Sanctuario de Piedra Herrada, outside of Valle de Bravo, Mexico
El hogar temporal de mariposas monarca
Late last February, the wing-end of the monarch butterfly season here in Central Mexico I journeyed to the Piedra Herrada Sanctuary to witness these departing orange travelers. It was only a few hours drive northeast from DF, close to the chilango favored pueblo magico of Valle de Bravo. We weren’t sure we would see any- by March the Canadian bound females (sorry males, you’re going to die on the way) take flight. But once we got within ten minutes of the sanctuary we had to slow the car down, voluminous rivers of palm sized flutterers surrounded us on all sides. Upon arrival you pay a small fee for entry- but his is no established tourist trap. A couple of families selling botanas at the base of the trail but nothing else in way of bathrooms or reception centers. After a two hour hike up steep, narrow knotty trails or a 40 minute joint jolting horseback ride and you arrive... to a surprisingly small semi-cleared area where shhh!! if you’re quiet and tranquil enough, these native North Americans will rest on your head, hand or nose, allowing you for a moment to contemplate their incredible transcontinental existence.

Espacio Escultórico - UNAM
Nestled in the southwestern confines of University City, the mega campus inhabited by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), lies this lightly tended beauty, el espacio escultórico (inelegantly translated, the sculpture space). Inaugurated in 1979 this massive outdoor area was in part crafted to create parallels between art and ecology, reflection and volcanic rocks, design and wildflowers. To find yourself entirely encircled by gargantuan cement wedges, you take a twisting path from Mario de La Cueva past buzzing clusters of green and brownery to reach this free of charge reserva.
