Mary II of England

Today's topic is Mary II of England. Did you know...? In an attempt to damage William, James encouraged his daughter's staff to inform her that William was having an affair with Elizabeth Villiers.

James's, and was named after her ancestor, Mary, Queen of Scots.

Following the death of either William III or Mary II, the other was to continue to reign.

James's Palace in London on 30 April 1662, was the eldest daughter of James, Duke of York (the future James II & VII), and his first wife, Anne Hyde.

Popular histories usually refer to their joint reign as that of "William and Mary".

Edward I of England

Today let's discuss Edward I of England. Did you know...? Of these, five daughters survived into adulthood, but only one son outlived his father, namely King Edward II (1307–1327).

His papal bull addressed to King Edward in these terms was firmly rejected on Edward's behalf by the Barons' Letter of 1301. When the King died in 1307, he left to his son, Edward II, an ongoing war with Scotland and many financial and political problems. In the mid-1290s, extensive military campaigns required high levels of taxation, and Edward met with both lay and ecclesiastical opposition. Eadred

Today's topic is Eadred. Did you know...? King Eadred responded harshly to the northern defectors by launching a destructive raid on Northumbria, which notably included burning the Ripon monastery founded by St.

Clement's Day), 955, at Frome (Somerset), and was buried in the Old Minster at Winchester. 10 He died a bachelor, and was succeeded by Edmund's son Eadwig. After a number of successful operations elsewhere, he came to Northumbria and appears at some point to have set himself up as king. Although his forces sustained heavy losses in the Battle of Castleford (as he returned home), Eadred managed to check his rival by promising the latter's supporters even greater havoc if they did not desert the foreign prince. Edward the Confessor

Today let's have a look at Edward the Confessor. Did you know...? Confessor reflects his reputation as a saint who did not suffer martyrdom, as opposed to King Edward the Martyr.

Saint Edward was one of England's national saints until King Edward III adopted Saint George as the national patron saint c. 1350.

In the early 1030s Edward witnessed four charters in Normandy, signing two of them as king of England.

Edward was the seventh son of Æthelred the Unready, and the first by his second wife, Emma of Normandy.

Siward was probably Danish, and although Godwin was English, he was one of Cnut's new men, married to Cnut's former sister-in-law.

Oliver Cromwell

This week's subject is Oliver Cromwell. Did you know...? A place in this influential network would prove crucial to Cromwell’s military and political career.

Born into the middle gentry, albeit to a family descended from the sister of King Henry VIII's minister Thomas Cromwell, Cromwell was relatively obscure for the first 40 years of his life. Before joining Parliament's forces Cromwell's only military experience was in the trained bands, the local county militia. He made little impression: records for the Parliament show only one speech (against the Arminian Bishop Richard Neile), which was poorly received. 21 After dissolving this Parliament, Charles I ruled without a Parliament for the next 11 years. Edward V of England

Today let's discuss Edward V of England. Did you know...? Edward IV's will, which has not survived, nominated his trusted brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, as Protector during the minority of his son.

His mother, Elizabeth Woodville, had sought sanctuary there from Lancastrians who had deposed his father, the Yorkist King Edward IV, during the course of the Wars of the Roses. The Latin inscription on the urn can be translated as follows: "Here lie the relics of Edward V, King of England, and Richard, Duke of York. In the anime Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji), Edward and his brother are presented as ghosts haunting Ludlow Castle. Anne, Queen of Great Britain

This week's subject is Anne, Queen of Great Britain. Did you know...? As queen, Anne favoured moderate Tory politicians, who were more likely to share her Anglican religious views than their opponents, the Whigs.

Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) n 1 became Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland on 8 March 1702. After Mary's death in 1694, William continued as sole monarch until he was succeeded by Anne upon his death in 1702. His suspected Roman Catholicism was unpopular in England, and on Charles's instructions Anne was raised as an Anglican. Henry VII of England

Today's subject is Henry VII of England. Did you know...? By means of this marriage, Henry VII hoped to break the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France.

In 1503, Queen Elizabeth died in childbirth, so King Henry had the dispensation also permit him to marry Catherine himself. Amiable and high-spirited, Henry Tudor was friendly if dignified in manner, while it was clear to everyone that he was extremely intelligent. Henry VII introduced stability to the financial administration of England by keeping the same financial advisors throughout his reign. Starting in 1486, Henry VII became involved in the alum trade. Stephen, King of England

Today let's have a look at Stephen, King of England. Did you know...? Stephen's reign was marked by the Anarchy, a civil war with his cousin and rival, the Empress Matilda.

He was King of England from 1135 to his death, and also the Count of Boulogne in right of his wife. Placed into the court of his uncle, Henry I, Stephen rose in prominence and was granted extensive lands. Stephen (c. 1092/6 – 25 October 1154), often referred to as Stephen of Blois, was a grandson of William the Conqueror. Elizabeth II

Today let's have a look at Elizabeth II. Did you know...? Her mother, Elizabeth, Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth), was the youngest daughter of Scottish aristocrat Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

Elizabeth later said in a rare interview, "We asked my parents if we could go out and see for ourselves. She has seen major constitutional changes, such as devolution in the United Kingdom, Canadian patriation, and the decolonisation of Africa. Charles II of England

Today's topic is Charles II of England. Did you know...? Charles's English parliament enacted laws known as the Clarendon Code, designed to shore up the position of the re-established Church of England.

As a result of the Second Dutch War, Charles dismissed Lord Clarendon, whom he used as a scapegoat for the war.

Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685) c was monarch of the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Charles dissolved the English Parliament in 1681, and ruled alone until his death on 6 February 1685.

The English Parliament resolved to proclaim Charles king and invite him to return, a message that reached Charles at Breda on 8 May 1660.

George V

Today's subject is George V. Did you know...? As a son of the Prince of Wales, George was styled His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales at birth.

The many places named after him include a reservoir and a dock in London; King George V Park in St. George V gave both his name and donations to many charities, including King George's Fund for Sailors (later known as Seafarers UK). May's father, Prince Francis, Duke of Teck, belonged to a morganatic, cadet branch of the house of Württemberg. Other memorials include the King George V Playing Fields in the United Kingdom. George III of the United Kingdom

Today's subject is George III of the United Kingdom. Did you know...? George III hoped that "the tongue of malice may not paint my intentions in those colours she admires, nor the sycophant extoll me beyond what I deserve", 113 but in the popular mind George III has been both demonised and praised.

After a final relapse in 1810, a regency was established, and George III's eldest son, George, Prince of Wales, ruled as Prince Regent.

In the later part of his life, George III had recurrent, and eventually permanent, mental illness.

George III (George William Frederick; 4 June 1738 – 29 January 1820) was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 25 October 1760 until the union of the two countries on 1 January 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death.

Edgar the Peaceful

Today's topic is Edgar the Peaceful. Did you know...? He was the younger son of King Edmund I and his Queen, Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury.

Upon the death of King Edmund in 946, Edgar's uncle, Eadred, ruled until 955.

Eadred was succeeded by his nephew, Eadwig, the son of Edmund and Edgar's older brother.

Edgar was the son of Edmund I and Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury.

Edgar I (Old English: Ēadgār; 943 – 8 July 975), known as Edgar the Peaceful or the Peaceable, was King of England from 959 to 975.

Henry V of England

This week's subject is Henry V of England. Did you know...? While he was in England, Henry's brother Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence, led the English forces in France.

Henry V (9 August 1387 – 31 August 1422 1 2 ) was King of England from 1413 until his death at the age of 35 in 1422. He married Catherine of Valois in 1420, and their only child was Henry, who became Henry VI of England. He was the son of 20-year-old Henry of Bolingbroke (later Henry IV of England), and 16-year-old Mary de Bohun. Henry V died suddenly on 31 August 1422 at the Château de Vincennes, Vincennes, Kingdom of France, apparently from dysentery, 22 which he had contracted during the siege of Meaux. That's all for now. Today let's discuss James II of England. Did you know...? The claim to France was only nominal, and was asserted by every English King from Edward III to George III, regardless of the amount of French territory actually controlled.

The official style of James in England was "James the Second, by the Grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, etc." James made one serious attempt to recover his crowns from William and Mary when he landed in Ireland in 1689. This tension made James's four-year reign a struggle for supremacy between the English Parliament and the Crown, resulting in his deposition, the passage of the Bill of Rights, and the Hanoverian succession. Edmund I

Today's topic is Edmund I. Did you know...? King Olaf III Guthfrithson conquered Northumbria and invaded the Midlands; when Olaf died in 942, Edmund reconquered the Midlands. 2 In 943, Edmund became the god-father of King Olaf of York.

In the summer of 945, he was captured by the Norsemen of Rouen and subsequently released to Duke Hugh the Great, who held him in custody. He was a son of Edward the Elder and half-brother of Æthelstan. Æthelstan died on 27 October 939, and Edmund succeeded him as king. Louis, son of Charles the Simple and Edmund's half-sister Eadgifu, had resided at the West-Saxon court for some time until 936, when he returned to be crowned King of France. That's all for now.
