24 yr old fairy femme here asking for any coming out advice you may have, and any advice pertaining to fully accepting and reveling in my lesbian identity rather than feeling cycles of pride and joy and shame denial around it! I know thats kinda heavy so no sweat at all if not!!!! :)

i totally get feeling insecure in your identity! honestly i think silly little moments of insecurity are more common than people realize, so first of all i don’t want you to feel any shame about feeling this way. we (unfortunately) live in a world and political climate where queerness of any form can be heavily discriminated against and shamed, so there’s nothing wrong with you as a person for feeling the effects of that energy. however, this does not mean that you should feel ashamed of your identity. queerness is not wrong or unnatural.

in terms of fully accepting your identity, i don’t think there’s any one way to go about it. personally, i think finding other lesbians/queer people and building community with them is one of the best ways to do this. tumblr (for all its faults lol) is actually pretty great for this if you struggle to find community irl, but i would really recommend looking for lesbian/queer clubs, events, or meetups in your area! i've also found working to unlearn patriarchial standards and morals to be very helpful, especially because homophobia is rooted in patriarchial ideals. if it's within your means and you feel comfortable, i would also recommend looking into lgbtq+ affirming therapy.

as for coming out, i actually dont have much advice :( i always hated the idea that i had to have some weird confessional with the people close to me as though straight was the default and i was some sort of anomaly. i recognize this isnt how everyone feels and coming out can be very affirming! but i kind of just mentioned in passing that i was seeing a girl and my family mostly just went with it lol. i was a little worried because one side of my family is kind of religious, but i dont have much interest in actively hiding who i am. it helps that my family was mostly just waiting for me to confirm that i'm a lesbian since you can only go so many years without mentioning a boyfriend before people start making assumptions lmao.

lastly, there is no "right" way to be gay! you are the only person that has to live your life, so live it in a way that brings you the most joy!
