In the PHM book, Rocky wriggles his carapace back and forth when he's very confused or embarrassed by something. Other times he simply "cocks" or "tilts" it to the side. However, at the end of the book, Grace describes him doing the carapace tilt again as "what [he's] come to realize is a smile".

I'm sure there's infinite nuances to the gesture, and (at least on a doylistic level) it's likely it was intended to read the same way you'd describe a human character cocking their head in confusion... but I've grown INSANELY fond of the interpretation that it's a Rocky specific thing rather than an Eridian thing, and he's just the kind of guy whose first reaction to something he doesn't understand is smiling

It’s finally done. After over 30 hours of dilly dallying I have finally completed this comic. Thank you to @ninineen for writing the most heart wrenching stories I’ve laid my eyes upon. These two old men make me crazy.

reallyfirm believer in grace being a horrendous sensory experience for eridians as a whole. the misophonia alien. the overstimulation alien. like if worms were bigger and wetter and were more bad to see. all of which is, of course, to facilitate rockys literal alienation ala the metamorphosis but like in the opposite way (hard-shelled bug vs worm) AND i know ive been on this bullshit for months iam still not over it!! socially alienate that guy!!!!! what if you found more comfort and familiarity in an alien rather than your own species. what if everybody could kind of tell. everybody respects rocky & he does have a good amount of political sway but theres a lot of concerned side eye going on behind the scenes & people keep floating by the idea that maybe some separation would do them good. rocky gets baker acted

sowwy. always facing rocky with the choice between reintegrating into eridian society or living with grace. and the only real choice is grace. because even if they werent toxically codependent, grace remains the one person capable of understanding half of what rocky went through. and its like. nobody on erid is being malicious. they just dont get it. they cant get it. and honestly not even grace can Fully get it. but hes the closest, and he has no frame of reference for what eridians "should" be like so he's not pushing for rockys return-to-form. he just wants his buddy.

I just think the concept and subject of Player/Gordon being more of a ''Alien God'' than Benrey is very intriguing to dwelve into in writing and whatnot. I wanted to reflect that in this drawing a bit, how (most) of the AI are all really unaware of the power he truly holds. They interact with someone who they'd consider to be the actual ''Alien''. Gordon is human, they're not, it's two completely different worlds. It's just juicy to think about and character analyze.

This art pertains to an AU but it works just as fine to canonical HLVRAI too very well. The Benrey, Bubby & Coomer drawn for this is designed by @starplatimoon <3
