This official art straight up looks like a 90s boys love OVA (R18)???
Like how do you even begin to describe this??
"Ah yes, this is a a skateboarding anime where the villain has his secretary/sub/loyal dog wait on him while he gets out the shower, looking seductively into the mirror at him while water drips down his open robe."
Utsumi really placed this sexually charged image along with innocent tapestries like Matcha Blossom going fishing and Reki/Langa getting ice cream together 😂
Since November 1st is dog day in Japan, Animage did an article about dog boys in this month's issue! From SK8 they chose both Tadashi and Reki! Here is what they wrote about them.
The ones who are devoted
Reki, a high school student with a cheerful, energetic personality and a lot of friends, and Kikuchi, who is mostly expressionless and quietly follows Ainosuke around. What if these two were dogs......!? Reki, who is friendly and adored by the neighbors, and Kikuchi, who is quiet and doesn't wag his tail to anyone but his owner, would probably be completely opposite types of dogs. They may not have similar personalities and don't seem to have much in common, they do have one thing in common, they are both single-minded and straightforward when it comes to what they're interested in and what is important to them.
Reki is obsessed with skateboarding and he spends every day practicing, studying videos, and building his own board, so he doesn't waste any time in his passion for skateboarding. Kikuchi is also devoted to his master, Ainosuke, and is always willing to do anything for him, even taking the fall for him when he's in danger. When Reki said "Skating is super fun" while they were at the love hotel, it resonated with Kikuchi, perhaps because they're both people who hold things dear to them in their hearts.
The two of them are devoted like dogs, and are always straightforward in their feelings for what is important to them. I'm sure those emotions will shine through in the new animation project too!
He's good at taking care of others
Just like a dog who looks after children, Reki is quite good at taking care of others. He taught the novice Langa how to skateboard from the beginning, and brought him to his own part-time job when he was looking for one.
Playing around
The way he hugs people when he's happy or when he's joking around is like a dog playing around with its owner. He doesn't need much personal space, and once he's comfortable with someone he's not afraid to touch people.
Plays around with all his might
When dogs play, they play with all their might. In Reki's case, he skateboards with all his might and has so much fun, when he reaches the goal rolls on the ground and can't stop smiling!
Emotions
Even without his speaking, Reki's emotions are clear from the way his tail wags and his facial expressions, just like a dog, so he's easy to understand.
He puts his all into everything he does and has fun. Although she seems reckless, he tried to keep Langa away from the dangerous battle with ADAM, so he can be wary at times too
Stats circle: (from the top going clockwise) Honest, lots of friends, does everything with his full strength, wariness, fun
Reki: What kind of dog would he be?
Like a cheerful beagle who loves to play, Reki has a cheerfulness that energizes everyone around him and he has fun skateboarding with all his might. They're also the same in that they get completely engrossed in whatever interests them!
Kikuchi: What kind of dog would he be?
Kikuchi's loyalty in how he will obey Ainosuke no matter what, is like that of a Shiba Inu who is always loyal and devoted to its owner. The fact that they don't act nice to anyone except their owner is also similar, since Kikuchi doesn't show any emotion except when it comes to Ainosuke.
Kikuchi is completely a dog!
Director Utsumi Hiroko
-Please tell us the appeal of Reki and Kikuchi's dog-like traits.
Utsumi: appeal of their dog-like traits...... huh? I think Reki's surname 'Kyan' is a bit dog-like. (TN: Kyan is the sound of a dog barking in Japanese) And how he will just walk up to anyone with a skateboard in one hand to get close to them. Kikuchi, rather than dog-like, he's a dog. How he strictly respects his master, but sometimes bites at him. How he never leaves even when his leash is let go of.
-What are things you focused on when making them?
Utsumi: Since Reki's given name is a single character, we wanted to balance it out and so he ended up with a surname with three kanji characters. It was a surname I found when I was looking for an Okinawan name, and the way Kyan sounded was so cute that it was unanimously chosen. In the third episode, MIYA bets him to "become a dog", but since there's another dog character, I don't particularly think of him as being dog-like. Kikuchi is a dog. He's called a dog many times, and he's a trained dog who responds in a practiced way...... he's the real deal.
-If Reki and Kikuchi were each real dogs, what would they be?
Utsumi: Reki's a beagle! That's just my theory, but when I looked it up, I found they have a "mischievous and active personality, ...and a loud voice". His voice is loud!! It was Reki. Kikuchi, based on his master's image, made me think of a Doberman, but I don't picture him as having a muscular body or being aggressive, so he's a black Shiba Inu. The "Tadashi" in Kikuchi Tadashi means loyalty, so it fits perfectly☆.
-If Reki and Kikuchi turned into dogs, what would Langa and Ainosuke's reactions be and how do you think they would treat them?
Utsumi: Langa would probably stand still for a few seconds and then easily...... or rather without thinking, he'd just accept it. Even though he can't talk to him, for some reason they can have conversations. When he'd go to bed they'd probably sleep together. Like in a Western movie☆ Ainosuke would probably be a little disturbed. Even though he called him "dog dog" every day like that...... I think he'd have a hard time accepting it at first and avoid him, but then he'd probably take very good care of him instead of apologizing for that. And that'd go right along with him giving him food so rich it would upset his stomach.
-If Langa and Ainosuke(ADAM) were animals, what would they be?
Utsumi: Langa would be a Yeti. Since he has the image of snow and ice and he also has poor communication skills and an unworldly feeling, so I think of him as an animal that you've never seen before. Ainosuke(ADAM) is a leopard of the cat family. His splendid appearance! His ferociousness! He's not like a cheetah, since he's not just slender, but also has a sturdy body! A punch from him seems like it would be really powerful. But then when I think about a cat punch it sounds cute!!
-In the Animage November issue there was a Halloween picture of Ainosuke and Kikuchi. Kikuchi was wearing a collar and so I'm sure the fans were shocked and really happy about that, but was it your idea to put the collar on him, Director Utsumi? Or was it the illustrator who came up with it?
Utsumi: I know you're asking as if I've made a strange specification order, but that strange composition itself was ordered by Animage, so please don't be fooled everyone. It was such a buzz at the studio that the producer, Suzuki (Mari), came and asked me if we were really going to do this. After the "my dog~" scene in the series, I just carelessly thought "Well, they've acknowledged their master and dog relationship, so it's fine isn't it?!" I remember when the order was still in the rough stage, I saw Kikuchi was serving his master on his knees, so I thought while he's a werewolf, he's still a canine, so I added a collar. It was the first time a magazine company asked me for the rights to ADAM (Ainosuke) and Kikuchi, so I was really happy. This is the picture that was created since I wanted to respond to the request as well as possible. All the details were carefully drawn by the key frame artist☆ My opinion is that "it's too funny".
-Please give a message to all the fans who are waiting for the new animation project!
Utsumi: Just as I can hear you all saying "When will the new project be?!" I'm wondering the same thing. When will it be?! I would appreciate it if you could wait patiently. Even though it's been more than half a year since the show finished airing, it's still a show that's able to get such a funny copyright request and cause us so much trouble...... so I'm happy!! Even though there will be a new animation project, I'm sure they won't look anything like they did in that request, so BIG LOVE to Animage for giving us a very priceless and interesting rights request, and to everyone who was happy to receive it.
Collar
Kikuchi's leash is always in Ainosuke's hand, and there's an invisible collar securely attached around his neck. But of course, that makes Kikuchi happy.
Loyal
When Rep. Takano's corruption came to light, Ainosuke ordered Kikuchi to "take the fall" if he were to be accused of perjury in the future. Kikuchi's lack of a reaction and just acceptance of it showed his loyalty was just as strong as a dog's.
Always together
Just as if he were taking a walk with his owner, whenever Ainosuke goes out Kikuchi is almost always following him around. For that reason he's obviously able to drive a car, but he's also even able to fly a helicopter.
Happy when given commands
When Ainosuke gave him the command, "You'll be my dog for the rest of our lives," Kikuchi responded happily. While it's obvious what his owner says is absolute, Kikuchi seemed to find joy and fulfillment in that.
He doesn't just wag his tail at anybody, he's devoted to one person. While he is a capable secretary, he can also be stubborn, like thinking that skateboarding is dangerous......
Stats circle: (from the top going clockwise) loyalty, talent, friendliness, loneliness, stubbornness
hey! i'm sorry if this is too personal, but i'm looking into a diagnosis for OCD and i'm... kind of terrified. both for the process of getting a diagnosis (especially as a minor) and what comes after - the therapy and medication and you know, living my life with it. do you have any advice for it?
OCD is the scariest thing I’ve ever faced in my life. Scarier than my depression, than my dad’s death, than being homeless, than getting surgeries done, all of it.
Unlike those other things, OCD was with me everywhere I went. Time didn’t make it better, and I no one could comfort me.
The thing is, that’s all from when I was undiagnosed and untreated. OCD is a disorder rooted at its very core in fear and uncertainty. So going it alone? It’s terrifying, heart-wrenching.
But the wild thing is, you can recover. I think most people don’t realize that, because OCD is such a beast that once it’s ruled your life for so long, it’s nigh impossible to imagine any other version of living.
You need a good therapist who knows what they’re doing. I first started suffering from OCD symptoms when I was 14. I’m 26 now, and I only just started seeing a specialist this year.
I’m not saying that to discourage you. I’m saying don’t give up, no matter how long the trek. OCD has been the ugliest part of my life, but now I’m starting to conquer it. I’ve seen people I love recover, and that’s what pushed me.
Check out IOCDF.org (International OCD Foundation).
On their site they have guidelines to help you find an OCD therapist.
Among the questions I asked my potential therapists is whether they use ERP and whether they think medication is a possible treatment based on the individual patient (the answer to both should be yes).
ERP, or exposure response therapy, is the Only successful treatment for OCD. It’s a type of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) that not many counselors are trained to use. (Now is a good time to find a counselor, because many are doing long-distance work on the phone because of covid!)
Because OCD is a disorder rooted in uncertainty, OCD patients get trapped into “reassurance loops,” also called “checking.”
We have a fear, we either continually tell ourselves it will be okay, or we ask for outside reassurance from family & friends. They tell us it will be okay too. Maybe we relax for a day, an hour, ten minutes. OCD is like the monster from Hercules; it just keeps growing new heads. The fear will transform, or you’ll start obsessing over something completely new.
So reassurance isn’t the answer. What is? Acceptance. Facing your intrusive thoughts head on. An OCD counselor will challenge you, one baby step at a time, to say to your intrusive thoughts “okay. Maybe that IS true. Maybe that bad thing IS going to happen. Maybe that bad thing about me IS real. Maybe I’m terrible. Maybe the world is ending,” etc. etc. Then you’ll experience your body’s panic response. Until your body gets tired of panicking and lets it go.
Over time, you’ll retrain your brain and body on how they respond to intrusive thoughts, until eventually, you don’t panic. Eventually, you can just start to let them go.
OCD is a disorder where the only way out is through.
I know it sounds terrifying, but trust me. Nothing can be scarier than living alone in your head with this disorder. You’re already DOING the scariest thing I can possibly imagine! I know you’re strong, and I know you’re brave, and I know you have what it takes to get better, because you’ve already been living your daily life facing a challenge greater than many people will ever face.
So for now? I’m not telling you not to be scared. Of course you’re scared. That’s the whole OCD deal. I’m just telling you to move forward trying to believe that you can get through this, even if it doesn’t all work out right away. Keep going. I’ve seen the light at the end of this tunnel, after years of feeling my way in the dark. You’ll get here too.
Go to IOCDF.org and check out the options for finding treatment and learning more about how OCD works (you can try out their OCD counselor map, but if there aren’t any options there for you, don’t worry. I found my therapist on google lol).

Reprinting and Recreating are NOT Allowed
Sometimes, an emo bird needs a little help with admitting his feelings.
Dark Shadow is a part of Tokoyami’s body, so he’s always there. Plus, he has a mind of his own. So I always figured he was privy to things Tokoyami wouldn’t admit to.
Note: “Fumi” is just Fumikage (Tokoyami’s first name) shortened. I kinda HC it as Dark Shadow’s affectionate nickname for him.
