Okay, so Iāve been rewatching Supernatural again (The eighth time, I think) and I just got to the episode where Dean is arguing with Mary, then Mary says Dean is not a child and then Dean comes back with his heart shattering line, āI never was.ā
And it got me thinking:
Who was the better parent? Mary or John?
Not that either of them were terrible or fantastic by any means. No parent is perfect. But which one deserves less hate. I think John. And before anyone freaks out, I have an explanation.
Everything John did was, in the end, to protect his family. To protect Sam and Dean. He sold his soul to the same demon that killed his wife, and that heād been hunting for at least 20 years, for his son. For Dean. He literally threw away everything heād done in search of yellow-eyes because he cared about his son more.
Mary? From the moment she was brought back her main focus was herself. And I get it at first, she was just brought back from the dead, her sons now full grown adults and it was very disorienting. But what she says when her and Dean are arguing, that she is not just a mother, thatās what pisses me off.
Now, Iām not a mother myself but from what Iāve heard, after you become a mother, you never stop being a mother. Even after you die, you are still a mother, you just arenāt physically in your kidsā lives. So Mary saying that was like her basically telling Sam and dean she wished she never had them. And that may seem a bit dramatic and I know that sometimes mothers need breaks from their kids but doing what Mary did to Sam and Dean when all they wanted was their mother for just one moment, just pisses me off so much.
So, Iām leaving a poll at the end so anyone can vote who they think deserves less hate. John or Mary?
