to give the exact word count whenever it's finalized!
I’ve done some deep dives into copyright laws—just in case—for my own sanity.
But then I remember that none of that research matters because The Love Hypothesis cover literally has Reyl* art on it and every Drami*ne book has magic racism.
how do you pronounce Lockett? Is it different than lock-et?
It’s just pronounced Locket!
I know I changed their names a few times but I’ve stuck with Lockett since it’s an English surname that’s used as their middle name!
I like to refer to TSWA as my "silly sci-fi book," as if the ending doesn't cause me physical pain on a daily basis.
I’m super excited for the Starline Files to come out, it’s been my most anticipated book since last year, from what you’ve shared about the story I’m super invested in the lore of this world and how everything works
I had two quick questions
One I’m not sure if you’ve mentioned it before but what was the name of D’rithe’s race of people?
And Two are you planning on adding any other alien races to the story?
Love your character designs, keep up the incredible work
WAHHH THANK YOU SM!! It means the world to me that some people are excited to read my silly sci-fi story. My editor said the worldbuilding was one of my strong suits, so I’m hoping others like it too!
1.) They're j'une (pronounced like the month)
2.) If there were plans to add more, I couldn't say.... Just know that my wife is also a character designer for the series, so they'd make some very hot aliens if given the chance.
And if I said the whole goal of SLF is to create a unique story/IP while also having all the relationships deteriorate to the point where it ends up with the same dynamics as the OG Locket comics, then what? Every time a Locket comic comes up on my feed, I'm like, UGH!! I need to recreate that same drama!!!

I hope everyone reads my foreshadowing and by the end of the book goes: "OH FUCK OFF."
Hello Sawyer!
Hope your day is going well. Less traditional ask but I wanted to inquire how you improved your writing or how you even keep up with it when (or if) you experience writers block?
Thank you!
Honestly, from last year to now, I think consistency has been my main source of improvement, and I really think it comes down to repeatedly looking at one body of work.
When I was writing fanfiction, I would write everything in one sitting without thinking. I really just wrote whatever came to mind and posted it soon after lol. Which ended up being how I did my first draft.
Line editing kicks my ass! Really, it makes you think about things you don't want to think about: repeated words, sentence flow, sentence length, character voice. It is not for the weak… or at least not for someone who loves to write without thinking about all those things.
Keeping up with it is a lot easier when I'm really excited about a project and have self-imposed deadlines, like my developmental edit or self-publishing timeline. Some days, I do not want to write at all! Even when I don't want to, I try to aim for 200 words or at least line-edit a few paragraphs. My wife and I can get pretty busy on days they have off... (I'm 15 days behind my line-edits.)
As far as writer's block goes, daydreaming has always been the thing that encourages me to write. Making up AMVs in my head is something I've always done, and since I can't animate, it works better if I take the time to write instead. I also write down every thought I have in my notes app. Literally every cool line I think I can add, every character detail. And within each phase of the drafting process, I find a way to incorporate it. Knowing when to cut things, though? That's rough.
Also, reading will make your writing so much better! Good books, bad books, both help you understand what you like when it comes to storytelling and writing techniques. I'm most motivated when I read a book I think is awful. That's how TSWA was born, anyway… my hater-self.
Personally, I know my prose isn't the prettiest, but I try to add some nice sentences here and there to improve it. But if my style isn't beautiful, then it's really not that big of a deal.
I think everyone has different goals. As long as you're doing what makes you happy, I'd say that's great!
If you are planning to get a new/coverup tattoo what will is it going to be?
I adored how the original turned out, but I understand you might want a new one now, take care! 💛
I actually don’t plan to get it covered up! It’s too big and it’s actually still special to me (even if everyone thinks it’s bumblebee).
I just get depressed when I see it when I’m having a particularly bad day. Not worth covering up, though. If anything, I’d love to get a comic panel done on my upper arm to match it.
TSWA art done by nae_ella!
I haven't written in days. I've been on Canva fighting for my fucking life.
i dont really draw anymore
I love these little aliens and I love the story so far (even if we don’t know much, but I get it, can’t spoil all the fun!). I was wondering if you have any fun facts to feed us? :>c
Thank you so much! I just finished draft 5, and I'm really happy with how the story has been shaping up. I'll be polishing the prose next and then sending it off to beta readers soon.
I do feel a bit bad, though. I'm not sure what spoiler-free things I can share. I guess I should mention that the majority of the story is just Rachel and D'Rithe being weird roommates. They're oddly domestic, despite their relationship beginning with a kidnapping...
I'm also excited for people to see the vague star-based religion I made. I don't even think it has a name yet, but D'Rithe became much more religious than I originally intended. I think that aspect will be explored more in later books, though.
Oh! I decided to split the story into three sections since each has its own distinct feel:
Part 1: On Holiday Part 2: Missed Appointments Part 3: Congratulations
Happy 2-year anniversary to SLF
