Derek decides not to refuse his instincts and stalks towards Stiles, staring intently at him.
He watches Stiles's eyes dilate as his hand goes to the back of Stiles's head.
Derek uses Stiles's newly grown-out hair to pull his head back, tongue licking the juice from Stiles's throat.
Derek only stops when he hears a car engine turn off just outside—more of the pack arriving.
He smirks when Stiles stays still, head tilted, pungently aroused.
Derek pulls a little more.
That triggers goosebumps, and he kisses the bumpy texture at Stiles’s neck before finally letting go and moving away.

Stiles arrives first, and Derek continues staring out his window, building up his nerve.
Talking honestly, especially about feelings, isn’t his strength, but Stiles needs words.
When Derek’s ready, he turns to Stiles and freezes.
Stiles has taken a bite out of one of the fruits Derek left out, a peach.
Juice all over his mouth and dripping down his neck.
Stiles notices his attention and gives him a challenging eyebrow.
He probably means to dare Derek to say something about the mess, but Derek would rather do.
Perhaps words and actions aren’t so mutually exclusive, and Stiles will understand.

Even though Stiles obeyed every traffic law, he’s the first to arrive at Derek’s after school.
The rest of the pack, even Allison, should arrive soon for their planning session, so Stiles cracks his neck and puffs out his chest and enters as if nothing’s amiss.
Derek’s too “focused” to acknowledge him—as if the view from the window has changed—but Stiles notices the set-out snacks.
There are only nutritious options.
Stiles wants to tease him so badly and ask who educated him on what growing werewolves should eat, but teasing each other’s not where they’re at right now.

Not helpful to Stiles’s plan of ignoring everything.
Until Scott mentions Liam’s name and Stiles jumps at the topic change with childlike enthusiasm.
“About the pup. Does anyone know when the Theo thing began? Or how? From hostage to Netflix and chill?”
“What Theo thing?”
Most of the pack looks confused.
Wow.
And Stiles was worried everyone knew about his feelings for Derek.
“He was practically crying when telling us Theo was kidnapped yesterday.”

Stiles wakes late Sunday morning to high-pitched growls, and he’s rushing to the window, a smile already forming.
He’s in time to see fully shifted Eli jumping on Derek, knocking them both down, nipping at his dad’s nose, while Derek releases childlike laughter as he begins to plead for mercy.
Stiles decides that his son was correct in calling him a knight because in this moment he knows he’d go to war to keep them safe.
He’s already dispatched the shade Eli spoke with and was hesitating on telling Derek, but now he knows he won’t.
Derek deserves this peace.

After Cora hugs him, gently calls him an idiot, and leaves, Stiles can’t sleep.
(Stiles is ignoring how she also said she’d talk to Derek.)
He attempts an evidence board but quickly realizes he’ll need more information on Deucalion or the Calaveras and meal preps for the week instead.
He finally sleeps after baking some bonus muffins and wakes at eight from his blaring phone.
It interrupted a great dream of him and Derek at a real restaurant, with table linens and silverware, with laughing and smiling and…
The pack declare the muffins yummy and devour them before first class.

Eli sprints over and hugs Stiles, covering him in watercolor paint-stained hands before Derek can stop him.
“Looks like we both need to clean up first, bud.”
Derek uses the time to fill his mate in.
“One of us probably slipped up. Or Dad did. Eli’s eight, not stupid.”
Derek buries his face in Stiles’s neck—finally feeling settled.
“But don’t worry about it; I’ll get to the bottom of it. You keep Eli happy, and I’ll keep us safe.”
Stiles really is their knight in… a watercolor paint-stained linen jacket and jeans.

When Cora heads to Derek’s directly from Stiles’s room—now convinced her brother and Stiles are both idiots—and finds him staring out a window.
“I spoke to Stiles.”
She isn’t expecting an exuberant response, but she is expecting something more than the continued act of being an alley cat that’d hiss if she got too close.
“Apparently you kissed him.”
His shoulders twitch.
“Then you acted like it never happened.”
Nothing.
“He thinks you regret it.”
That only gets an additional twitch.
Fine—but she’s done playing mediator.
“Talk to him.”
Cora hopes he hears the implied “you idiot.”

Derek’s preparing lunch for his son—hummus and potato chip sandwiches, cut into triangles; the meal of choice for the last week—when he notices Eli playing with a new toy.
The recent addition must be his mate’s doing.
“Who’s that?”
“It’s Stiles! The knight in sparkling armor who will save the werewolf from the evil hunters!”
Eli’s voice is full of exuberance, but Derek’s alarmed.
He hisses as he cuts his hand in distraction.
“Eli, where did you hear that name?”
It’s an apt description of his mate, but they’ve stopped using their real names since fleeing Beacon Hills.

Cora doesn’t know what she walks in on when she enters the diner bathroom to tell Stiles and Derek that they better hurry before the food’s gone.
Derek’s hurt, and Stiles’s grin when he says, “It’s nothing,” doesn’t reach his eyes.
That’s why she sneaks into Stiles's room that night.
“Oh, it’s you.”
She gives him a look.
“Sorry. Just tired.”
“I’m sure that’s why your face is covered in tears and snot.”
Stiles uses his T-shirt to clean his face.
Ugh.
“What happened earlier? I’ll listen without judgment.”
This time he makes a face.
“I won’t vocalizemy judgment.”
