EVoting: 4 Advantages of EVoting
eVoting or electronic voting is a method of casting votes using any sort of electronic device. The most common device used in this process is an EVM (Electronic Voting Machine), supervised by any governing or any independent voting authorities. There is also i-voting, consisting of internet-connected computers, used by local bodies for any kind of local elections or even for the people who can't go to the booths to cast their votes.
Electronic means of voting are not new to humankind. It has been in use since the '60s. In India, EVM took over the Paper Ballots in the early 2000s. Developed by the Election Commission of India collaborated with two other electronics limited companies, an EVM consists of a Balloting and a Control Unit. The balloting unit is the machine we see in voting booths with buttons to cast votes. The control unit controls the balloting unit and records the votes. The eVoting method is comparatively new and is majorly used by local bodies of various offices, clubs, colleges, and schools. It allows voters to cast their votes privately from their homes, using the internet on computers or mobile phones.
Reduces the Electoral Cost:
EVMs were first introduced in the early 2000s, costing up to ₹6000 per machine. The initial cost was high, but with time it saved a lot of money that used to be invested in the production of crores of ballot papers. The cost of storage of the papers, men appointed to personally count the votes, the transportation cost, all of these factors could be avoided by using electronic devices like EVM. It is estimated that for every general election, more than 10 thousand tonnes of ballot papers are saved, which reduces the cost of electoral elections.
Increases the efficiency of Elections:
The electronic method of casting votes can give an assurance to a voter that his or her vote is counted. Since the paper ballot method was completely man-handled, there was always a chance of the papers getting lost or damaged while collecting or transporting to a different place. With the electronic system, the efficiency of the election process increased.
Reduces the number of Electoral Frauds:
In recent years, there are some speculations of EVM tampering in various electoral booths, but we can't ignore the fact that it helped to reduce the number of fake casting votes, majorly in the paper ballot era. Since the papers were handled by people, it was quite easy to manipulate the voting results. The electronic voting system reduced electoral fraud quite efficiently.
Speeds up the Election Process:
After the introduction of eVoting, the entire process of printing papers and transporting them to the booths disappeared, resulting in faster counting of votes and publishing of results.
The future of the electronic voting system is very bright, as many new technologies are getting introduced to the world more frequently now and it can create endless possibilities for a more efficient and secured election process.
