Week 9 Reflection

The multimodal text I have chosen is the ‘Nature Now’ video by Greta Thunberg (https://www.conservation.org/video/nature-now-video-with-greta-thunberg). This is a fantastic video for students in the upper years to watch on the topic of persuasive writing. The video looks many persuasive elements. Like the use of language, use of evidence/facts, using an expert source. These are all persuasive techniques which can be taught. The video is on a relevant topic with a relevant figure in the media, so students can relate to it much more than other sources.

Week 7 Reflection

The goals I set for myself at the beginning of this trimester was to explore myself much more as learner, and explore the similarities I may have with students in the classroom in regard to learning literacy. After significant self-reflection and deep thought, learning for me is much more of a visual experience over most other aspects of learning. I thrive when there is flow charts, pictures, graphs etc. involved in the learning process. 

One resource which goes into detail about visual learners is from this website (https://www.sproutlabs.com.au/blog/learning-activities-for-visual-learners/) which explores the multitude of activities and ways of setting out tasks which cater for those who learn visually. 

The second resource I love to use, is the literacy learning toolkit (https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/teachingresources/discipline/english/literacy/Pages/default.aspx). This resource is very helpful when it comes to delivering content in regard to literacy, it has gotten me out of a bind many times if I’ve felt stuck or needing extra assistance. It explores the way children learn literacy, giving hot teaching tips and activities to ensure the best possible outcome for students.

Week 3 Reflection

The resource I have chosen to help teachers find quality children's literature is the ‘The Children’s Book Council of Australia’ (https://cbca.org.au). I thought this was quite fitting as they are a nationally recognised entity. They award the CBCA book of the year award for books that tackle challenging social topics condensed and embedded into children’s literature to raise awareness in a tasteful manner. The book of the year announcement gives teachers a place to see what is trending, and find information on the most recent books with an important message and engaging story.

Week 2 Reflection

This was a photo I took on my placement. It is a chart used specifically by the students to recognise the different areas in writing they can be working on, as identified by their teacher. These writing focuses can change for different lessons, or can be used as long term goals for students. The chart uses visuals, colour so students can easily locate and focus on what they need to, even if they are still learning to read, and their own photo for easier accessibility and identification.

 This poster is useful in this classroom setting as it is versatile and has many uses (long term goals, short term goals, anchor chart for remembering different writing strategies in general). It is inviting and students can easily see what they need to work on, whilst establishing the idea of using anchor charts on a regular basis if they need assistance instead of relying on the teacher.

Week 1 Reflection

A book I remember vividly from my childhood was The Magic Faraway Tree, which was a text which was read to my class consistently when I was in prep/foundation. It had only become known to me this year the age of the book itself, being first published in the 1940s. This astonished me, and shows how literature can be timeless, and still relevant to society up until this day. I was read The Enchanted Forest around the same time by my parents and adults in my extended family, which I appreciate immensely knowing how important being exposed to reading and the artistic brilliance books have to offer. This has influenced who I am, having a love for the arts and the story-telling which can have an affect on many people. I highly rate teaching literacy, it holds great value in my life and in society.
