Leaving Winterfell // Returning to Winterfell
I feel that I've owed everyone an explanation for why I don't wear a headscarf anymore. (And that's a problem.) When I started wearing it 10 years ago, I didn't think I owed it to anyone other than God. The choice was one of inherent self discipline and devotion to a practice/faith. It's funny that the next assumption is that I then must have stopped wearing the headscarf as a byproduct of diminished faith. Consider the following: my faith and practicing of Islam isn't linear, nor does it rest in my outfit choices. I've measured my progress as a Muslim by the scarf on my head for far too long. And you probably have too. I hope to reach a point where I will once again practice hijab in its full capacity, complete with an unadulterated intention. But I hope even more that you'll stop equating how women dress to their worth as a Muslim. This also goes out to all the social liberals that must think taking off the headscarf is my personal liberalization and stand against the patriarchy (LOL think again.) I'm grateful for the hijab and Islam. I've learned more about feminism from practicing hijab than any white feminist thinkpiece could have taught me, so please stop trying to save me.
