A brilliant explanation of consent for anyone who STILL doesn’t get it.
It makes me sick to my stomach that we have to explain this so thoroughly.
Even sicker that you don’t have to use a grand amount for the metaphor, not $1000, not even $20. Men can understand the store of value of $5 more than they can understand the concept of women as humans.
I think what’s saddest about the whole thing is that it always has to be a metaphor about an object for them to get it. Like the classic comparison to someone getting robbed because they were dressed rich so they were asking for it.
The only understand when women are compared to objects because that’s what they see is as.
It makes me sad because I had an experience where I was too drunk to give consent. I was labelled a slut after, and he tells his friends his version of what happened and they just accepted it. I had liked his friend and his friend was who I lost my virginity to, and I think in turn, he encouraged his friend to go after me. He was mad at me for not talking him after we’d spent a night together, baring in mind he had a new girlfriend that he told me about after and he was a complete ass to me. And the worst part is his friend was completely sober that night, and he told my friend he was going to look after me, and then went on to tell me that he’s better than me because he’s only slept with girls he was in a relationship with, though his number was still higher than mine which at that point it was at 1. He also didn’t use a condom, and I’ve never looked at myself the same since.
From Emily Trunko’s book.
He makes me more confident in being me. Whether it makes me wrong, weak, or sad it doesn't matter. Because it's true.
