Elizabeth of York was so fond of card playing and betting games -much like the rest of her court- her accounts were full of gambling debts being paid in and out. After her death, Henry VII continued to pay her debts without a second thought. Popular belief states that after her death, Henry ensured that the form of a deck of playing cards was standerdised and that Elizabeth appeared on them, holding a Tudor Rose. Indeed, the traditional image of the Queen of Hearts does show a woman remarkably similar to the c. 1500 portrait of Elizabeth in her red dress, holding a white rose (the headdress the Queen of Hearts wears under her crown shown on the card is certainly of the Early Tudor era), but that story may be only a legend…
