Steven and Connie were very close friends. They spent most of their spare time together, and even when their both busy. Connie does well when it comes to fighting alongside Steven, but Steven is no match on the tennis court. He still thinks the "death strike" is real technique.
Steven and Connie had arranged a sleepover for the night, the first they've had since they stayed at Connie's during a snowstorm. Connie promised to come over at twelve in the afternoon, exactly. Connie was pretty punctual, most likely a habit adopted from her mother, and a very useful one at that. It helped to keep Steven's free spirit in check, especially when they fused into Stevonnie.
Connie knocked on the door of Steven's house. It was only to get Steven's attention, as the door was almost entirely a screen door. Steven's face lit up when he looked and saw Connie at the door. He got up quickly to open the door, pausing the show he was watching and running down the stairs from his room.
"Connie!" Steven greeted his best friend at the door, hugging her.
Connie returned the hug. "Hey, Steven! So glad I made it. This is gonna be so fun!"
"Absolutely!" Steven agreed as he removed himself from the hug. "I figured we could head out and get something to eat, then maybe come back here. I have some games and a few movies, but we could always go out and find something else to do."
"Sounds great!" Connie replied enthusiastically. "But, I have to ask, where are the other gems?" Looking around, there were no other humanoid figures in the room besides the two of them. "I told my mom they would be here. It's okay if they aren't, I should just let her know."
"Oh, no, there are gems here, but some of them went out." Steven recalled where everyone said they were going. "I think Amethyst went to Vidalia's to help with a painting, and Pearl went somewhere with that mystery girl. I never did get her name..."
"What mystery girl?" Connie asked, not aware Pearl was even open to socializing with humans outside of Beach City.
"Me, Pearl, and Amethyst ended up going to a concert after my dad couldn't go with Amethyst. Pearl seemed to like this biker lady, and when we went to the show, she was there! Pearl got her number, and they've stayed in touch since." Steven explained, surprised he hadn't told Connie about that night.
"Wow! So Pearl's on a date?" Connie exclaimed.
"Yeah, I guess so. I'm really happy for her. She's finally getting over mom and, if I'm honest, I didn't know I'd live to see the day. I'm just glad I did." A soft smile showed itself on Steven's face.
"I'm surprised, too. Especially with what you told me about Empire City, I didn't think it would be soon enough before she tried to go out with anyone else." Connie thought for a moment, then decided to continue the original conversation. "So, where's everybody else tonight?"
"Lapis and Peridot are walking around town. They've only really been on the barn and here. I thought they would enjoy a walk around Beach City." Steven was assured by both gems they would be fine, but Steven did worry about those two. "Garnet and Bismuth are in the basement, pet sitting. I thought Lion would stay up here, but him and Cat Steven have been getting pretty close."
"Those two are pretty adorable, especially when Cat Steven slept on Lion's mane at Garnet's wedding." That picture was Connie's current phone background because it cheered her up so much every time she saw it.
As Connie was deep in thought about the cuteness of Lion and Cat Steven, her stomach growled, catching the attention of both her and Steven.
"Why don't we get something to eat?" Steven suggested.
"I think that's just what I need." Connie replied as she walked outside, grateful for the suggestion. "You know, you always have the bits, but I've never actually tried them."
"Well," Steven started as he closed the door behind him, following Connie, "I think we should change that."
