Dino Compagni ce lo descrive come un uomo nato e cresciuto a Firenze, non troppo avanti con l'età (presumiamo abbia vissuto tra i 35 e 50 anni). Aveva capelli e occhi scuri, e portava i baffi col pizzetto. Svolgeva la professione di mercante - occasionalmente anche speziale - e non s'era mai sposato. (Quando ad una festa ciò venne fatto presente, Corso Donati commentò: "Siamo sorpresi?" Cosa volesse insinuare è ancora un mistero per i filologi contemporanei.) Era nota la sua amicizia con uno dei tanti Guidi che infestavano la città, un'amicizia travagliata che sembra aver affrontato gli alti e bassi di una vera e propria storia d'amore. Tuttavia sappiamo da fonti secondarie che nei suoi sonetti lodava una certa Monna Ghita, o Margherita; il resto della produzione era composto da mediocri tenzoni. Non è chiara la sua posizione politica: probabilmente s'era disilluso con entrambe le fazioni (guelfa e ghibellina) e stava da sé, come l'Alighieri suo contemporaneo, che pure odiava da lontano (assieme al resto degli stilnovisti). Castracane pare aver avuto un'altissima considerazione della propria poesia, che tuttavia non risulta essere stata particolarmente apprezzata né quando era in vita né dopo la sua morte. (Giovanni Villani riporta un commento del Cavalcanti a riguardo: "Quando scrive s'indignano i ciechi, e quando legge piangono i sordi.") Un tragico epilogo attese questo sfortunato poeta di nicchia: nel diario di Pietro Bembo troviamo scritto che il cardinale venne in possesso dell'unico codice che tramandava certi suoi versi, ma li trovò talmente squallidi che strappò le pagine in un raptus e lì usò per pulirsi il purpureo fondoschiena. A fine pagina compaiono degli scarabocchi interpretati come: "Avrei preferito fosse Dante. Ma vabbé, fa niente."
