have you heard the post going around about an indiedev having their story and worldbuilding leaked due to google's AI, gemini, stealing it from their google drive/docs? do you have alternatives to something like google docs that can safely auto-save wips and be accessed offline?

I have never heard of it but a lot of people say ellipsus is a good alternative

I also recommend Libreo ffice which is where all my works live before I post to AO3. Libre office is free and offline, it is very similar to Google Docs if you are concerned about literacy moving over.

Also remember for your Google accounts, you have to disable AI in THREE places as it is automatically turned on for all Google Account.

Fanfic writers, reblog if you’re okay with people sharing the links to your fics to their friends and/or for fic rec posts without having to ask for your permission first

(I saw a debate about whether or not it was okay for people to share fic links around without asking the authors first, since some authors may not be comfortable with the links to their fics being shared around on twitter or tumblr. so I thought this post could be a blanket permission for authors who were okay with the links to their fics being shared around!)

How to submit prompts on an AO3 prompt challenge

First, head to the link for the AO3 collection, link at the bottom of the post. Next, under ‘Dashboard’, press ‘Sign Up’ under the name of the collection to the right.

It will give you the following form:

Fandom: This works through AO3′s auto-fill function, you type in the fandom that this prompt adheres to - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling - and select the correct one in the drop-down menu.

Character: For this fest, you can leave this space blank.

Relationship: For this fest, you can leave this space blank.

Description: This is where you put in your prompt (a name, pairing, number, a one sentence summary) for your fic

Semi-anonymous prompt?: You need to tick this box. 

AO3 says: 'Semi-anonymous' means that your prompt will be displayed as 'anonymous'; however, since it will still be linked in the database with your username, we can't guarantee 100% anonymity - in some circumstances, such as a coding bug, it might be accidentally revealed or guessable. (We've put a lot of work into minimising the risk, but we want to be sure that our users are completely informed about their levels of privacy.)

And lastly, on the bottom right; Add another request: Do you want to do another prompt? Press this button and the page will expand to let you add another. (You can do this at any time by clicking ‘My Prompts’ on the collection page then selecting ‘Edit Sign-Up’)

When you are done, press Submit and your prompt will go live. You then claim it as normal on the collection page. You MUST claim your own prompt.

After your prompt is up, you can go back in and edit it if you want to change it, or edit your entire sign-up (aka all your prompts.) 

If you want to add another prompt after you have already submitted one, simply go to ‘My Prompts’ on the collection page then select ‘Edit Sign-Up ’and press “Add another request?” at the bottom. It’ll let you submit more prompts (up to five). Remember you must claim all your own prompts.

sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.

you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.

ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.

ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.

there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.

it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.

also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.

if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.
