What’s with all these stimboards in the tags sourcing gifs to pinterest reuploaders? Why would you even look for gifs on pinterest to repost to tumblr? So many of these gifs have been floating around on tumblr much longer, just credit the original gif makers or don’t use the gif at all.

OP, I’m not sure how much you understand so I apologize if I’m stating the obvious, but the reason people think you’re being rude is because you’re not abiding by their internet culture and acting like you’re better than them for it.

I don’t think the original reply was polite in any context, but in the culture the fuck you guy and everyone defending them are from, it’s perfectly appropriate. Some places here do operate on “None of us know each other, but we are going to talk like we’re friends anyway. You can play along and become actual friends, or you can leave.”. This is not any better or worse than acting like you don’t know each other because you don’t, it’s just a different environment.

I think if you calmly restated this was serious and to please not without making an example out of someone (even if you left them anonymous you’re still making them an example) you would not have had too much backlash. And even if you did, you can still block them. But instead you dragged someone to the gallows and got mad when the crowd reacted. Even worse you told a crowd how to react, which I don’t think I have to explain is not how a crowd works.

I do agree, we are in general too comfortable being assholes to strangers on the internet. But the fuck you guy wouldn’t be an asshole unless they doubled down. They weren’t trying to be an asshole (the :D and parentheses made that abundantly clear), they just misread and y’all culture clashed very hard. Even if they were, the block button is right there.

That's kind of the entire point of the post. I realize that there is an emerging culture of casually being rude to strangers on the internet, and my point is that makes it less pleasant to exist here sometimes. Literally like moments after I made the original post, someone thought it was funny and cute to antagonize me in a way that I had specifically just said I did not enjoy. That...sucks, honestly. Not in a world-ending life-ruining way, but in a way that makes my day just a teeny bit worse. It wasn't always like that, it's a relatively new phenomenon, and I think we should stop normalizing it. We used to call people who antagonized you solely for the sake of making you mad trolls (that's the original meaning of the word) and told each other not to feed them. The fact that newer internet users are being introduced to this like it's normal, and perpetuating it, is kinda sad to me.

And if you read the notes here, I would say the vast majority of people agree with me. Sure the post itself looks like nothing but a barrage of pushback, but I would say that's less than 10% of the sentiment in the replies and reblogs. People are tired of it. People don't want to be on their guard constantly when engaging with others. Sure it's enjoyable for some people to treat social media (or whatever you'd call tumblr) like it's pvp, but you should be opting into that, not out of it. If that's how you like to engage with others, I'm not going to stop you or tell you you're wrong. I'm just asking you to confirm first that your sparring partner is going into this with the same vibe that you are, and that you're not actually just punching a random bystander.

why do people like you want credit for making a gif of someone else's footage? its not yours

I'm gonna ignore how rudely this ask is written and answer honestly, since I see sooo many people asking about this.

There's multiple reasons gif creators ask for credit!

IT PRESERVES THE ORIGINAL CREATOR

If a gif is posted without credit, the original source is lost. That's why I specifically ask people to link back to my original post- So that the original source of a gif is never lost in a chain of deactivated blogs. If the original source isn't accessible, the next best thing is reverse image search... Which is pretty dreadful nowadays.

I think this is the most important part!

2. GIF CREATORS DON'T JUST CLIP VIDEOS

I know personally when I create gifs from a video, I also do colour correction, adjust saturation, correct jittering, etc. It takes time! On top of that, good gif creating software that allows for these corrections aren't free! The program I use cost around $30usd.
