Day 30: A Character Who Deserved Better → Rick Stone (+Richie Foley/Gear)

There are so many characters I could have used for this, including characters I’ve already touched upon this month. But I think Rick/Richie was one that could have gone so so much further than he did. Being such a progressive, unapologetic comic, it made such a groundbreaking show, but Richie’s sexuality was one of the things never addressed. There were episodes about ADHD, school shootings, gun and gang violence, racism, and all sorts of lessons other shows were too afraid to take on. Rick was such a well written character in the comic, and he was endearing in the show. I wish they made the leap and let Richie be openly gay, too. And hey! DC! Bring him back in the comics!

Static Shock DCAU

Possibly the most well know iteration of the character among younger folks, this is the Static from the Static Shock cartoon series that released in 2000.This great cartoon show was apart of the larger DC Animated Universe and served as the introduction to Static for a whole new generation of fans. It’s because of this show’s popularity (and its dope theme song) there’s a common misconception that the character’s name is Static Shock but that just serves as the show’s title. In the show he is actually only ever referred to as Static.

So it’s taken me around what..a year? To be able to draw SOMETHING. And it was Static :)  I get really impatient and just color the sketch before I’m even done sketching. But yeah. I probably won’t end up finishing it and it’s probably going to be the last thing I’ll be able to draw until another year. But, I drew it. And that’s what counts.
