Omg am I writing a thing for Tumblr? Yes I am but it will be sadly shorter than my meta of old. Maybe I'll write one of my huge posts after I see FS2. Probably a post mortem on my overall Makoto arc feels.
Anyway, we're here to talk MakoRin!
I realized I never really discussed the MakoRin moment in FS1. I know I've been kinda soured on MR and MHR post-DF. But I actually did really like this moment because it wasn't Rin helping Makoto, it was the other way around this time. And that was important.
It was a great callback to the awesome scene in ES where Rin wants to check on Makoto and see if he's decided on his future. I always loved that because I always loved how much Rin pushes Makoto to think more about himself and his own path. Not just about Haru.
This aspect was actually handled really well in FS1, where Makoto tells Rin that he's less shy because of knowing him and that Rin has helped him grow. And it's just such great validation of a friendship that once meant so much to me in the days of Utsumi's Free.
But even more than that, I really like that Makoto sought Rin out because he knew he was upset. And that Rin calls him on it, saying he used his intuition. It's really cute and shows they BOTH think about each other, beyond Haru. They have their own friendship too. ;;
I really liked that Makoto straight up tells Rin he's worried about him. Which gets the cutest "thanks" from Rin. Again, I just like them having a reciprocal relationship instead of Rin always having to do everything. That has long been my MakoRin complaint.
That Rin cares more about Makoto than Makoto cares about him. So I'm really happy this movie FINALLY showed that Makoto cares just as much about Rin. ;; I also liked Rin telling Makoto how much he means to him too. "I'm also really glad you were there back then, Makoto."
I like that Rin talks about Makoto supporting him in his own way too. (I would argue I would have liked to have *SEEN* more of this, but it's nice to know it was there.) It's just great to see them talk on this level with one another again.
It helps erase the gross taste DF gave me, when it implied that Makoto was jealous of RH. I hated that so much. So this casual friendly heart-to-heart was really good for my long buried (but still there) MakoRin feels.
And as always Rin still uses his chance to buck Makoto up, saying Makoto's kids would be lucky to have Makoto as a teacher. Just daww.
Of course you also have the classic Rin feeling comfortable with sharing his future plans with Makoto, a callback to Makoto doing the same with him in ES. You know, I love callbacks. So yeah FS1 was great payoff for this nuanced and often forgotten friendship.
It's short and we don't really get much else from them, but it was VERY SATISFYING and I look forward to maybe more of them in FS2. Thank you, FS1, for making me believe in MakoRin again. ;;b
even just platonically. their relationship is underrated and not talked about enough. like, makoto was just as affected with rin's departure back when they were kids, but no one really acknowledges it (same w nagisa but that's a whole other thing)
they're always so at peace when they're together, honestly. they probably find it easy to be in each other's space and talk about things they normally wouldn't to their default best friends because there's this sort of understanding between them they won't find in sousuke and haru. it's comfortable because they don't have these super high expectations of each other unlike with rin-sousuke-rin or makoto-haru-makoto.
romantically, it's similar, a gradual thing where makoto probably fell first but didn't say anything because of his insecurities and how he maybe thought that rin liked haru, but rin likes him just as much and just as long as makoto has. but it's never awkward between them (except their first kiss and first time)
it's just easy
they find it so natural to love one another and to be each other's person. they're the perfect balance of solitude and spontaneity.
like, idk, makoto and rin's love for each other is as natural as breathing and it just works.
they love and care so fiercely for their friends too so you can imagine if it was for each other. their communication would also be one of the best out of the ships because like i said, they find it easy to open up to one another.
but yeah
bottomline, makorin is underrated. they have a lot of great things platonically and romantically.

Makoto sets his bag down on the table with a sigh that’s about 70% disappointed, 20% impressed, and 10% done with everything. Rin gives him a toothy grin filled to the brim with innocence and charm and Makoto doesn’t buy it for a second. But he still gives Rin a small smile. Because it’s Rin and Makoto can’t help but smile when Rin looks at him like that.
“I’m still upset with you.”
Rin pouts at his words.
“But—”
“You can’t just turn into a bat and fly away when you don’t want to deal with things!”
“I mean. Clearly I can.”
Makoto gives him a look. The same look he usually gives his students when they’re misbehaving and that he almost always gives Nagisa and Haru when they start whispering plans to each other when they think he’s not listening.
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” Makoto drops into the chair across from Rin. “You left me there. With a crying Momo.”
“I don’t know what to do with a crying Momo!”
“Neither do I!” Makoto huffs and drops his face into his bag with a groan. He had spent forty minutes trying to calm Momo down enough to get the story out of him and then another forty-five minutes talking him through what he was going to do next and how he could get Ai to forgive him for ruining his outfit for the party tonight.
Rin reaches over and runs his fingers through Makoto’s hair and he immediately starts to relax. He’d known Rin was magic the moment they met and he’s never happier to have been right as he is in moments like these. When Rin can relax him with a simple touch.
“Would you forgive me if I said I stopped by Sousuke’s and got you one of his specialty secret menu hot chocolates?”
Makoto hums in consideration and moves his head enough to squint over at Rin. He’s forgiven Rin already. Not because of the hot chocolate or the magic touches. But simply because Rin is smiling at him with that soft smile of his and even if he does turn into a bat and fly away when he doesn’t want to deal with things Makoto always knows where to find him: here in Makoto’s house. It’s Rin’s safe place, the place he hides out, the place he returns to after a long day, the place he goes to when he doesn’t know where else to turn.
“I’ll forgive you if you come to the party with me tonight and stay with me the whole time. No turning into a bat and flying back here just because someone wants to dance with you or asks you a question about me.”
Rin groans. “Can’t you forgive me because of the hot chocolate? It’d be easier.”
“The hot chocolate is a good start, love. But the party is what will earn you my forgiveness.”
I've been binge reading fics a lot lately and I find it funny that it is rin who almost always thinks that "an evil makoto is threat to humanity" like it appears in at least 5 separate fics that I've read where rin ponders that the world would be in danger had makoto been a bad person- or something like that- because of his charm alone and his ability to unconsciously make people bend to his requests, and it's good to see where despite makoto's insecurity about how he'll never be good as rin, rin acknowledges makoto's "power" that he is unaware he possesses and his authority that he never puts to practice but is absolute when makoto needs or wants; i mean rin caved in to a smiling makoto in a drama cd and they were just dealing with CATS!!!
Talking about the possibility of an evil Makoto is always interesting because he uses so many of his skills already to make people trust him that purposefully using those for chaos could be messy. We’ve briefly talked about Makoto as a powerhouse and a villain before, and I can agree with the take that he could be manipulative and devastating in the wake of getting what he wants; we’re lucky that most of the time, the things he wants are positive, or he prioritizes peace/people over those other desires. I’ve noticed that trend in a few fics too, where Rin makes note of how scary-good Makoto can be at persuading and convincing others to do things. I think that comes from an important part of Rin and Makoto’s friendship in canon that gets overlooked: he recognizes Makoto as someone with so much potential for individual greatness. His friends and other people around him express gratitude and have faith in him, sure, but a lot of the compliments he gets relate back to how good he is at helping others (being a good brother, a good friend, a good leader, a good teacher, etc.). Besides Haru’s whole “Makoto is Makoto” speech and that phone call with Goro from DttF (need to rewatch it, but the one where he talks about being proud of Makoto), Makoto isn’t specifically recognized as somebody powerful until Rin talks about Makoto needing to consider scouts looking at him in ES. Even after Makoto has started letting go of any hopes of swimming competitively beyond high school and is looking more and more into a dream built around supporting others, Rin steps in to say that Makoto could be a contender in that world, if it was something he wanted.
This might be something to talk about in a separate post, but Makoto’s insecurities and jealousies regarding Rin get interpreted into fics in… somewhat weird ways?? Like I get how it was so vaguely referenced in the show that it became a detail for people to latch onto in Makoto-related ship fics (I see it in older makoharu fics a lot, but I’m sure it’s in soumako or makorin fics as well). It’s a fine interpretation to use in stories, the idea that Makoto is envious of Rin’s importance/position in someone’s life, but I personally don’t see that jealousy in canon as really having to do with Rin specifically. It feels removed from jealousy aimed at a specific individual, and more of this confusing feeling of “I wish I could have that self-assured nature, I wish I could have a clear direction to take, I wish I could have a path that aligned more with what my friends will end up doing… but that’s not in the cards for me right now and I need to make peace with that.” People who’ve taken steps towards majors or career paths that are supportive in nature (teachers, social workers, caretakers, etc) can probably relate to that sort of internal struggle, where it’s not like you don’t want to have a dream that helps people, but the whole “those who can, do; those who can’t, teach” mindset grates at your self-esteem a little more than usual, and you wonder what it’d be like to take on a path that involves a little more personal glory.
Many thoughts, many thoughts. Makoto is a puppet master and it’s fun considering what he can do with such power.
