In the 1990s, when I was a child (yes yes I'm old, moving on), my mother had a rule:

I explained the “x before gta6” meme to my immigrant father and he, in turn, explained to me how back in his day in Romania, they had the same type of joke, except instead of it being gta6, it was about the imminent death of a singer named Gică Petrescu, who everyone was continuously shocked by because he refused to die. Every time a momentous event happened people would say, in essence: “This happened and Gică Petrescu hasn’t even died yet?!?”

So. He understood the gta6 meme immediately because they apparently had the same thing in Romania when he was young, except way, way more morbid

Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.

If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

The discourse around Nolan's The Odyssey reminds me of The Last Jedi mess. People who liked the movie are jumping to defend it because they enjoyed it from the simple movie-making standpoint, and because they want to condemn the racists, mysogynists, transphobes, and other scum of the earth who, per usual, latch onto the casting to spew their hateful ignorant bullshit.

Both of these defenses act like an automatic shield from legitimate criticisms from people who have valid reasons and argumentation for these criticisms. It becomes a defense of Nolan's artistic choices because he (supposedly, I haven't seen the film myself yet) executed his vision well and isn't that all that matters? He has "good" messages and he expressed them in a coherent artistically compelling (not to me, but apparently to many) way, so isn't it enough? Just like Rian Johnson had his idea for how to use the Star Wars setting to convey the messages he wanted to convey, not caring about character assassination or going against the pre-existing themes and ideas built into the very dna of the thing. And because they were "good messages" that aligned with the liberal left side of western consumerism, and triggered the anti woke scum, anyone who had a problem with what RJ did to the source material was told "you just didn't understand his vision". As if it's so hard to understand, it's not even a little subtle, another thing shared with Nolan's brand of storytelling.

(To be perfectly clear, I'm not comparing The Odyssey, the classics, and Greek Mythology to freaking Star Wars in terms of cultural significance, as opposed to Nolan I do not believe that Homer was "George Lucas of his time" (still can't believe he actually said that) and wouldn't dream of equating actual mythology to a fantasy setting. This post is about the way audiences react to adaptations with strong auteur vision that tends to ignore what the author is adapting in service of that vision, and about noting parallels in these two examples).

Anyway, people understand plenty, and oftentimes the more you understand, the more grounded your criticisms are. Not all of them, of course there are many emotional knee-jerk negative reactions, but these are also a valid response that is telling in its own right. I think it's worthwhile to ask why these reactions exist. Just as I think it's worthwhile to ask why people who liked the movie for whatever reason feel the need to dismiss constructive criticism from the concerned audience instead of feeling curious to research the points of those criticisms. I'm not faulting anyone for enjoying whatever they enjoy, but boy am I too old for "you just didn't get the message, or if you did, you are wrong for not liking it because it was a Good (tm) message"

like yeah i have encountered people online who think their ocs who exist in a contextless bubble deserve the same reverence as fully realized characters, and that mentality is annoying, but i don't actually think the end goal of all art is to became a webcomic, i think it's a perfectly fine if people want to flex their creative muscle by creating funky character designs with wacky backstories just for the joy of creation itself, like you don't have to be personally invested in it, but it's a bizarre way to moralize art especially coming from a group of people who otherwise seem to be against that?
