Hey, this is a post for my friend Lux, who can't write one at the moment.
They're a housebound disabled trans person who urgently needs donations because their current rent costs more than their entire disability cheque. (This cheque is the maximum amount they can receive, and Toronto has a serious lack of accessible housing that prevents moving.)
They're coming off more than a year of homelessness, abuse & police violence that left them really messed up, and they've been unable to pay for accessible transport to get medical care. I've witnessed them go days without eating and suffer really badly with this situation. They have had housing for 6 months (and only have stable housing here until December) and are still without many basics. There's a serious need for ongoing donations, both to keep them alive now and to try and improve things.
Immediate funding needs:
cabs to medical appointments to replace broken glasses and other assistive devices and basic things they've needed for months, as well as stuff like food and hygiene items. This is their amazon wishlist with some of those items.
Ongoing funding needs:
hydro bill – high because of heat intolerance and MCAS (fans, air filters, extra laundry etc)
phone & internet
credit card bill (groceries, hygiene supplies & other ongoing costs)
Their paypal email is [email protected]

Leviticus 19:9-10
Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the Lord your God.

Creator God, Help us to know what enough looks like and to leave behind what we do not truly need. Show us ways of sharing outside of the idol of capitalism, and how to redistribute our abundance.
Definitely masking up post-COVID (x)
Also, let’s keep having soap and disinfectant dispensers everywhere.
By contrast, I’ve been getting the same number of sniffles that I do every year even though there’s no one to catch them from, which is how I learned this year that I’m not prone to minor colds; I’m prone to hayfever.
Ohhhh…..
except for people with undamaged immune systems, getting colds sometimes is desirable???? and also all that hand sanitizer is contributing to superbugs, right??? like. we definitely should wash our hands with soap, but I am super worried about what this level of antibacterial detergent and sanitizer is doing long term. correct me if I'm wrong tho...

Reminder that puffins are extremely social and like to fit in with their friends, so they will adopt mannerisms and interests of the group. So there is a good chance this little guy is trying to be friends with the photographer by showing his interest in the camera.
TIL photographers are a lot like puffins, cuz we also make friends by showing interest in your camera XD
Reminds me of the time researchers were trying to get puffins to land in a specific area so the put decoys up to draw them in but the decoys only had 1 leg and
this is so fucking cute
A bird explaining to a hedgehog crossing so it doesn’t die.
!!! ok but that’s legitimately what it’s doing!! That’s a corvid right there (looks like a hooded crow, to be precise), which means it’s intelligent enough to recognize, a) cars are dangerous and streets should be treated with a certain degree of caution, b) this car’s slowing down for them–cars do that sometimes–which means they’re not in imminent danger, so it doesn’t have to fly away just yet, c) that hedgehog’s still gonna get killed if it doesn’t MOVE, FAST (cars can change speed very quickly and the hedgehog’s still in the way), and almost certainly also d) if the bird does nothing it gets a free lunch.
Y’all, Y’ALL. This bird is consciously deciding to put itself in danger in order to save the life of a very stupid creature. A creature which, if the bird did nothing, could be free food.
i can’t - look if you follow me you know I have a thing for corvids, but this is - like!!! People are always saying “ah yes they have sub-human intelligence and don’t consider anything that isn’t immediately necessary for their own survival/pleasure,” but! Whether or not it can do philosophy, this crow is clearly demonstrating compassion. Even if it’s just the kind of compassion a toddler shows to a snail, a social creature that instinctively recognizes the potential for emotion in other beings, that’s still huge and cool and important and corvids!!! are! neat!!!
Also, by the car stopping for them, that hedgehog has two other species actively working to help it stay alive for no gain of their own.
I keep watching this wondering if this is actual cross-species altruism, and you notice that the corvid keeps moving back behind the hedgie to prod it forward. If it was just harassing the hedgie or playing around, why make such a clear attempt to herd it in a specific direction?
I’m no expert on animal behavior but this seems to also imply that this corvid also specifically understands enough about hedgehogs to understand a hedgehog fear response (curl into a ball and stay still) and how also to get the hedgie moving in spite of that. This is so fascinating.
