-Raised in the Upper East Side district of Manhattan, Laurie was born into privilege but it came with the cost of having a very strict upbringing -It reflected the upbringing of her parents, who both had strict families themselves that strived to be successful and they wanted that for their children -Due to this importance of success, Laurie was always the smart girl, in a lot of clubs and she was also class president in high school, something no one in their class was surprised by -Even when her parents divorced while she was in high school, Laurie didn’t let the sadness and stress of that deter her, and it made her even more determined -Laurie was always good about hiding things, keeping things bottled up inside so no one could see behind the walls, and then someone came along who brought cracks in the mask -Adrien Russell had been a shock since the contrast between him and her was night and day, and even her friends were stunned by the way Laurie seemed to allow herself to let loose -Laurie let herself lose control for a time, which was already an unnatural thing for her in itself; guess you could say he made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter (im sorry) -Adrien was also the one who told her about the supernatural world, in usual Adrien fashion by slipping up in conversation -It was true that she loved him, but the devil on her shoulder ultimately came back to snap her back to reality -In the end, she broke up with him; she needed to move on cause he was a sk8r boi and she said see you later boi -But Laurie really just decided she needed to focus on herself and get back on track because in her mind, college and her future career was more important than a relationship -That was what she told herself, but maybe another reason was because she felt the pressure from family and friends, most of which were never fans of Adrien -Her mother especially didn’t care for the boy, thinking he was just a rebel who would merely distract her daughter from her full potential, so she for one was ecstatic when Laurie ended things with him -Even with the supernatural world around her, Laurie still doesn’t seem to put too much attention into it; if anything, she tends to go on her business as if she truly knew nothing -She currently attends Columbia University, double majoring in chemistry and physics; she also plans on getting her Masters afterward, determined for her career to be a successful one -They always say perfection is unobtainable, but maybe Laurie is too scared to really let that thought simmer; she says she’s doing it for herself, but maybe it’s more for her family and the need to prove herself to them -Even though her parents aren’t together anymore, both are still in her life one way or another, pushing her to do better whether by texts and calls or the thoughts in her head

“In a place like that, it’s a miracle no one’s spilling more than just drinks. I’ve seen people mix liquor and toss things back like it’s water,” He pointed out, a small shake of his head. “I mean, I wasn’t thrilled to be wet the second half of the night, but it comes with the territory of an open bar and… whatever the hell that music was. It had people dancing like animals.”

He had a poor sense of personal space, his curiosity always getting the better of him. He peered over her shoulder and on to whatever was on display at the booth. “What’re you looking at here?”

“True,” Laurie admitted, but looking highly amused when he mentioned the way people had been jiving around on the dance floor. “People?” She cocked an eyebrow but then couldn’t hold back her laughter. “I seem to distinctly remember you being one of the liveliest bunch there too, so.” She noticed the way his attention went past her, and Laurie blinked before looking over her shoulder. “Oh, I was looking at their handmade jewelry. They’re pretty.”

BECCA’S BROWS FURROW TOGETHER, not knowing where laurie was taking this. but she laughs as she does because she’s right. “that would put such a damper on this,” becca muses, and she guesses she’ll accept not having stars for this. “it is nice weather. even if it’s chilly, but that makes the experience that much better.”

A damper was an understatement. Whenever there were outside events like that, bad weather was always the bane of everyone’s existence. Things would just be ruined, so Laurie was fine with missing a star show. “Honestly, I’m so used to this kind of weather that I’m not that fazed by it anymore,” Laurie admitted with a laugh. “I mean, I’d definitely be shaking in my boots right about now if I were from further South, I guess, but I’m not.”

That was just the problem. Maybe being uptight and stressed about things like that wasn’t a way to live, but Laurie was probably too much of a coward to really let loose again. She used to, for a time, but that was before. “Grad school is definitely the plan,” she muttered, more to herself but kept listening to Alejandra with a soft sigh. “I guess so.” A blunt answer, probably because Laurie knew trying to justify herself would fail. Ale would probably keep countering her. “Sure, we can walk around. And I’m always down for shopping too.”

Rhine’s focus had brushed over her briefly, trying to place her outside of the fluttering lights of Siren. Her short curls were just as dark as he remembered, but they still caught the twinkling reflection of the strung up lights around the market.

“No kidding,” He grinned. “I was wondering if I’d run you into you there again, but I’m guessing you decided it really wasn’t your scene.”

It was surprising to see him there, probably because her mind had been conditioned to associate him with club dancing and loud music. But he went and mentioned a similar thing about her, about how that scene was definitely not her forte. “Good observation,” Laurie smirked before nodding in confession. “Yeah, you’d be right. It wasn’t too bad, though. If I spilled a drink on anyone else, they may not have been so casual about it, so.”

HER HEAD IS TILTED UP TOWARDS THE SKY, and she furrows her brows for a moment. “you know, it’s kind of a shame that we can’t see the stars.” that’s the one thing she misses about her hometown, at least she could see the night sky most days. “i feel like that would heighten the ambience of it all.”

Taking a sip of her drink, Laurie raised an eyebrow in wonder before following Becca’s gaze up at the huge dark canvas above their heads. “I guess so. But on the other hand, it could always be worse too,” she pointed out with a laugh. “We could be standing under a group of dark clouds with the threat of a storm. If I’m going to be at an outside event for a while, I’ll take clear skies every time, even without the stars.”

No longer was Laurie caught in a rave atmosphere where she could barely hear anyone and flashing lights were a little too blinding. Sure, the market was crowded and the typical sounds of the cityscape existed, but it was a more relaxing scenario for her tastes. She had been stepping around, stopping by a few booths here and there. And then someone caught her eye, someone she could’ve sworn she’d seen before. Then it hit her, and Laurie raised an eyebrow as she turned more toward him. “Oh,” she began. “Hey. Small world?” She offered with a laugh.

Laurie took a bite of the big, soft pretzel she had recently bought from a booth. It was salty, but it wasn’t overbearing either. She glanced across the table at Ale. “One of my professors told us to go out and have fun here,” she explained, gesturing around to the market atmosphere surrounding them and everyone else in the proximity. “So... I’m going to try to do just that,” Laurie promised, trying to convince herself to not think about anything else for the time being. “Anything specific you want to do next?”

The ice rink already seemed fairly filled, especially with the amount of children who had convinced their families to go onto the ice with them. Laurie leaned against the edge of the rink, still deciding whether or not she really wanted to get out there right now. She was holding the skates she had rented, glancing toward someone who was near her. “If you don’t already have a pair, you’re more than welcome to take mine,” Laurie offered. “If they fit. I’m not sure if I’m going out right now.”

“ SO YOU ONLY SAW THEM ON THE GROUND, after the fact ? ” he reiterates, making sure he’s hearing her clearly. “ where in new york were you exactly ? i’ve heard manhattan was hit the most, but there was some scattered crows around the other borough. ” scattered crows, as if it’s some kind of new weather trend.

“Yes, after the fact,” Laurie confirmed his reiteration, knowing he was just making sure that could clearly be picked up on the recording and everything too. “I was in Queens that night,” she told them, but nodded at Elijah’s own explanation. “Yeah, it wasn’t as substantial as it was in Manhattan, you’re right. They really weren’t dropping for a long amount of time, it was just a few times after that where I was.” She could only imagine how bad it was at the actual gala. Honestly, it was a pretty event but Laurie was glad she wasn’t there.

“Got it,” Delia said while nodding. So the woman’s face was not expected to be a recurrence. Bummer. She usually looked out for more women like her in her neighborhood, considering the rapid gentrification. She smiled at the woman softly. “Well, my name’s Delia. Ya know, just in case you wanted to venmo me for my good deed,” she joked.

Honestly, Laurie didn’t tend to spend much time anywhere other than around Manhattan. She’d visit the other boroughs if it was with friends, and she used to hang out in Staten Island with her ex alot. But nowadays, it was usually just on Columbia’s campus, in some of the libraries, or her condo. “It’s nice to meet you, I’m Laurie,” she told them, and laughed at the joke. “Hey, I really should, though. That would’ve been a disaster, you really saved me there.”

he was admittedly a bit nervous , for laurie had always been put on a PEDESTAL for him , and adrien always wondered how he snagged such a girl , even if it were only for a short amount of time . so he finds himself worried , here , in front of the girl who he used to love so deeply that’s now been reduced to … this . adrien rubs the back of his head , at least looking a bit sheepish . ‘ i was , ah , wondering how you were doing with this whole DEAD BIRD thing . it’s pretty creepy , right ? just wanted to make sure you were okay … ’

Laurie had always known where she stood with Adrien, as he had always reminded her constantly about holding her in high regard. It was sweet, of course, and she knew he loved her just as she had loved him. But looking back, maybe he had focused on her a little too much, so much that he neglected to focus on himself. Sometimes that was more important since it helped with personal growth. But that wasn’t the topic of concern right now, Laurie listening as he brought up the crow situation that had taken over the city.

“Oh, that? Creepy is one word to put it, yeah.” She laughed softly, shaking her head. “I’m okay, I promise,” she told him with a smile. She studied Adrien for a few seconds before glancing over her own shoulder. “Would you like to come in?” Laurie asked, seeming to accept that maybe company could be nice since she didn’t have anything else going on. “I have food on the way too. You can have some too, if you want.”

WELL, SHIT— if thea knew getting strangers to hand her a twenty was this easy, she would’ve done it ages ago. “ thanks, ” they nod to the girl, before handing the money straight to the cashier, who didn’t look very happy about the occurrence. thea was tempted to take the change and bolt, but it probably would’ve looked a little sketch, so they pick up their coffee and hand the change over to the girl behind her. “ i really appreciate it. i have a stupid test later today, and if i don’t get my coffee, i’m gonna be asleep before the second page. ”

In all honesty, Laurie couldn’t say she’d be pressed if the stranger did bail. She had other problems to stress about other than getting fifteen or so dollars back in change. But that wasn’t something either had to deal with, as the other did turn around. “Thanks, and no problem,” Laurie promised. But oh, once the test was brought up, that definitely got Laurie’s attention and she seemed to clearly be interested in that turn of conversation. “Oh? Where do you attend?” She asked in curiosity, though would understand if they didn’t wish to divulge into details when they didn’t even know Laurie.

ari looks up at the other as she hears her name, a smile graces their features as she sees one of her brightest students “it’s quite alright,” they chuckle slightly at her eagerness “ yes, it was a hassle, i swear i’m not the best with technology and that only made it worse. ” she shakes her head with a smile “ i did received it, you can breathe, besides you have weeks before it becomes a problem. even though, i know it will never will be a problem with you. ” they take a sip of her coffee before smile “how did you find about the paper ? difficult, easy, hopefully interesting ? ”

“Oh, I really enjoyed it. But it isn’t always only about the subjects in general,” she pointed out, giving her a genuine smile of appreciation. “I think it’s also because of the way you teach them. I’ve always found your lectures interesting.” Laurie was aware of who Ari was, and what she was too. The supernatural world existed and she had known that for a little while. However, she never pried further into it with her professor, not wanting to be disrespectful. If Laurie had been in their shoes instead, she probably wouldn’t want people hounding her about her centuries old life.

THE ONLY REASON HE’S BEING SO FORMAL IS BECAUSE HE’S FILMING, but laurie greeting him makes him immediately smile, before narrowing his eyes playfully to tell her that he means business. he’s not there for idle small talk. eli clears his throat, because he means business. “ did you see any crows drop from the sky that one day in october ? ” he asks her.

He was in professional mode, which made her smile again but Laurie just nodded in understanding, waiting for him to lay out the topic she already knew would be brought up. The crows. Whether it was actual news channels or podcast hosts, that subject was a field day. “Not initially. Some friends and I were hanging out, and we first heard something outside that sounded like things were falling,” Laurie explained. “We walked outside to check, as well as others from separate apartments. And an array of crows were scattered about.”

“Not boring,” Rhine interjected, suddenly trying to find her words through the lyrics garbled under crackling speakers. He was intrigued by someone who didn’t fall under the influence of this place so easily, something Rhine hadn’t been able to shy away from himself. He had heard so many people praise the etherealness of the club, how its colors felt like dream that swallowed you whole. As someone who raised in that ethereality in the fae realm, he was intrigued by how artificial it all felt. He was enthralled by the way they tried to mimic some aspects of nature and then all at once, exploit it by making it too much. The lights in the club could be blinding and burning, pulling more sweat from those who danced under it faster than their actual movements.

“The effort is admirable, though. Duly noted. Is your usual scene the opposite, like… the library or something?” He asked. With the time he spent going back and forth between portals and realms, he had never developed a firm grasp on the advancements of this one. He often found himself in the company of softer and quieter resources to explore what he lacked, especially when he was sober. Was it possible that he had seen her before in a different light?

Not boring. If there was one thing Laurie was expecting as a response, it was not that. Her lips parted slightly as the two simple words echoed in her brain, like she was caught off guard by such an injection. Surprised, but she figured she could appreciate it too, the fact that he wasn’t looping her into the boring category like most others would. To be fair, it was a club, it was meant to be an atmosphere of letting loose and having fun, but she was the one making the choice not to do that. She had for a time, back with her ex, but then she went back to uptight, school-driven Laurie.

When he asked if the library was more in her element, Laurie almost thought he was being condescending. But she wasn’t so sure. Maybe he was just genuinely wondering. “Actually, yes,” she replied with a laugh, though a humorless one more to herself. “That or just... anywhere on Columbia’s campus, I guess,” Laurie explained before gesturing to the area around them. “And you? Is this atmosphere more of your thing?”
