Long life update on the blog (storiesbylara.com/blog), but tldr: It’s already Feb 1, and I haven’t bothered to write about last year. Truth is, 2015 was a mountain. And by that I mean the type you prepare months beforehand to hike, and when you get there, you still wish you hadn’t bothered. But I’m here, I got through it (somehow), and I will continue to barrel through. If there’s anything the last year taught me, it’s that I am tougher than I think. January has been great to me so far, here’s hoping the rest of the year is just as crazy (the good kind), travel-and-art-filled and happy. Man, this post is long overdue. Che and I came up with this baby way before we even thought of creating Ringo and his story, and I somehow found it locked away in my desktop. Not our first comic, but definitely our first short and a concept we were playing with for a while before we decided to do a full story. Here's the first strip. Enjoy.

Why always back to the age of 5?
Hi anon,
That… is a really good question, actually. I haven’t thought about this, and I had to read back on my blog to see what prompted this question. I see now that I do write about wanting to go back to the age of 5. In retrospect, I guess this could mean many things. My decision to write about returning to the age of 5 has never been deliberate. Unconsciously, there must’ve been something about my childhood that I have always longed for, especially when things go askew. To be honest, it’s hard to put into words what my five-year-old self must’ve felt like, but let me tell you then about what I remember:
I remember summer – one long, extended summer. I remember the warmth of my parents’ bedroom, the sun rays seeping through the windows, the colors: brown, orange, and yellow; my parents’ old bed – the one I used to pretend was a horse as I rode my armies to victory; the old off-white cabinets: climbing atop all of them, pretending to be a solider, or a spy, an astronaut, a sharpshooter.
I remember that I used to sleep in my parents’ bedroom, right smack between them. This meant burying my face in my dad’s underarm to fall asleep; this meant listening to mom’s voice as she read bedtime stories every single night. This meant that when they were off to work, they’d leave me handwritten letters in a Corona notepad I have long misplaced. If they were going to get home late, I’d know.
I remember the mornings, how my grandmother (who was alive at the time) would kiss me and sing until I opened my eyes. She sang to me every morning, and when I’d ask her how she got there (she lived in a province 6 hours away), she’d tell me she rode a magic carpet through the night that brought her to her favorite person and place.
I guess, that’s what five feels like. Like magic. No rules; no norms to conform to; no social pressures, nothing. There is a permanent, very vivid image in my head of what five is like, and it feels a lot like freedom.
