Canon ships are great, random pairings are super, but nothing can ever match the high of the writers trying to gaslight you into thinking a pairing isn't romantic.

Nothing beats the feeling of them dangling the pair's 75th prolonged eye contact in front of you like a carrot on a stick just to pull it back and say, "See how they're perfect for each other in every way? Well, they're actually NOT together! In fact, you may even call them siblings."

And then you're banging your hands against the table like a toddler having a tantrum and yelling, "But they ARE! They ARE together!" And then they drag you away kicking and screaming.

ATLA + Star Wars parallels

We know Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker is the voice of Ozai. ATLA’s creators also took some inspiration from Star Wars for certain designs, characterization and narrative in Book 2 Earth. Here are some direct parallels:

#1: Sandbenders 

1) The sandbenders look very similar to the Tusken Raiders (aka sand people) from Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. Both wear ragged brown clothes and neck scarves and wrap bandages around their hands and feet. Some sandbenders also wear head bandages and/or eye protection goggles like the Tusken Raiders. Sandbenders show some skin but Tusken Raiders never do.  

2) The desert buildings and the Misty Palms Oasis resemble Star Wars scenery and the Mos Eisley cantina. In The Library:“That whole scene is ripe with Star Wars references. From the ‘lantern’ above the door looking like a Death Star to the whole Cantina set-up.” (via A:TLA annotations blog post 16 Jul 2012)

3) In The Library, Professor Zei shoos the sandbenders away from Appa. This scene resembles the treatment of the Jawas [also Star Wars] (via TV Tropes). 

4) Both the sandbenders and Tusken Raiders are desert nomads and share similar characteristics and plots. “Since economic opportunities are limited in the desert, Sandbenders get by however they can. They’ve been known to…even steal from passing travelers at the nearby cantina.” (via ALTA-Lore). Tusken Raiders also carry out thieving raids against outsiders. The Jawas also capture R2-D2 and C-3PO and sell them like the sandbenders capture Appa to sell.
