• You're bleeding through your shirt. Don't tell me you're fine. • How long have you been walking around like this? • I'm not going to hurt you. I just need to see how bad it is. • You should have told me the moment it happened. • Hold still. I mean it. Hold still. • This is going to sting. Bite down on something if you need to. • You've been hiding this for days, haven't you. • Who did this to you? I need you to tell me who did this. • Stop being brave for five minutes and let me help you. • I've seen worse. I've also seen men die from worse, so let me look at it. • I found the bandages in the trash. You want to explain that? • Don't you dare apologize for bleeding on me. • Your hands are cold. That's not a good sign. • I'm not angry. I'm terrified. There's a difference. • Come into the light. Let me see your face. • You should have stitches. I know you won't go. So sit down and let me do what I can. • You're white as a sheet and still trying to stand up straight. • I could hear you in the night. I didn't say anything. I'm saying something now. • Don't look at it if it makes it worse. Just look at me. • It's not weak to let someone see you hurt. • You came to me. Of all the places you could have gone, you came here. • Lay back. You're not getting up until the color comes back to your face. • I'm not going to ask what happened. Not yet. First let me fix what I can. • You've been holding your left side since you walked in. Think I didn't notice? • This is going to leave a mark. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. • I've patched up a lot of people in my time. None of them scared me like you do right now. • You could have died out there. You could have died and I would have been the last person to know. • Sleep. I'll be right here when you wake up. I'm not going anywhere. • You're allowed to make a sound. Nobody's watching. • I need you to stay awake for me. Just a little longer. Talk to me. • You're lucky the cut wasn't deeper. • Stop apologizing for needing help. Stop it right now. • I've seen what it looks like when someone's used to this. That's what scares me most about you. • Tell me your name. Tell me what day it is. Stay with me. • You're going to be alright. I promise you. • You went back out there after this? With this? • Nobody takes care of you, do they? That ends tonight. • I've been gentle with you. I need you to be honest with me in return. • You're safe now. You're here, you're safe, and I've got you. Just breathe.
Hornet is seated next to Loop laying down, uncertainly staring at the sky at the stars twinkling faintly, distantly above Bone Bottom.
"...no, not really. I've spent so much of my life living underground, so much of it with duty to fulfill, things to keep me busy, that I only saw stars rarely. I have given very little thought to what it is like out there. I've not had the space in my life for such wondering."
She looks sideways at her star companion. "I suppose you have?"
Unintentionally, they let out a quiet, disappointed sigh. They didn't know what else they expected; no one seemed to care about the stars. And if no one on the surface had any interest, then why should they hope someone who had spent most of her life underground would ever have it on her mind?
They averted their eyes. "Sometimes."
They didn't elaborate. They'd been burned one too many times - there was no point in talking about it to someone who held no interest.
Would someone who dealt with gods often believe the words they said more than their party would?

oh! a new reaction. moran noticed the way siffrin perked up when the wine was placed on the table. though the moment was gone, replaced with siffrin's usual hesitation. oh well, it had only been a few weeks, there was no sense in pressuring the star into opening up or rushing towards happiness in that new, unfamiliar body.
"you don' have to" salomé gently chimed in. "mor can take neri along and the two of us get the house ready - storm season is over now, there's quite a bit to do where certain small hands and hundreds of questions might be distracting."
she at least had the feeling that siffrin might need a break from ...somehow everything. but if they wanted to go and talk to the other star-touched she'd at least make sure neri stayed with her to leave moran and siffrin to their business. and neri would probably be happy with either option: staying home and helping mama or going with mom to see the 'twinkling people'
moran offered a glass to the other, giving them an apologetic smile "I didn't want to rush you, sal is right. it's your choice"
They shook their head. "No. No, I want to go. I want to meet them. And . . . they might have advice on the whole . . ." They gestured down at themself helplessly.
". . . Unless you need my help getting the house ready?" If they were needed, then they should probably stay.
They were getting used to the pain of their original name being said. Getting better at predicting it, at knowing when it was coming and not reacting to it. They didn't want their parents to find out about it. Not only would it worry them, but they wouldn't be able to explain why it was stardust's name in particular that hurt, either.
Siffrin stood up, brushed as much cat fur off of them as possible - a fruitless endeavor, but they could at least get it off their hands - and took the glass with a word of thanks. "Call me curious," they said. "I want to know what they're like."
They sat down at the table and took a sip from their glass. As much as they didn't like the taste of alcohol, the times they had it in the loops had gotten them more used to it. But they'd tried not to drink it too often - once every several loops, usually - and it'd been a while since they'd had any, so they still made a slight face when the taste first hit them.
It'd be worth it, though, to actually feel relaxed for the first time since they got here. Although . . . that would be a good question, wouldn't it?
They swirled the wine around their glass and asked, "So is this going to affect me differently at all with the whole 'new star-based body' thing?" Stars, they hoped it would actually take the edge off. If it didn't work then there was hardly a point in drinking it, outside of being social.
moran did see the tears but decided not to comment on it - it wasn't that much of a surprise, not with everything siffrin had been through. so instead she made sure that the star was comfortable in their new room, wishing them a goodnight with a soft voice.
weeks passed by, routine settled in. at some point neri didn't rush to siffrin's room anymore to check if they were still there but just trusted that the star would appear sooner or later. salomé and moran too, got more used to their new housemate.
it was during one evening when neri had already been safely tucked to bed and moran looked through her calendar that they frowned a little. "huh. about that time again..." she looked at siffrin while salomé placed some wine on the table - it felt like the kind of evening to have a glass and chat -. "I am due to visit the other star-touched soon... do you want to come along, siffrin?"
It was strange, living here like this. It shouldn't be strange, in their own house with their own family, but it was. No one knew who they were. They treated them like a stranger, and it hurt. And that was on top of their stardust's name - their actual name that they could not hear - piercing their head every time it was said.
And they kept forgetting, too. They hated forgetting. Every time their parents went off somewhere, they forgot about their entire existence. The amount of times they got startled by the "sudden" reappearance of either one of them in a single day . . . They'd taken to writing their names down and taping them to the inside of their canopy bed and hoping that helped.
There was also the cat. They'd completely forgotten about the cat until they woke up on the couch one day with it curled on their chest. They will never admit how emotional they got at that.
As for stardust . . . Well, they didn't really know how to think about them. Their feelings about him fluctuated depending on their mood. They didn't get why they were so attached to them. Sometimes they were annoyed about it, sometimes they thought it cute, and a lot of the time, his insistence on playing or reading or showing them things was the only thing that kept them from rotting in bed for the entire day.
They were so, so tired, and the loss of their allies was a hole that burned just as deeply in their chest as the star that they swallowed, but stardust somehow kept them moving.
Moran's words (and stars was it weird to call their parents by their names, but it'd be stranger if they avoided doing so, so they'd had to force themself to get used to it) distracted Siffrin from their current task of sitting on the floor to give the cat the proper amount of scritches and pets. They looked up, their whole body language perking up when they saw the wine getting placed on the table - stars they could really use that right now - and paused when they asked them about visiting the star-touched.
Their anger had simmered down, over the days. They'd had time to think more clearly since she'd mentioned that one of them could have caused the forgetting. They still didn't like it, didn't like it at all, but they could recognize now that it had probably been an accident, like the way that their wish to escape the loops resulting in being sent back in time had been an accident, the way that stardust's wish for a friend pulling another version of them back through time to him had been an accident. As well as the fact that it hadn't even happened yet. They could probably handle meeting them without making a scene out of it, now.
Besides. They were curious about the others that had gone through this, and wanted to know if they had any advice about the transition. They kept catching themself staring at their reflection . . .
". . . Sure."
