MY ROYAL NEMESIS 멋진신세계 (2026), Ep. 08
it's almost summer do you guys want my stupid hyperoptimized lemonade recipe that takes half a day to make and whips absolute ass
Fruited Lemonade That Makes You Reconsider It All
ingredience:
lemons/limes (this needs to make up the bulk of the fruit being used, like at least 80%)
whatever other fruits or fruit scraps you want, plus any herbs/other flavorings you want to try. by fruit scraps I mean things like cherry pits, apple peels, pineapple cores, strawberry ends, things like that.
granulated white sugar, the coarser the better, 50% by weight of total citrus rinds + 100% by weight of any additional fruit. you'll measure this after you prep the fruit.
water as needed
equipment:
a few nonmetallic mixing bowls
a mesh strainer
a chinoise, ricer or some cheesecloth
a kitchen scale
a citrus juicer or reamer (manual or electric)
a potato masher
juice the citrus through a strainer - saving all rinds - and refrigerate the juice for the time being. dice the rinds and other fruits if any, keeping the rinds separate. make note of weights, and measure your sugar.
Place sugar in a large nonmetallic bowl. If using non-citrus fruits and/or any other flavorings, mix them in with the sugar and mash with potato masher. add diced citrus rinds, mix thoroughly, and mash again. cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 4 hours. this allows the sugar to draw out flavors that would otherwise get discarded with the rinds, and the rinds' acids should be enough to dissolve the sugar into a syrup.
Afterward, mash one last time, then collect the syrup by pressing the macerated mixture through a strainer/chinoise or ricer, or squeeze it through cheesecloth. if you want, this can be saved as a standalone syrup at this point, for use in cocktails or desserts. if not, slowly pour the reserved juice through the solids to to help get the remaining syrup out, and squeeze/press again. do the same thing one more time with warm water (roughly the same amount of water as juice). discard solids (or try making sangria with them!).
taste the mixture and add more water if necessary. a stronger mix is totally fine if you anticipate serving over ice on a hot day, or adding booze, or if there was a lot of non-sour fruit. keep in mind that it will taste a bit less sweet once it's chilled. pour into a pitcher and refrigerate.
citrus oils will float to the top, so stir/shake before serving. love you. enjoy.
some tried and true flavor combos:
straight lemon or lime, or any combination of the two, is of course an untouchable classic
lemon & strawberries (that's pussy babe!)
lemon & orange with a hint of vanilla (creamsiclemonade...?)
lemon & apples or apple peels with cinnamon/ginger/allspice (for late summer)
some cocktail type combos, booze optional:
lemon or lime & berries with basil + gin
lime & mint + white rum
lime & ginger + dark rum
lime & cucumber + gin
lime & orange (berries optional) + tequila
lemon, orange & cherry + brandy, bourbon, or rye whiskey
holy gods
Since we're nearing the end of IDOL I, I have to give kudos to whoever did location scouting and found Sena's house. That house is just so perfect and is a character in itself, breathing and influencing key moments. It has a Presence. It's just really excellent.

sena is so right about how raik always is pretty straight forward with his feelings and how he feels. he was enver someone who has been able to hide it (which may also lead to him not being a good actor or how easily the fans misread his behavior). but him blunting out "should we stay here one more night" was so obvious i had to laugh but he did said he was going all in with his emotions and in a landscape of male leads that seem to hide under stoic faces and hidden love gestures, it's so nice to see a male lead that is pretty straight forward.
SIR YOURE BEING INDICTED FOR MURDER? ONE STEP CLOSER TO JAIL???? WHY R U SMILING AND BITING YOUR LIP RN ? PRIORITIES????
idol i is unexpectedly one of the best kdramas i've watched in recent months???
it has pointed commentary on the relationship between fans and their idols, leads that feel complex and multifaceted as opposed to having one defining Personalty Trait, a murder plot that's managed to keep me guessing for 10 episodes now and amidst that they're managing to develop a romance plot that doesn't feel clunky and manages to have me giggling and kicking my feet each episode
Even without the romance, Idol I is so much about people helping people who desperately need it and then someone being there for them when they fall. The defence lawyer helped Se-na's father and then she joined his firm and got him out of debt. Se-na saving Chung-Jae and gaining someone who looks out for her. Ra-ik saving Se-na who grows up to save him and now he's saving her. The restaurant owner who fed a little kid without any expectation of return. And none of these people did it for gain, but just because they wanted to help.
It's a very heart-warming message about the good that is done coming back to you in unexpected ways and I love that.

MAENG SENA — IDOL I (EP.08)
Thing I loved from Idol I - episode 8
The whole confession scene is so lovely, but one of my favourite things is how the conversation starts.
Do Raik casually brings up how much money she must have spent on the merch. It seems like he's joking but he's also completely serious.
We have seen how all of his close relationships revolve around finance. How much money he makes vs how much money he costs. He's directly told he has to be worth the money people spend on him as a child and that message has been reinforced ever since. He is constantly treated like his only value is monetary and he has no personhood outside of being a product. His wish isn't for artistic recognition and success but for money because that means he has worth as a person.
The aggressive fan in episode one says he owes her because she spent so much money on him. She breaks into his house to take what she is owed.
So when he's had some time to process Sena's fan status, he realises 'wow - she spent heaps on me' and money equals the closest thing to love this guy has known previously.
But Sena dismisses that. 'It wasn't that much'/it wasn't about the money.
The thing Sena values most is the intangible gift of that afternoon. He sang to her and comforted her and gave her a hat, and that song and that kindness was the thing that gave her back her will to live. She loves the person who reached out to a severely depressed teenager and did their best to cheer her up. She loves who he was before he was famous.
To Sena, money isn't love. Love is love.
If you look at the synopsis of Idol I and only look at the synopsis, it does very much sounds like a trashy Wattpad y/n novel written by a thirteen year old. Like, and someone else said this first, it really does give "my parents sold me to one direction." But it's also just very well written. There's still four episodes left, but so far the pacing has been great and the characters are well written and well developed that its easy to forget how fanfiction-y the plot is.
(Though to be fair, some of the best pieces of writing you will ever read are written by a thirteen year old fanfiction writer. But I've never read any fanfic with real life celebrities, let alone a self-insert/y/n one with real people so I can't vouch for those specifically.)
anyway jokes aside it’s so sweet seeing how these two have been there and have been helping each other out from the very beginning, from when they were complete strangers - they’ve both been there for each other even when they didn’t actively know it
when they first met ra-ik saw himself in se-na, and that’s what pushed him to try and help - and once he was done and had saved her from doing the unthinkable, he realised he is capable of reaching out to someone, of having his heart touch another with his music
and in turn it saves him, it fuels him to keep going >
just like his singing is what pushed her to keep going, to live and thrive
and now, meeting as idol and fan, se-na sees herself and her history in ra-ik, sees the unjust way he’s being hunted down as a suspect even though he’s repeatedly trying to prove his innocence
just like with her dad. and though she regrets never having been able to believe her dad while he was alive, she now has a chance to not only believe but to actively save this person she loves from going down the same path
they’re both constantly saving each other, simultaneously
who's cutting onions here.
