Like, 100%, if you tell someone you can’t make it, they’ll understand. It’s better to tell them and risk a small degree of disappointment on their part than to leave someone hanging and worried when you don’t show up.

Had someone agree to do another half of a project only for them to leave it to gather dust. And then when I brought it up and said, “Nevermind, I can see you don’t want to. I’ll finish it, myself,” they apologized before repeating the exact same behavior, even when I expressed that I didn’t want to be continually strung along. Tbh, it’s a lot easier to work around a known problem rather than expect someone to follow up with their word when they actually can’t do it, resulting in wasted time and broken trust.
