Rising from Quiet, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

Most of the valleys disappeared beneath the fog, while this ridge remained fully visible above the clouds on the Olympic Peninsula.

Standing in the Fog, Deschutes River, Tumwater, Washington

The water is no longer still.

There is a slight pull now, soft but noticeable. Beneath the low fog, the surface of the Deschutes River begins to move quietly through the frame.

This black-and-white photograph is part of my From Percival Cove to the Deschutes River project, a series following a quiet progression through changing space, structure, and atmosphere.

Beneath the Winter Canopy, Wind River, Washington, 2026

A black-and-white fine art photograph from the Wind River near Carson, Washington.

The forest felt heavy here. Branches crossed above the river. Fallen trees and moss-covered rocks shaped the frame. The scene had a quiet pressure to it.

But beneath that canopy, the river kept moving.

That is what held my attention.

Weight above.

Water below.

Stillness and movement sharing the same winter place.

Resilience in Silence, Timberline, Oregon, 2025

Near Timberline on Mount Hood, the trees do not grow with ease. They grow by holding on.

This black and white photograph was made in the alpine zone of Mount Hood, Oregon, where wind, volcanic soil, snow, and short growing seasons shape every tree that remains.

The summit was hidden by clouds that day. Instead of chasing a broader mountain view, I found myself looking at the weathered trunks, bare branches, and open ground along the mountain’s edge.

The scene felt still, but not empty.

It felt like endurance.

A Sea Between Ridges, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

Nearly every valley disappeared beneath the fog while the ridges stayed visible above the clouds on the Olympic Peninsula.

The landscape slowly stopped feeling like mountains and began to feel more like islands surrounded by a white sea. Fog flattened the valleys while the ridges drifted farther apart into layers of distance and atmosphere.

Leaning Into the Fog, Deschutes River, Tumwater, Washington

The water widens here.

Along the Deschutes River in Tumwater, the shoreline begins to lose its hold on the frame. The fog softens the distance, and the water becomes the subject.

Between Stone and Forest, Wind River, Washington, 2026

This image begins my project Winter Along the Wind River in a close, stone-lined place. The water moves through the frame, but the basalt and forest give the scene its weight.

What held me was the contrast between motion and stillness.

The river moves.

The stone holds.

The forest surrounds.

Drawn Together, Capital State Forest, Washington

Water rarely holds a shape for long.

Along Porter Creek, after several days of steady rain, the current moved quickly through the channel. Shapes appeared on the surface, shifted, and disappeared before they could fully settle.

In this photograph, the water briefly gathers into a soft, unified form. The motion does not stop, but for a moment, the current seems to move as one.

Where the River Slows, Deschutes River, Tumwater, Washington

The Deschutes River is still moving here, but the movement has softened.

Near Tumwater, Washington, just before the river opens into Capitol Lake, the current becomes harder to read. The channel widens. The surface spreads. The fog removes distance until the scene feels less like passage and more like pause.

The moon had already crossed most of its path by this point.

Hours earlier it rose above the ridgeline. Now it was slowly returning toward the forest again. Nothing dramatic was happening. Just a quiet shift that became easier to notice if you stayed with it long enough.

The Shore Opens, Percival Cove, Olympia, Washington

Some changes in a landscape happen quietly.

You walk a little farther and suddenly the shoreline feels different. The space opens. The scene breathes more deeply. Nothing dramatic happened, but something changed.

"The Shore Opens" became a reflection on that moment in a larger journey from Percival Cove toward the Deschutes River.

Windward Stand, Timberline, Oregon, 2025

Standing near Timberline on Mt. Hood, I kept coming back to the trees.

At first the scene felt scattered. Then I started noticing years instead of individual trunks. Wind, snow, and exposure had slowly written themselves into the landscape.

Where the Current Turns, Wind River, Washington

Winter rivers often feel quieter than they really are.

The current still moves with force, but in places like this it changes direction softly, almost without announcing itself. That subtle shift was what caught my attention along the Wind River in southwest Washington.

The forest was still dim when I made this photograph. No direct sunlight yet. Just cold air, dark water, and the steady movement of the creek beneath the trees.

“Currents at First Light” became less about documenting a place and more about watching motion briefly organize itself before disappearing again.
