hii, first of all i love your work. sometimes i just play some of your terror edits on repeat and marvel at them :)
now, you probably get this question a lot and i'm sorry if i missed it if you've answered it before, but what do you use to edit?
i wanna get a head start on filmschool by at least teaching myself the basics of editing, but i'm really discouraged by how expensive and/or ai-heavy a lot of the recommended tools are.
thanks in advance if you choose to answer, i hope you have a lovely day
hello sorry for the late reply!! in case you ever see this, congratulations on acceptance to film school!!!! that's crazy cool!!! you must be so excited!!!!!!!
and to answer ur question, i use the adobe suite to edit (after effects and premiere pro). your school may provide licenses for u if u sign in with ur school email (if thats set up yet) & there are so many good tutorials on youtube!!!
but in ur case, i honestly think davinci resolve might be better. they offer a free version with all of the main tools & their coloring system is more widely used in the industry for higher budget media. plus they dont shove ai in your face as much as adobe i think!!
a love letter to this edit / a submission to @terrorheritageposts
not only is this video IMPECCABLY edited by the glorious @staud , but it is so extremely tumblr and so extremely essential to this fandom.
picture me in 2024, having just watched a show about a bunch of cold dead guys and thinking, hmmm i wonder what people have to say about this show on tumblr? and being met with this lovely lovely creation right at the top of the terror tag. core fandom memory.
now picture me in 2026, at the gay club on tumblr night (incredible concept) and i hear the opening notes to flourescent adolescent by arctic monkeys, immediately thinking of lovely james fitzjames who used to get it in your fishnets now you only get it in your night dress, etc, and freaking out because of course, on tumblr night of all nights.
finally picture me, 2 hours later, scouring tumblr for this edit, trying to find it because shouldn't it be one of the top posts? why isnt it one of the top posts? oh because that was two years ago. damn. and so desperate that im begging @knowing-my-fate to find it because i am simply too inebriated to try any harder. and of course, she pulls through, and i have the privilege of showing this masterwork of fandom video production to anyone with eyes.
thus, if it is not already, this edit MUST be on terror heritage posts. it simply must. thank you.
logging on to see one of my fav terror blogs commenting so poetically on my edit just added so much color to my day. thank u tumblr user phil trash number unus.
To celebrate editors in the fandom, the HBO War Video Archive is doing a spotlight series to learn a little bit about the people who make all of our favorite videos!
Today's spotlight (#23) is on @staud! She has been making videos for HBO War as well as The Terror, Interview with the Vampire, The White Lotus, and ZB1 since 2013. My favorite video of hers is "Fourth of July." It's just so succinct and well-done: a summary of Eugene's entire arc over the course of The Pacific in under 30 seconds. The visual parallel bookend shots, the quote choices (both show dialogue and the text quotes), the reversed shots, etc. are all perfectly chosen for maximum effect.
Check out her answers to 10 editing questions below, and find more of her videos right here on the HBO War Video Archive. Tell us in the tags or replies what your favorite @staud video is!
(Do you want to be part of this series, or do you have an editor you want to hear from? Let me know @hbowarvids!)
🎥 What made you want to start making fan videos?
i think I was just a very online, indoor kid who loved TV shows...so it was just a natural thing to end up doing. I started in 2013 with fan edits for this fandom in fact! If you want to cringe together with me, I still have a link to the first fanvid I made, haha.
💻 What program do you use?
Adobe After Effects
💭 Where do you find inspiration for videos?
Music videos!! A$AP Rocky, Doja Cat, and NewJeans have some of my favorites. Oh and also Pinterest and Eyecannndy.com are great resources for inspo!
⌨️ Tell us a little bit about your process!
1. Listen to music and imagine my favorite characters playing like a music video in my head.
2. Try to label the vibe I'm picturing: is it like a nostalgic feeling or spooky or romantic?
3. Open After Effects, drop in any shots that would fit that vibe.
4. Adjust colors and effects.
5. Then cut and edit the shots to the music (I think some people like doing this part before coloring/effects, but it inspires me more when the look and feel is already established while editing. Idk if that makes sense haha.)
6. Export -> play video back to test colors & sharpness -> troubleshoot -> export until happy.
🗒️ What's your favorite part of editing?
My absolute favorite part is honestly just selecting a clip and pressing sharpen/brighten a bunch of times. My vision's kind of wonky so it's nice to be able to SEE my favorite TV shows this way lol.
🎬 What video(s) are you proudest of (HBO War or otherwise)?
For HbBO War, I'm really happy with the colors of my "Endlessly" Buck/Bucky video!
🪫 Do you have a video that got away? A great idea you never made? (Now's the time!)
Ahh so many unfulfilled ideas and requests (so sorry anon..). One that haunts me is a video with all 4 HBO War shows together to "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers. Maybe one day if the inspo hits! :'D
🖱️ What's something new you'd like to learn/try?
I want to learn DaVinci Resolve Studio! Apparently all the industry-grade color people use that!
👨💻 Do you have any advice for other editors or someone who wants to try editing?
Instead of learning an editing program by taking step-by-step classes, learn via specific tutorials! For example: let's say you want to emulate a film style look. Search on YouTube, "film style After Effects tutorial (or Premiere/Final Cut/whatever program you use)" and follow that! i feel like that helped me more than taking a masterclass.
🎞️ Give a shout out to some of your favorite HBO War videos!
It's been a while since ive seen any HBO War fanvids (I've been in The Terror land for so long) so I'm definitely going to spend some time on this lovely hbowarvids archvie to catch up! Thank you admins for running this blog. <3
But I remember @evidenceof and @sunnygreys are especially such talented, unique, and fun editors!
Thank you so much to @staud for being part of this spotlight series—go check out her videos and let her know your favorites! And thank you to everyone who continues to make and support amazing videos in this fandom. We'll have another editor spotlight on Sunday!
I feel like Croziers biggest failing as a captain stem from the actively hostile relationship he has with his lieutenants because of his inability to give them any semblance of control. While he is their superior they are superior to him in a societal sense (heritage, education) and could probably work to rise above his position upon their return, which he ultimately resents them for. Giving them information would mean giving up part of the control he has over them and making them more equal to him - which he can't do for fear of them overtaking him. He's much more comfortable confiding in lower class characters like Jopson or Blanky but is unable to do the same for his lieutenants who'd actually need it to work as they are supposed to - as extensions of him and his will, but as he is trying to leave them behind they make mistakes which he will then also resent them for. He loves his men yes - he doesn't consider the lieutenants his men tho
