Steven Moffat Quitting Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall To Take Over

Steven Moffat is officially stepping down after Series 10 premieres in 2017, and will be replaced by Doctor Who writer and Broadchurch showrunner Chris Chibnall.

I have to admit, I’m more conflicted than I expected to be. I’ve definitely not been the biggest fan of Moffat’s tenure as Showrunner, and have taken issue with some of his comments along the way. But I had been pretty optimistic about where the show was headed after Series 8, and I absolutely loved Series 9.

Love him or hate him, you can’t help but admit it’s the end of an era.

So now we get Chris Chibnall. I’ve liked most of the work he’s done for Doctor Who, and I really loved Broadchurch, so I’m curious to see what he’s planning to do with the show!

For now, we’ve got one long year without any new Doctor Who on TV, and one final series with Moffat at the helm. How do all feel about Moffat leaving, and are you excited to see Chibnall take over as showrunner?

I'll ask again. Who can you name who is experienced at writing for DW, showrunning and isn't white/male?

Well, they'd have to be experienced at Doctor Who and/or a consistently good writer - lots of episodes as showrunner, and they'd have to be able to get the right tone for the show. Name someone else who fits the bill? Also, you think that only black people can right black people well? Seriously?

Lmao where the hell did I specify black people (and tbqh Moffat failed so hard at getting the right tone for the show so theoretically anyone could do a better job than him)

Frankly, Gatiss and Whithouse are the best contenders. Gatiss can gauge the tone and fanbase well, and has good ideas. Whitehouse, on the other hand, is generally a consistently skilled and experienced writer. Both have showrunning experience at successful shows, as shown in Being Human and Sherlock. Sorry, they're both white and male. Forget them.

But you're saying you'd rather have someone other than a white guy - what if the best person for the job is a white guy? It's demeaning to basically say 'You've not been picked because you're talented, but because you're ticking a box'.

Because I KNOW there are people out there who are just as good, and their perspective is much needed when it comes to the show.

There’s a ton of people who are just as talented as the white guys currently in charge- they just haven’t been able to show that because of the media’s bias. It’s time to change that

How does the race or gender affect the quality and/or ability of the creator?

Because we desperately need diversity in today’s media, and DW is largely dominated by white men.

As long as it’s something else than a white dude, I’m happy (though I doubt it- this is Moffat we’re talking about, after all)
