Is there any particular way to get started with being a scare actor?
Easiest way to start is just by doing it. Nothing will truly be scare acting until you're scare acting. Don't worry though, we all start out this way.
Whether it be your local amusement park, haunted house, or just a community-ran scary forest. I started out in a haunted GARAGE. So there is really no wrong way to go here as long as it's safe. You can usually find applications to scare either online or within local communities.
And if you want some extra advice...
After you find your haunt, I'd recommend learning everything you can about it. What auditions are like (which is usually improv and it's super awkward but so WORTH IT) and what rules they have in place there. Most haunts tend to have similar rules such as:
1. Not getting too close to guests (try to not get within arm's length as to prevent them from swinging at you). As well as avoid guests who look angry as a whole. Eventually you'll get what I call Scare Actor Senses. You can take a quick look at a group and know if they'd be a good scare or if they could be a danger to your haunt. Always trust that sense.
2. And SCARE FORWARD! Which means don't scare directly in front of people. It might sound silly to get into a traffic jam of people and monsters in a haunted house, but it can be very dangerous as well. Scaring from behind and to the side to get the guests running out in the correct direction is always the better call.
After you've auditioned, met your haunt team and are nearing opening night, ITS TIME TO PANIC!!!! But wait! Don't worry because you've been PREPARING for this!!
1. Drink LOTS of water throughout the week before opening night (I like to do stretches throughout the week as well but as long as you stretch before a night of scaring, you should be good) don't forget to bring water with you to your haunt as well!
2. Write down line and character ideas!! It's no fun if you're just grunting at people all night. Who IS your monster?! What's your name, back story, and goal? Are you a crazy townsperson baking people into pies? Or a creepy clown possessed by their former performance partner? It doesn't need to be a novel, but these ideas can help shape your interactions and make you more memorable. Think about your costume and prop. Who would use and wear those?
3. Take a deep breath. You've got this. Performance anxiety is the worst, but realize that a haunt is a mini community, too. Once you're in, people have your back. Guests will do things you're NOT expecting, which is why it's always good to be near your fellow monsters.
The biggest thing to remember is to pace yourself and HAVE FUN!!! Some nights can be crazy but the good 100% outweighs the bad. Haunt season is here! Meaning there's no better time to start than now!

As a scare actor, obviously I love including everyone in haunts. Accommodations are not the reason most haunt fans are upset at the news...

The reason why the necklaces are even happening is likely to give parents a reason to allow their kids to do the FNAF house with them.
The problem with having more kids at the event is more parents complaining about the scary park scaring their kids or offending them somehow (I wouldn't be saying this if it hasn't happened. Protective parents have threatened my life before).
The fear is that eventually HHN will try to tone down the event to stop dealing with parent complaints. It has happened at other haunts before.
But I still also completely understand that some people want to enjoy the spooky atmosphere. The only thing is that HHN isn't really about the traditional Halloween spooky fun you're after. Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party (which I also adore) absolutely is! But Halloween Horror Nights puts the emphasis on HORROR. Literal murder scenes with gore, fog, and strobe lights. But I can still understand if you just want to enjoy those scenes, too. That's what the sidewalks are for!
Again though, I need to stress, that obviously there's nothing wrong with accommodations. Every time I do a haunted house with friends, I make sure to bring supplies to help if someone gets overstimulated. When I see little kids being shy or timid around the monsters, I do my best to welcome them in the way my character would! Halloween is for everyone!
But at the same time, my heart goes out to the actors over at HHN this season. Not even because of the arguments those necklaces will cause, but because of the kinds of crowds they're going to be dealing with.
Now I'm not gonna parade around any sort of anger towards this new route HHN is taking. I probably won't even bring it up again- because as long as people handle this news responsibly and respectfully, then there wasn't even any issue in the first place! I'm a hopeless optimist (which is a little ironic as a dedicated scare actor), so I'm glad that more people can be involved, but I'm also incredibly cautious at the dangers this might start- not just for the other actors, but the guests as well.
