OKAY. Too many people have been commenting how Lydia’s characterization is getting broken because of Stiles. AND NO IT IS NOT IF THERE’S ONE THING TEEN WOLF GOT RIGHT THIS SEASON IT’S LYDIA’S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Let me present you with a point!!!
Lydia is smart. She is confident she is smart. Being smart is what gives her confidence. Starting season 3, Lydia has already come to terms with her intelligence, and stopped hiding it. Remember when she said to Aiden that she didn’t want to be one of the bad guys. Because she was part of the pack. She was the highly intelligent one, the SMART, KNOWLEDGABLE ONE WHO FINALLY FELT THAT HER KNOWLEDGE WAS SOMETHING TO NOT BE ASHAMED OF AND SOMETHING SHE COULD ACTUALLY USE FOR GOOD. Lydia’s a perfectionist. She knows books and languages and terms and she knows them FOR SURE. She trusts herself with what she knows is right, because she knows she has all the background knowledge and passion for it.
NOW IMAGINE THAT BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM HER. Don’t even think about Stiles or Stydia. Just think about Lydia Martin being told by everyone else, her friends and her family, that she was WRONG. Despite feeling in her heart that Stiles is real, she is still trying to use her mind, the booksmart one that believes in facts and terminologies. That even despite her trying to present factual evidences (like the jeep, the picture, Claudia), people are still telling her she’s wrong. Now, if you add her heart into the equation who is not only feeling heartbroken about Stiles not being there, but is also sad over people losing hope on something she believes in. SHE HAS ALL THE REASON TO CRY AND FEEL DESPERATE AND SPEND HER TIME TRYING TO SCRATCH THAT ITCH IN HER MIND AND HEART TELLING HER THAT A BIG PART OF HER IS MISSING. Lydia Martin is the one who figures it out along with Stiles. For some reason, she can’t figure it out this time. If you’re a perfectionist and if you’re someone who considers being smart as your best trait, then you would understand that whatever Lydia Martin is feeling right now is accurate. It hurts when people call you dumb or wrong. Especially, when you believe that you are right. You’ve studied for it, you’ve experienced it, but nobody believes you. Take Stiles out of the picture, and replace it with Lydia trying to get into a prestigious college and people telling her she can’t. It’s exactly like that. Everybody knows she’s smart, but the people she loves are telling her that she can’t, that she’s wrong, that she can’t get into that school and she has no idea why people don’t believe in her. she’s smart. she’s lydia martin, but she can’t figure out why. Now, put Stiles back. She thinks she loves this boy who she can’t even remember. LOVES. She feels it in her heart that something is missing. AND OF ALL THE THE THINGS SHE WOULD PROBABLY OKAY WITH BEING WRONG ABOUT, STILES, A PERSON SHE BELIEVES SHE LOVES, WOULD SERIOUSLY NOT BE ONE OF THEM. This is something she’s passionate about. This is not a mathematical theorem she made that her teacher says won’t give her plus points (which she immediately dismisses). This is STILES. Her best friend, someone she has a strong connection to. And being wrong about his existence and her feelings about it...damn.
So if you put into an equation form: People telling Lydia Martin she’s wrong through her factual presentations=Lydia Martin’s knowledge, something she prides herself for, is dampened + Lydia’s feelings of loss over Stiles + people thinking there’s something wrong with her mental health + not having anyone believe her thoughts and her feelings =
OF COURSE, LYDIA MARTIN IS BREAKING. OF COURSE, SHE’S GONNA CRY. HER CONFIDENCE IN HER KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES ARE BEING OUSTED. OF COURSE, SHE’S GONNA TRY AND TRY. OF COURSE, SHE FEELS WEAKENED. BECAUSE LYDIA MARTIN HAS BEEN BUILDING UP HER COURAGE OVER THESE PAST SEASONS AND THIS PLOTLINE CAPTURED HER RIGHT. SHE IS HUMAN. SHE IS NOT JUST A BANSHEE OR A PART OF SCOTT’S PACK. NO SHE IS A PERSON WHO’S LOST SO MUCH AND HAS HELD HERSELF TOGETHER AFTER LOSING ALLISON AND NEARLY DYING COUNTLESS OF TIMES FOR SO LONG SO LYDIA MARTIN DESERVES TO CRY. SHE DESERVES TO LET HER HEART TALK. SHE DESERVES TO SLIDE DOWN A WALL AND CRY OVER THE PEOPLE AROUND HER TELLING HER THAT HEY MAYBE THIS TIME YOU’RE NOT RIGHT. SHE DESERVES TO SPEND HER TIME TRYING TO FIX HERSELF BY LOOKING FOR CLUES. SHE DESERVES TO HELP HERSELF. SHE IS NOT BEING BOILED DOWN TO STYDIA. NO, SHE IS CHOOSING TO DO THIS BY HERSELF. SHE WANTS TO FIX THIS. SHE WANTS TO GET THIS RIGHT. SHE WANTS TO PROVE THAT SHE CAN FIGURE IT OUT. BECAUSE SHE IS LYDIA MARTIN AND SHE WILL NOT BE BOILED DOWN AT ALL.
