it isn’t that the marlowe brothers were mistrustful of the prominent and founding families of magnolia, it was that they prided themselves on being self-sufficient. with or without magic, god or no god, the end times could fall upon the earth at any given moment and their friends and family and neighbors would be prepared.

why a family whose beliefs and rituals were rooted so firmly in access to water settled for a small lake (that has since shrunk to a generous pond) is anyone’s guess. perhaps because they were taught to shun using their magic in all but the most dire of circumstances (or those that would most benefit the group, depending on who was in charge). if it could be accomplished without magic, it was; and if it was so large an ask that it required a price paid, it was— nearly as many babes made it to their first breath as those that didn’t, according to the family records.

the creep of technology, of eminent domain, of old age, of illness, pushed the coven elders towards further and further megalomaniacal uses of magic to their own gain. with modern-day prepper mindsets, it’s not uncommon for members to have lost a few seconds, a few minutes, some breath, some memories to the water in sacrifice for the greater good of the coven.

still, there’s never been a marlowe who couldn’t read tea leaves or coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup, didn’t know intrinsically where the tides were or what phase of the moon would rise each night; couldn’t hunt and fish and camp and survive with or without the sacrifices of magic.

VIBES: think the drowned god of the greyjoys / what is dead may never die / waterbenders / bloodbenders / sovereign citizens

NOTE: today’s coven is mostly disbanded (unless anyone wants to try to take up the mantle of holding them together while lex was out of town), but could nominally include marlowe cousins and friends and neighbors nearby who joined in and had a Not Great childhood of neglect, doomsday prepping, and trauma.

Athenian Insurgency Militia (AIM)

It started out small—whispers of discontent and quickly washed away graffiti—as the movement grew quietly. Plenty of citizens were unsatisfied with the state of society post-war, but only some were looking for tangible, concrete ways to affect change. The Athenian Insurgency Militia was born in alleyways and back rooms, initially bred from reluctant soldiers, whose pain and anger were left no other options in the wake of war, and which sparked a fiery revolution that continues to spread to this day.

The first recorded attack on the Consortium by AIM was mere months after the end of the Great War. Before the construction of the Ruhanga Jumpgate on Gaia, there was only the Ladon-controlled jumpgate, primarily meant for Consortium use and negotiations between the families after the war. A member of the Athenian Insurgency Militia piloted a spacecraft into the gate, damaging and forcing it out of commission for months so that it could not be utilized by the Consortium during that crucial time.

AIM has been known to kidnap and ransom minor house family members for large sums of money. There have been calculated bombings on the home planets, strategic attacks on shipping routes and spacecrafts, attempts at hacking into government technologies (such as CINs), and more. There have also been unintended consequences, civilian casualties, and property damage that has ruined families. While some have been glad to make the sacrifices, many others have not.

In retaliation, the Consortium has vowed to take down AIM by any means necessary. Twelve years ago, the Consortium captured and tortured a crucial founding member of AIM, locking her away on Tartarus with the promise that she would never see freedom again. To this day, the governing body remains dogged in their search for other members of the antagonistic organization.

Individuals who can act officially on behalf of AIM are welcomed into the group by invitation only. For more information on how to get involved with this opposition group, there will be a Want Ad on the board to assist with questions and coordination.
