MAD
TAEK WOON
I stood dumbfounded in front of the door step.
There was a bouquet of flowers sitting on the cold ground. I took a good look at it.
Camellia? I guess... I was never good with flowers, nor with figuring things out. Where did the flowers come from? With an eyebrow raised, I bent to get the cluster. Just then, the door opened, my wife's head popped out, with a warm smile on her face. "I knew you'd be here - " Her sentence was cut off. She noticed the bouquet. "...Wow." She gasped, which was later followed by a genuine smile. "I never expected these! What's the occasion?" Filled with excitement, she took the flowers from my hands and gazed at them. "Thank you very much!" She jumped in joy; her lips then met my cheek.
I myself never expected flowers to greet me as I come home. All I could do was nod.
The flowers kept on coming. Primrose. Tulips. Gardenias.
My wife might have been delighted with these "gifts", but I wasn't. Every day, they kept on coming. The next thing I knew, there were chocolates. "My sweet tooth's gonna get pulled if this keeps up!" She playfully nudged me as she nibbled on a bar of Hershey's. "...Don't." I blurted out of nowhere. "Hmm?" She looked at me with confused eyes.
I sighed, "Are you meeting with someone lately?" I ended up asking.
"No, why?"
"...Nothing." I said as I took the chocolate bar from her. "There might be poison here."
She kept on receiving anonymous gifts. It got me really worried. She probably thought that I might've brought them. I told her the truth. "Then who?" My wife asked me with fretful eyes. "I don't know either..." I sighed. I felt a heavy weight being placed upon my shoulder. I saw my wife bit her bottom lip - She was scared. My heart sank. I might've been carefree all this time. I thought that it wasn't that important of a deal... But as soon as I saw her petrified face, I died a little inside. I took her hand and rubbed my thumb across her palm to comfort her, even just a bit. "It's going to end soon, I promise." I gave her my word, and she gave me a crooked smile.
I might've said that, but it got worse.
Today, there was this weird bag placed on the stairs. It was filthy. The stench was too much. I tried opening it, and I can't even talk about it... I threw it away before she could see it. The next day came; there were withering flowers on an antique vase. "Jonquils..." She whispered in dismay.
"...Desire for affection returned."
Today, too, there were gifts. I couldn't even call them "gifts". They were horrifying... Sickening! "Gyaaah!!!" I ran outside the house - My wife was there, her whole body was shaking. I grabbed her shoulders and moved her out of the way. I looked down - A dead cat. A note was attached to it. "Cocoa" - It said.
My wife had a cat named "Cocoa" once...
It didn't stop.
We reported it to the police.
One Wednesday night, we drove back home from dinner. I closed the car's door, pocketed my car keys, and headed straight for the door. But then, my feet came to a halt, and my eyes widened in terror. She closed the door and approached me. I was rooted on my spot.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
She took a peek from behind, and I felt her stiffen. A shriek followed after.
We were both looking at a bloody head.
STARLIGHT
HAK YEON
I have always adored stars my whole life.
My mom had read me tons of books about stars everyday since young. She said that by the time I’ve seen a shooting star in the night sky, I need to wish upon it. Eventually, it will come true. But not for me, for I have never seen a star in my lifetime.
As a kid, I would always go to my secret and precious spot - Enchanted Hill, which was a few miles away from our house and a fifty minute drive from the town. There, I would spend my time running endlessly, barefooted. As the first grass of spring would tickle my toes, I would look up and search for a star.
However, until now, I haven’t found anything.
Not a single star.
Today I climbed the hill again. I caught something striking by the corner of my eye. It was glowing, and shiny… I ran towards it, and I ended up finding a sparkling girl. She wore a sheer dress, with big eyes and rosy cheeks. The ends of her hair had a natural curl in it. I gulped, for no one had ever been to my hiding spot besides me. To all honesty, I’ve never seen this girl - Not in town, not anywhere.
Gathering my courage, I tapped her shoulder. She jumped a little and turned her head around. “…Yes?” She spoke in monotone. Might as well add in that she really was twinkling. I kept silent for a while as she fluttered her eyelashes. “W-Who…” I stuttered and pointed at her.
"Where’d you come from?" I changed the question.
"Me? I came from there…" She pointed at the abyss-like sky.
"You mean the night sky?"
"Yes."
I tilted my head. Mother, it seems like I’ve found my star.
PROMPT 55. Write about a world where they can’t see any stars.
ASTRAY
SANG HYUK
It was a Tuesday.
She was a four minutes late when she entered the classroom. Everyone stared at her, mumbling amongst themselves. She sat down her seat which was beside mine, her head hung low. I smiled at her; she smiled back. It was the sweetest smile I've seen in my life.
...The sweetest smile I've ever seen from her.
By the afternoon, she took her pills again. It was an obvious lot today. I neared her and asked if she was okay. "Are you having enough sleep?" I asked as I stared at the dark circles under her ruined eyes. She nodded lightly, the smile didn't fade. By dismissal, she ran towards me, crying. "I'm just so tired..." She said. There were many things that I wanted to tell her the next day.
But what I saw was a note:
"I'm sorry, Hyuk... Happy Birthday."
...She died that Wednesday.
SATURDAY
HONG BIN.
Together, we went out to talk a little stroll. You wore your favorite streaming blue dress, with your flat shoes put on messily. While, just like everyday, I wore those blue jeans that exposed my knees, along with my white sneakers with crumbled heels. We looked at each other and laugh at all those things that resembled us.
The sweet scent of soap filled the room which made me close my eyes and smile without knowing. It feels just like I’m dreaming. The sound of guitar woke up my half-lidded eyes; so did the song you were humming to me… You noticed and smiled back at me. I leaned my back at the window, and, in the drowsy sunlight, I drank the soy latte that you gave to me. I approached you, who was enveloped in my warm embrace.
Today is a perfect day to just drift off to sleep.

Humans are such liars.
I glanced at the clock, leaning on the bar with my cellphone in front of me - 11:00 pm. I've sent her dozens of messages, and she hadn't replied to a single one. I tried to call her, but she kept on hanging. It's been hours since she left without me knowing. I bet she's at the club again, that girl... She never learns.
"You don't have the right to tell me what to do!"
"Is it wrong to go out and have fun?"
"Geez, you keep telling me to not go there! You think I'm flirting with other guys!?"
I scratched my head in frustration. For the umpeeth time, I tried calling her. What a miracle! She answered. "Could you just stop it!?" My mind went blank and the call ended. Then, the ring came...
I always told myself that this relationship was a lie.
HAPPINESS
JAE HWAN.
Today, I gave her a wide, cheeky smile. One that reached the corners of my ears. Her eyes lit up, sparkling brightly like the stars at night. She returned a smile. "Hey..." I waved at her and she did the same. We met up at the same time and location again today. At the park at four in the afternoon. It was a pity. We couldn't see each other everyday, since we came from different schools.
The conversation went on longer than usual, so did other people's stares. We were receiving a lot of attention. Because of that, it was silent for a while. "You'll be fine." I said, making hand gestures. She's the only one who understood...
That day, she told me that I was her happiness.
And when the time comes, I'll sing a song for her. One that she would hear. Because it would make her happy.
SMILE
TAEK WOON.
She looked at me with a pout on her face.
"Oppa... Are you mad?" She leaned forward, trying to get a glimpse of my current expression. I just blankly stared at her, and by the time I did, she got the message. "I'm sorry... I know you hate it." We communicated like this, everyday. Even though people would always say that we are complete opposites or we won't ever get along, she still insisted and kept on clinging unto me like Hak Yeon would always do. They're persistent kids, but it makes me happy.
"I promise I'll never do that again!" She frowned cutely. "...Atleast smile for me!" I glanced at her with an expressionless look plastered on my face. After a while, I thought - "How would she react if I leave?"
My mind has decided. I left her there, who was throwing a fit.
Behind her back, I chuckled.

HAK YEON.
The streets are busy as usual.
It was the same everyday. This city is lifeless, and cold, like November air. The whole town is in monochrome. It's always on the run... I tucked my hands in the pockets of my trench coat and walked aimlessly along the sidelines. My fortune cookie told me to meet someone new today. Hah. I sneered. What a joke.
There's something missing with everyone in this town - A name. In this society, identity is meaningless.
Socializing was meaningless.
I sighed to myself and paused for a while. At the corner of my eye, I saw this girl. She had silky hair and porcelain skin. Beautiful. Frankly, she was the only one that had color in this world. I tried chasing her... To ask for a name.
How unfortunate. She will forever just be a memory.
I know. In this world, there are many sorrowful things.
