The latest, September 2022
Well, let's be honest, it's mostly been bad news. Three scans showing tumour progression and a stroke.
However, on the upside, I'm still here and wow what amazing friends we have and what an amazing village we live in.
Early in the journey, we decided we'll need to fundraise and wow, I'm blown away by the sheer amount of people have given, but more than anyone, Anna. She's been so amazing, picking up everything I've just dropped, fundraising, caring for me and looking after William full-time. And to everyone, who's donated time, resources, strength, money, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
So where are we, tumour-wise? It's growing unabated, despite temozilmide and PCV. I've just started carboplatin chemotherapy but it's quite unlikely that it will work. You never know though. Given minimal side-effects and just a single intravenous 1 hour long session every month, it's worth a shot.
I've had a consultation with Care Oncology and they have put me on a daily dose of Metformin, Atorvostatin and Mebendazole. These are repurposed drugs and the aim is to stop tumour metabolism.
I've had a consultation today, 18/09/2022, with Dr Matt Williams which was incredibly useful. He was able to cut through the bewildering medical terminology and advise a route ahead. He's a brain tumour specialist at Imperial College Hospitals in London. He just does brain tumours. My oncologist here mostly does head and neck cancers, so the increase in specialism of Dr Williams is crucial.
As my biopsy was 9 years ago, it's a good idea to get it re-analysed as there have been technological advances in this time, to try and work out what the tumour is. There are several treatments possible, dependent on the tumour type.
He also suggested reirradiation may be a good option. This might have to be private treatment, which is expensive but literally, that's why we're fundraising.
He's said it would be worth starting to take Prozac as there is some evidence this may have an effect too.
One downside is that he was sceptical about the use of immunotherapy on recurrent tumours and pointed to a lack of trial and patchy anecdotal evidence for their effectiveness in treating tumours once they've become recurrent. I'm not ruling this out in the future, but it's going on the back burner for now.
I want to be explicit in my thanks for everyone's help, so thank you from the bottom of my heart to:
