3.08, “I Got Your Number” - Everyone’s Got Something

If you just read a synopsis of this plot, it seems pretty silly. A years long feud about a Little League jersey number is settled. Okay.

But between the way the flashback is handled and how this whole thing is resolved, it was actually executed surprisingly well.

In the past, TJ and Jonah had both dealt with issues of mental health in a closed-off way. TJ’s response to his learning disability was anger and shame. Jonah’s response to his panic attacks was fear and shame. Neither wanted others to know about what they were going through.

Which makes this such a remarkable scene. You really see the growth they’ve gone through from mid-season two to this point, where they’re able to openly and honestly talk about their personal struggles with each other.

Of course, it’s no surprise that Cyrus is heavily involved in this process, as he was extremely helpful in getting both Jonah and TJ to accept their issues better along the way. I like that he gets a moment to encourage both of them in this scene.

TJ looks to Cyrus for confirmation when Jonah claims the jersey is a 21 because he so implicitly trusts him (more than his own brain here, which is telling him the jersey has a 12 on it). His little “Oh, no” when he realizes what’s happened – that his dyscalculia has betrayed him yet again – is particularly sad.

Then later, Jonah looks to Cyrus when he’s deciding whether or not to tell TJ about his panic attacks and Cyrus reassures him. It’s just a little nod but it’s a nice moment that has Cyrus basically saying it’s both okay to talk about these things and that TJ is a trustworthy person to talk about them with.

It’s a very sweet scene and a great way to callback TJ helping Jonah at the Bar Mitzvah.

so I am 23 years old and I love Andi Mack and all its glory - not ashamed! It could easily pass as a show for adults, not a typical Disney Channel show - but the fact that it is a Disney Channel show just makes it so amazing!

Also: I am totally going to use this show in my lessons when I start my teacher’s career next year (senior student this year)! Sooooo many incredible lessons to be learned through the show that I would have teached anyway.

I LOVE Tyrus and that whole storyline. I wish I had this show when I grew up, doubting myself about being gay and all. I also struggled with panic attacks, ANOTHER thing the show deals with? And parents situations not being optimal and omg. I just love this show.
