When I first met my client Jennifer to discuss her Bed Stuy backyard, I found out that her grandparents had an apple farm. So we made sure to include an apple tree in here space. Using an espalier form allowed us to utilize the sunniest part of the space without taking away the light from the rest of the garden. This way we were also able to plant an ample amount flowering shrubs and perennials, which bloom throughout the growing season.

Low Maintenance Gardening
I’m excited to start working in the soil here in Western Michigan and the fact that Northwind Nursery is a little over a 4 hour drive from here. I follow similar plant care practices to Roy Diblik. It’s all about caring for the soil!Â
I thought it would be good to introduce myself.
 Hi! I’m Valerie and I just moved back to Muskegon after 34 years! It’s taken me awhile, though I have been visiting regularly every winter and summer. In those years, I have graduated from MSU with a Bachelors of Arts in Art History. Moved to the Island of Nantucket where I lived for 8 years and took up gardening professionally. At the end of 1999, I moved down to Brooklyn NY at did a stint in the floral department at Takashimaya on 5th ave before settling in with a position at Evan C Lai Landscape Design. I spent 15 years with Evan building and tending rooftop gardens in Manhattan. Then I spent a year in San Francisco tending private gardens before moving back to Brooklyn and setting up my own business.Â
And now I am here. Ready to reengage with my favorite landscape here along Lake Michigan!Â
