Paige was board. Paige was extremely board. The three were watching their show, Tony was messing with his stupid collection of clocks, and Paige literally had nothing better to do with her day.

So! Why spend the day being board when she could entertain herself?

Which was how she found her way to the mansion. It was big, much like a castle, and it drew her interest instantly.

Of course, why knock and talk to the owner when one could sneak in one of the doors and surprise them? Whoever lived here was going to be in for quite a shock.

Xavier’s car hadn’t been in the driveway when she crawled in. Poor Patch had never been trained for a break-in but she was in the way of the nearest phone. 

He whimpered from underneath the dining room table, clutching its leg and watching her, a stranger, roam around his master’s house. Was this one of Xavier’s weird friends or was she stealing something? The basement was locked shut with a passcode blocking it, but what if she went in Daniel’s room?

Okay, if I was an under cover cop, what reason would I have to come over for? And: do undercover cops being their friend sweets. And bang them? I don't think so.

                                  “And maybe then I’ll think about it.”

         He gives him a look.

                     "And about caring, well, I don’t want                       liabilities… They’re a pain in the ass.“

“I feel you on the liabilities, Mr. J.” Xavier shrugs. “Guess if you don’t wanna show me around, I’ll just go snooping again. By myself. It’d suck if I twisted an ankle or something, right?”

Xavier folds his arms, sticking his chin into the air. 

“If robots and lasers aren’t science, I don’t know what is. Tell me, Mr. J, what kind of ‘science’ is done around here? Because I’ve been snooping around and all I’ve seen is toys.”

                     "Robots with no meaning other than                       to just shoot lasers isn’t science…                                   Robots and machinery with                                   true purpose is science, boy…“

     He makes a face, then grumbles, rubbing his      temples harder now.

          ”What did I tell you about doing that?              Especially when I’m not around?                               Idiot, you can get killed                               around here….“

“Or how about…? I give you a million, you make whatever you want with it, and if I like it, I’ll keep it. If I don’t like it, I get a portal gun.”

                     "Not gonna work, kid….                        Not gonna make some silly robot with                        lasers; I already have enough turrets                        that sing too goddamn much as it is….“

       He’s rubbing his temples now, trying to rid        himself of a migraine threatening to surface.
