She stood there: she listened. She heard the names of the stars.

life updates w/ izzie: dying of the flu, but got into my first choice of grad school
CHARACTER AESTHETIC: the astrophile (requested by anonymous)
though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in ( perfect ) light; i have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.

let me show you my npcs or you’re a fake fan.
THE DIRECTOR.
the founder and head of the DMV, the director is one of a species known as world-eaters: massive, shape-shifting cosmic entities that (as their name suggests) are fond of eating galaxies. the director, however, is a terrible representative of his species. he created a pocket dimension, inhabited exclusively by plants, and sought to live a peaceful vegan lifestyle. but his plans were dashed some eons later, when reality itself, weakened by all the bullshit and disrespect from heroes and villains alike, collapsed on and destroyed the dimension he had curated.
in the wake of this awful tragedy, which claimed the lives of billions of plants, the director dedicated his life to maintaining the structural integrity of the space-time continuum, and founded the DMV. he enjoys scrapbooking and easy-listening music.
DR. REGINALD M. FISHER.
noted polycosmologist dr. reginald molluscus fisher is the chairman of the DMV research division. also, he’s a telepathic snail, about the size of a human palm, with three doctoral degrees in the fields of astrophysics, biology, and cultural xenoanthropology, in which he wrote a groundbreaking dissertation on fertility rituals in the alpha centauri system. given the mobility limitations of a snail’s body, dr. fisher often rides on his coworkers’ shoulders when out in the field. in his labs, he’s devised an elaborate system of pulleys, slides, etc. to get around.
nobody is sure whether dr. fisher is the only one of his kind, or if he comes from an entire lineage of telepathic snails.
AMMA BRIGHT.
amma bright is one of bea’s mothers, portrayed above in her younger years until i decide on the right present-day faceclaim for her. beatrice was born and raised in amma’s home universe, a cyberpunk alternate earth, where amma worked as a mechanic. bea learned most of their technological expertise from her, and also inherited, for better or worse, her rebellious streak. (amma tacitly supported bea’s Teenage Hacktivist career, for example, because like… sure, mom worries, but it’s not like she’s gonna tell her kid to stop fighting the power???)
she is currently traveling the multiverse with her wife, and probably sends beatrice goofy photos on a regular basis.
consoleborn.
‘ well, ’ curving over the frame of his sunglasses, one dark brow arches. ‘ only for the past, ah, two hundred years or so. ’ from the capital wasteland to the great, irradiated commonwealth, and, fairly likely, the countries beyond: this is the world now. this is the world as it’s always been.
he thumbs at an itch on his nose, squinting at her behind the tinted shades.
‘ y’know, if i didn’t know better, i’d think you’d flown straight down from mars. ’ teasing,definitely teasing, but not unkindly: ‘ – you aren’t, are you? ’
❛ hmm. ❜ she ruminates on that for a moment. there’s something tragic, of course, about post-apocalyptic worlds--- an ache one feels seeing a planet essentially reduced to bones. but they’re also eminently hopeful. every person, every plant, every hideous irradiated animal is a testament to life’s resilience, like a flower (or at least a weed) blossoming from a grave.
there’s no official workplace rule preventing beatrice from explaining the truth, but it’s sometimes easier to play along.
❛ neptune, actually! they sent me here to see if earth was ready to join the interplanetary federation, buuuut you guys failed the test, sorry. ❜
Send a 🙌 and I’ll introduce you to an NPC related to my Muse.
This means any minor ‘background character’ in my Muse’s life, such as a relative, coworker, friend, rival, etc. that they interact with in their personal canon.
CAIN: It didn’t feel like— like a gift, or a curse, or any of that. You have to understand. It was an accident. It was just an accident.

❛ ---so there i am in these ruins, mid-stitch, i’ve got threads of reality wrapped all around my fingers like a kid playing cat’s cradle. suddenly, in come twenty soldiers in full plate armor, and they’re like by the power vested in me i am authorized to place you under arrest! and i’m realizing, this universe never made it out of the middle ages and now they think i’m a witch. so it takes an extraction team of half a dozen agents to get me outta there, and last i heard, that verse has a cult worshipping us now. ❜
a beat. they click their tongue, as solemnly as tongue-clicking can be done.
❛ and that’s why you always look both ways before crossing dimensions. ❜
beatrice is like if a manic pixie dream girl archetype escaped the clutches of her sexist writer and joined the ensemble cast of an intergalactic office sitcom
