Exiled At Home - Jeremiah 21:1-10
This sermon by Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Hill comes from Jeremiah 21:1-10. It explores the question of what should we do when we have to choose between two bad options.
Be Still
Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.
Psalm 46:10 (New Living Translation)
I must admit that it is extremely difficult for me to wait. I will often do things that I have asked others to do for me if I have to wait too long on them. This difficulty also creeps into my prayer life and relationship with God. There are times when I (dangerously so) take matters that I have previously placed in the hands of God into my own hands. I have found that these are times where I make mistakes — great mistakes. Yet, I still sometimes find it difficult to wait on God without taking matters into my own hands and relying on my own strength to resolve my issues. I am sharing this spiritual insight with you because I believe that I am not alone.
Here is how I am learning to be still. The beginning of Psalm 46 says, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in the time of trouble.” We are traveling through life with a vantage point of only being able to see what is right in front of us (sometimes we can barely see this). Learning to be still has taught me that God sees us from far behind, far ahead, and everything around us. I am learning to listen and to hear God in every instance of life. It has been an experience learning to trust God with both the things that I can not handle and the things I believe that I can handle, but the rewards have been tremendous.
Lord, help me to completely trust in You as my strength and protector in every instance of life. Grant me the patience to allow You to make me into the perfect creation that You have intended for me to be. Amen
