EMPLOYEE OF THE SUMMER
Here at Store 1008 we love our team members. As customers walk in the door, it’s all of you that make the first impression. You are the face of our store. As we go into the busy summer season we want to highlight the employee who goes the extra mile for our customers and fellow employees every time they’re working. That’s why instead of an Employee of the Month, we’re doing Employee of the Summer! Two Months in One. The months of June and July are where we really rely on our employees to step up customer service and make everyone who comes into the store feel welcome. As managers we know our store is only as good as our employees. Helping each other out on the floor not only helps business but it also makes everyone’s job a lot easier and that always leads to a fun and productive workplace. So continue that great customer service and help your fellow employees. We’ll be watching and at the end of July we’ll start collecting ballots and announce the winner in August.
The Winner will not only receive a certificate and a shout out on the tumblr, but also a very special prize to be revealed at a later date.
CONGRATULATIONS TO KYLA AND VINNY FOR THEIR EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE!
KYLA STEPPED UP AND HELPED TRAIN OUR NEW EMPLOYEES ON CLOSING PROCEDURES AND VINNY HAD A CUSTOMER CALL OUT FOR EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GUYS!
WE LOVE WHEN OUR EMPLOYEES SET THE STANDARD FOR OUR FUN AND UNIQUE STORE.
🎅 🎄🍕 🍝 HOLIDAY PARTY 2K15 WAS A SUCCESS 🍬🎁 🎊 🎉
Thanks to everyone for coming out!
Last Sunday went so smoothly - all thanks to the amazing amazing staff that day!
After the entire store was 30% off from 6AM - Noon, our staff worked hard to repair the store by the end of the day. The sales floor and cashwrap were both looking great and the go backs were finished by 7! Thank you so much to the opening staff who got here at 5AM, our managers for bringing donuts and coffee, and all of the mid-day and closing associates who worked incredibly hard.
Another Black Sunday conquered!
🙏SHOUT OUT TO OUR AMAZING NEW MANAGERS 🙏
Ally and Vernon are new to the Surplus team, but after only a couple of weeks as our new Woman’s and Men’s Operations Supervisors, they have become just as much of our team as the coworkers who have been here for years. Keep shining you guys! We really appreciate all of your hard work 💕💕

💫✨ OCTOBER EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH NOELLE HELM ✨💫
Shouts out to Noelle! The second Employee of the Month at UO Surplus 😍 Noelle has a well deserved reputation of being one of the most reliable and kind hearted employees here at Surplus. She gets the job done quickly and with a great attitude - and the support from her peers shows that. Congrats again Noelle, and keep up the good work!
So Noelle, before you worked here you went to school in Idaho. What’s the biggest difference about Idaho and California?
I would say the biggest difference would have to be the environments completely. I went to school in a small Mormon town in Idaho, where the nearest mall was a 30 minute drive down a four-lane highway. It is completely different out here in LA! Immensely busier.
How do you like to spend your days off?
I usually like to spend a good amount of time to myself, resting or taking care of things that I've put off. The rest of the time, I like to go bug my friends and family to do something with me.
What was the most challenging task you have had to do thus far, and how did you accomplish it?
I (luckily) haven't had to face anything incredibly challenging so far, but one instance stands out to me. There was this customer that I had to ring up that had an unfortunate attitude, and that's putting it lightly. She was so immensely rude, I have never had such an encounter with someone before! That was my biggest challenge: remaining calm with her while I had to interact with her and even remaining calm after it was over. I felt like I had passed the ultimate test when she finally left the store. Ooo. She was not fun.
If you had to choose between The Habit and Starbucks, what would you choose and why?
Why would you ask me this, how could I choose! Hahaha! Honestly, I'll have to pick Starbucks. They always have my back when I need to wake up, and none of their managers have claimed that I'm their girlfriend. (That happened at The Habit, I'm a little reluctant to go back now)
What is the funniest or the weirdest story you have from your time at Surplus?
You know, it's rare to go a week here without ending with some strange story! There are so many! From my time here, I've met a man from Pluto, a woman who turned in her ex to the CIA in D.C., I've been stalked to a certain degree, and there's an old man who claims to know my dreams and where I'll be in ten years. I think of that old man as "Stinky Pete," thanks to Nicole (s/o) who told me about that resemblance! Stinky Pete has been around from the very start; I rang him up on my first day after being trained. I had no clue what I was doing, and he never lets me forget it! Just the other week, he said to me: "So when are you leaving?" Not sure how he figured that out... I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up on my last day. Ultimately, the customers we get at the Surplus store definitely keep it interesting!
What do you like about working here the most?
My coworkers! I love everyone I work with. I'm truly so lucky to have found this job, and to have gained a second family with Urban.

💫 ✨SEPTEMBER EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH GABE GOMEZ 💫 ✨
Was anyone surprised that Gabe turned out to be the first Employee if the Month at Urban Outfitters Surplus - ever? Counting the votes I definitely wasn’t. Gabe brings his bubbly personality and positivity to work every day, and is a favorite among customers and staff for his trademark helpfulness. Congratulations Gabe! And keep up the good work 💕
So Gabe, you are an Urban Outfitters Surplus veteran. What was your favorite part about being at our store when it opened?
My favorite part about opening the store was being able to meet a lot of special people and help put the store together! It is crazy how fast time flies by! I remember walking in on my first day and seeing nothing but a lot of boxes and people building a ton of stuff!
How do you like to spend your days off?
I like to spend most of my days off crying ☺. Next question please.
I don’t really have a certain way I like to spend my days off but some of things I do on my days off are listening to music, doing hoodrat things with my friends, going to concerts, going to Johnny Cupcakes, going to Disneyland, talking about Lana Del Rey, and other fun stuff!
What was the most challenging task you have had to do thus far, and how did you accomplish it?
This is a hard question, because I have faced many challenges working there. They have all contributed in helping me become a better person and learning how to persevere. I am thankful for some of the people I work, because when I feel like I can’t figure things out, they always seem to help me find a solution to my challenges. If I had to pick the most challenging task, it would be learning how to deal with terrible customers! We occasionally get some awful customers, but I have learned to be patient.
If you had to choose between Lana and Linkin Park, who would you choose and why?
Why would you ask me this ‘Old Sport?! I was really young when I first heard Linkin Park and I have never grown out of it and probably never will! They got me through almost everything! But I would have to pick Lana Del Rey. Her music and voice is something else! Her music hits the hardest! Don’t believe me? Listen to “Young and Beautiful” and “The Blackest Day”. Those will leave you emotionally unstable for days! LANA OR DIE!!!
What is the funniest or the weirdest story you have from your time at Surplus?
Wow. I’ve been at the store for a while and I have seen a lot! There is always something going on at the store! It keeps things fun! Some of the stories that stand out… that one time I got punched in the face by our old boss for scaring him! One of my best scares ever! Another story would have to be that one time Raven brought a deep fryer to work and we deep-fried almost everything! No joke! We even deep-fried White Castle Burgers! Oh I also fell off the ladder and knocked down the entire top row of shirts on the Woman’s wall!
What do you like about working here the most?
What I like about working here the most is being able to work with some of the coolest people I’ve ever met! I have made some really great friendships working there and I have learned a lot through these people! Our store is like no other! The memories I have made and experiences I have been through are mainly the reasons why our store is special to me. It is a fun job and being able to work with friends is definitely the best part.
Our $5 Sale at the Sherman Oaks Street Fair was a huge success! Special thanks to Melanie and Cameron for making sure everything was running smoothly outside, and thank you to all our hard working cashiers who were killing huge lines all day!! 💕
Last Saturday we said goodbye to our Woman's OP Sup Nicole! We wish you the best back at Studio - don't forget about us 💕
