Project Game at GenCon 2014 -
Project Game is the name of the board game design collective under which some of my close friends and I have been designing games for a few years. Project Game basically exists as the space where we playtest and refine the games that our members are working on individually. Lately, there have been some big moves made by Adam and Alex and some of their work had a place at the proverbial table at GenCon this year.
Gold West - Two of our guys have brought this to life with design by J. Alex Kevern and art by Adam P. McIver. We’ve spent a lot of time playtesting and perfecting this beautiful and strategic Euro game and it is pretty amazing to see it get so close fruition. Tasty Minstrel Games signed it this year, with a release planned for winter 2014-2015. This game was front and center in the TMG room right across from the main exhibitor hall, so lots of people got to see it and try it out. Alex did a lot of demos and got a lot of positive responses/feedback. They also did a spot for the game with Board Game Geek. This game is going to catch the attention to many when it comes out.
Coin Age - In case you missed it, Adam P. McIver’s area-control microgame Coin Age was all the rage this year with a huge kickstarter, being released by Tasty Minstrel Games, and topping it off by winning the 2013 BoardGameGeek Golden Geek Award for “Best Print and Play Game”. The copies made it through production just in time to sell at GenCon and backers got theirs in the mail the same week. It’s way too much fun for being the size of a credit card and using only pocket change.
#VECTOR is Adam’s latest and greatest game that is small in size but large in strategy and fun. Players move pieces around to reach objectives on a map they are both constructing, however the ability to flip or move parts of the map make reaching your goal easier said than done. Having done all the legwork for this one himself so far, he was handing out homemade copies at GenCon 2014 and had a few conversations that might lead to bigger things for this game. No matter what happens, it’s a great game that is ready for anyone to play right now.
Amber Way is a newly developed game by Alex that uses area control, set collection, and a clever margin scoring system. Even though it’s basically a first draft right now, it still plays very smoothly. It will be really fun to watch this one as it develops!
These guys are constantly coming up with new games. They have many more good ones at varying stages of the design process right now, but these are the four that had the biggest impact on me at GenCon. My friend Pocket and I have been working on some ideas too, but with much less urgency than Adam and Alex. The best way to keep up with this progress is on Twitter:
