...Okay, I have heard of that first part, but the subscription service thing is news to me. Shouldn't the government pay for it, given they're forcing this onto everyone? Users shouldn't have to pay for a service they don't want in order to use something they've already been using for free. Not to mention this would gatekeep the Internet even more when added to the verification requirement.

That seems very logical, but I have come to find that the government does not like to work on logic at times. That - and it is not the government is mandating that the social media sites charge the users, it is the social media sites that are bringing up the idea as a collective.

I think they are just with it because subscriptions make a profit. And if every company does it, people do not really have anywhere else to turn to because in the end you still have to do ID verification.

I do not think the government likes the idea of a free internet.

Have they started rolling such policies out where you live? I am surprised you do not like this because it would be easier to mete out the justice if you know who everyone is. Then again, most people have different tolerances for the security versus freedom paradox.

Governments do love surveillance, that's true. And companies, money. I bet it's a match made in heaven for them. And one made in hell for everyone else.

They haven't... yet, at least. Besides, It's already easy enough to track online activity without attaching your government ID to every account, and requiring that might make people stupid enough to post their crimes online less likely to do so. Those idiots make investigations so much easier when they just confess without even being asked, I'd hate to disincentivize that kind of stupidity.

...Then again, I'm not actually sure they'd even connect verifying their identity with the fact that they're being monitored.

I heard that my local government will require social media sites to have their users be verified with their government IDs.

In order to cover the cost of this, all social media sites state they will require a subscription that will be tied to a credit card. The social media site will then charge a subscription fee in order to pay for the added cost of this verification service and comply with the new government laws.

Numbers seem to be along the lines of $10.00 for a monthly subscription and $30.00 for a premium one.

So I guess in order to have your money's worth, you should complain often.

Justice is a form of fairness. It is not something I emotionally understand with all its nuances, though Ethics class has impressed upon me its overall importance. But my sister summarizes it as good should be rewarded with good and evil punished with evil.

Do you think you will grow up to bring justice through the system then like a lawyer or a peace officer or a judge? Do you believe that justice is a matter of lawfulness? Or do you think that civil disobedience or vigilantism has its place in justice?

That's a pretty good summary on your sister's part. In a perfect world, that's how it would be. How it should be.

I'm studying criminal justice in school right now; when I graduate, I plan to join the police force. The best way to bring change is from within, after all.

Hm... again, in a perfect world, justice and law would be one and the same. But I'm not so naive that I don't realize that's not always the case in what people like to call the "justice" system. It's easy for evil people to gain power and write laws in line with their own agendas. Or they find loopholes in the law so they can commit their crimes without consequence. With enough money and influence, they can make any wrong seem right, and the courts will buy right into it, throwing the victims out to the wolves. Is that justice? I don't think so.

Vigilante justice is... hm. I'm part of an ongoing investigation to track down a specific vigilante. Seems someone was as fed up as I am with the current system and decided to take punishing criminals into their own hands. I might see where they're coming from, but it's still murder. And they don't seem to care about killing anyone who gets in their way, either, even if those people are innocent...
