Anne with Hazel Nuts - a film summary

Following our discussion about Kate Crackernuts adaptations, I want to talk in detail about the Czech TV film based on it, which is called “Anička s lískovými oříšky” (literally “Anne with Hazel Nuts”). You can watch it here on YT.

Because no subtitles (English or other) are available at the moment and I honestly don’t know if/when I’ll get to doing them (I am working on subtitles for Czech 1969 Cinderella at the moment which is taking longer than I expected…), let me just really quickly sum up this adaptation, so you can follow at least a little bit what’s going on.

lesser-known fairytales: the princess who understood magic

once upon a time, there lived a princess who studied magic. she works hard on creating a huge magic bird- with long, red legs of an ostrich and the neck of a swan. before she can finish the head, a giant attacked. he demands the princess marry him, but the princess refuses. her magic bird attempts to protect her, and runs out to attack. the princess loved her headless bird, so she follows after him. the giant attacks, but she escapes. 

she finds her way to the cottage of seven witches, who agree to house her in exchange for jewels. they show her their new find- the princess’s beloved magic bird! they tell her they planned to eat it for dinner. the princess offers to make them a soup instead, and with her magic causes the witches to fall fast asleep. the princess and her headless bird escape, but the giant is right behind them.

the princess and her bird come across a beautiful and strange kingdom. the houses are curious and intricately carved, with strange and lovely animals seeming to leap from the wood. the princess is told that this is due to the kingdom’s prince, an accomplished carver. the princess requests and audience with the prince to ask for safety. the prince marvels over her magic bird; the princess marvels over his intricate carvings. the prince invites her to stay and suggests they work together to create new things. the princess inspects some more of his carvings and decides she likes this rough-handed prince far better than any other man she’s ever met, and agrees.

when the giant attacks, the prince fits the bird with the head of a carved dragon, and the princess uses her magic to make it come alive. the prince and princess married and live happily ever after together, with the magic bird living as both a beloved pet and part of the kingdom’s defenses. // 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8
