ââ  wiccanwyâ !!
billy continues his side of the â i didnât burn the toast, i just like it that way â argument which really isnât true on his end on his way through the hall, his dad grumbling over how he didnât raise him to cook CHARCOAL from a room away. itâs any other weekday, and no oneâs trying to invade or destroy the world this afternoon. but it takes billy moments, front door sliding open and the neutral expression off his face, for all of his to come down.
he doesnât even say â hi â first, he needs a second for his eyes to work, literally seeing ghosts on his doorstep and making sure no part of her is transparent or ethereal. he didnât open his third-eye by accident again, so this is definitely cassie. this is definitely cassie. this definitely CANNOT be cassie. â cassâŠ? â who cares if itâs not, who cares if he pulled another PARASITIC MONSTER into the universe, CASSIEâS caught up in a hug that starts out hesitant, lingers in his first step just in case, and then sheâs bundled in his arms and clingy hands and sheâs taller than he remembers, or maybe heâs gotten taller, or maybe heâs overthinking it, but maybe notâââââââ when she doesnât disappear into thin air in his grasp, he feels the confused and stinging pin-pricks of tears in the corners of his eyes, fascinated by the hair and shirt fabric heâs got in his face, like sheâs the new wonder of the world heâll never see again. because she might be. he really hopes she might NOT be.
the strange thing about dying ,  aside from literally everything ,  is the time difference   âââ   itâs been years for everyone she knows ,  but in cassieâs eyes ,  sheâd died about a month ago  &  woken up right after ,  feeling like sheâd just taken the worst nap of her life.  time passed by without her.  the thought has taken some getting used to.  billy looks different ,  older ,  but she supposes he is   âââ   &  anyways ,  she doesnât have much time to appreciate that before sheâs being hugged like she might vanish again at any moment.  she knows ,  in billyâs eyes ,  she might.  ( sheâs ghost - like ,  to everyone around her ,  despite her once - again - beating heart. ) Â
thereâs a specific kind of hug you get when youâve returned from the dead ,  equal parts thankful and fearful.  itâs that kind of hug.  sheâs gotten used to that ,  too.
cassie hugs him back just as tightly ,  smiling against his shoulder.     â  hey ,  billy.  surprise ?  â    even if it has been a much shorter time for her ,  sheâs missed him.  some part of her ,  those years she was dead ,  missed her friends desperately.     â  sorry.  for dying ,  and all.  wonât happen again ,  i promise.  â
