Your eyes crack open from a restless, short slumber.
The countryside speeds past your sitting form in the rattling, tinny bus. The greenest of grass blankets a rural landscape, complementing a watercoloured sky. The sunset, a picturesque canvas fallen upon the world, its soft hues blend beautifully into a masterpiece.
The sun almost seems to dissolve into the rich, placid colours of the evening as it dips down past the eye, taking its final bow before the show ends.
You groan quietly in protest of your interrupted peace and rub your temples before looking out of the glass window.
You marvel at the serene sight before your eyes, and your demeanour instantly shifts to a more laid-back, calmer tone. The country has always been the prettiest view you've seen— it never fails to put you at ease. Your attention is peeled to it as you tilt your head and lean closer, obsessed; infatuated almost.
Imposing mountains tower over the vehicles, making you feel slightly smaller than usual. They’re green and rocky near their peaks, soaring to incredible heights. A few birds can be seen scattered around the almost-blue sky, flying with an elegant grace. Their wings flap with a light force, pushing them through the skyline.
The sun stands tall with the peak of day over the scenery, more harshly now with the leaving behind of spring. Trees are littered around the hills, their leaves a light green; the lush hue of an upcoming summer. A subtle breeze wafts into the bus with the slight, angled opening of your window. It hits your face and tousles your long locks, gentle and soothing— like being sung to a lullaby before sleep.
The patterned moquette cushioning is tattered from use—flat and uncomfortable under your weight. It smells like old diesel fumes mixed with a specific, abhorrent dampness that you've tried to block out for the past hour. Clutching your bag tighter, your form stays rigid.
You're not used to this kind of life, where your phone service doesn't work for more than an hour. You always got everything given to you on a silver platter growing up, privileged with a view of tall, bright skyscrapers and the midnight subway route. You never imagined yourself anywhere else.
Following the untimely death of your grandpa, you were his only heir alive. Living a 9-to-5 in a cramped office setting, clacking away at keys and tolerating it only for the check. You'd rather been anywhere else half the time. In his will, he had given to you his vast farm. Which resides in a small, unknown valley.
You said that at any chance you'd get, you would break free from your monotonous office job. When the opportunity arose, you clutched it with shaking hands of glee.
And now? You're travelling to that anywhere else in a dingy bus that just about classes as safe to operate.
Your focus diverts to a gateway sign that's slightly faded at its corners, where the metal gains rust on its poles. It reads: "Welcome to Pelican Town" in big, worn-out letters.
So the "anywhere else" has a name. Pelican Town.
The glee you felt that day at leaving behind a life you once had slowly dims with every second you spend on this bus. Sleep is no feat on this vehicle, with the engine coughing up every ten seconds.
Pressing your forehead to the fogged-up glass and taking a steadying deep breath, you watch as the valley begins to come into view.
The rich greenery dominates your peripheral vision as the bus drives under canopy trees that loom over the passengers. It's an old town, with exhausted fencing neatly laid on each side of the entrance.
Your gaze meanders around the foliage, and just before you can get enough, you're plunged into darkness. A long, winding tunnel is a challenge for the bus to scale, with its maximum speed just scraping 50 miles per hour.
When the light hits you, it's extreme and then not. The bus emerges from the tunnel, slowing to a halt at a run-down bus stop. You stretch and grip the handle of your bag tighter in preparation.
An announcement rings out of the flimsy speaker hung on the ceiling of the cramped vehicle. The voice that comes out of it is scratchy, grating.
"All passengers for Pelican Town, please get off the bus now. Pelican Town, people."
You rise from your chair, legs feeling like jelly after sitting for hours on end. Grabbing your suitcase and bag, you travel down the aisle with immense struggle before stepping off the bus. The doors hiss behind you, and with a loud splutter, off rolls the health hazard.
Dropping your bag on the ground and relaxing your shoulders, you're met with an unfamiliar face. A senior man, wearing a green button-up, brown overalls, and a messenger cap, stands proud in front of you.
"You must be the heir." He gives you a warm, welcoming smile. He has his hand outstretched for you.
"Welcome to Pelican Town. It's a small community here, so you'll fit right in. I'm Lewis." You clasp your hand in his and shake firmly.
"Hey, Lewis," you chirp. "This seems like a lovely little place."
"Sure is. I'm the mayor around here, have been for 20 years now. Come— let me show you to your farm.." He gestures with his head and spins on his heel, expecting you to follow. You hastily pick your bag up and roll your suitcase to catch up to him.
The sound of the wheels clattering against uneven cobblestone echoes between you and him. You have no clue what's waiting for you behind the thick abundance of plants. Anticipation streams through you with every step taken.
It's not a far walk to take from the bus stop, but when you freeze at the entrance, your eyes widen.
Honestly? You expected a lot from your grandpa. Overgrown bushes, wild plants, and absolute clutter were not in the consensus. You don't think you've seen some of these plants before in your life. Gone was the idea of the lavish farm you had been waiting for, then.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Lewis scratch the back of his neck sheepishly. "It's— not the prettiest sight to look at right now. But it'll keep you busy for the next few days?"
"Yeah," you breathe out. "Busy. Very busy.."
You've watched the sun set and dip past the trees, and the clouds move with the birds as they flap. And you're nowhere near done.
Sweat beads on your forehead as you bend over to yank out yet another weed rooted firmly to the ground. You take a steeling deep breath before you position your forearms.
Your hair sticks to your face, the longer bits tied back into a lazy ponytail. You're in comfier clothes that have gone damp as a result of hard work, and your body starts to welcome a dull ache with open, loving arms.
Your lips purse as you heave with all your might, arms and fingers tense. The ache gets worse with every tug, and you wince at the burning feeling. With a powerful jolt, the weed rips out of the ground, and you don't think you've ever been happier in your life over a plant.
You exhale a breath you hadn't realised you held in and wipe your forehead with the back of your hand. You throw the weed in a massive bucket you've lugged around for the past few hours. Your hand goes up to the surface of your nape, feeling the knotted tension there.
Looking at the plethora of mess you have yet to handle, you groan and bury your face in your hands.
"Your grip is wrong." A southern, feminine drawl sounds out from behind you, and you flinch. You hadn't heard anyone come in. Your body goes tense in alarm.
Your head whirls around to see a red-headed woman grinning at your demise, leaning against a wooden pillar with her arms crossed. Green eyes bore into you, and you looked down to meet an unbuttoned, checkered flannel covering a gray undershirt—with washed-out jeans, a leather belt, and lumberjack boots. Her hair was tied back into a half-updo, her waves spilling out just past her collarbone.
All of a sudden, your body feels.. weird.
A red-hot flush threatens to creep up your neck and expose your feelings. Fluttering beats against your abdomen; your heart rate rises. You don't notice the hitch in your breath or your stubborn, wandering gaze, nor the dry swallow you made to compose yourself. The accent does things you can't understand, a lingering tingle burning under your skin.
You blink and remember where you are, brushing a stray hair away from your face. "Excuse me?" You tilt your head in confusion, meeting the woman's gaze.
"You heard me. Your grip's wrong. Otherwise you'd have done more than that by now." She huffs in amusement, looking at the foliage seeping in. She stands up straight now, figure imposing and a good few inches taller than you.
"And you are...?" Your eyebrow pulls up.
The corner of her lip pulls up. "Natasha. Carpenter. I'm the reason this place even looks half decent."
You still look dazed, staring at Natasha with a bewildered look. A silence blankets your farm, with the ocassional rustle of leaves with the breeze. You make a mental note to check out the town at some point.
You rip through the quiet. "The buildings are all your doing?" You implore, fixing your posture and arching both your eyebrows.
"They're good, right?"
Natasha knocks on the hollow oak, the sound reverberating between you. "Made this one too. She's been standing for God knows how long now.." Her hand flattens against the wood and slides down it before taking paced steps in your direction.
A click of your tongue breaks the moment. "It was nice meeting you, Natasha from the mountains, but I am doing just fine with the weeding, thanks—" You turn your back to her, leaning over to pull the bucket with one hand, it dragging across the dirt.
She lets out a puff of air. "Suit yourself. Can tell you're a city girl."
You halt. "And what's that supposed to mean?"
Natasha tilts her head. "What it means is you have no.. culture. Or experience. Are you even familiar with those concepts?" She condescends with a grin.
You roll your eyes, deadpanning. "That's funny." The red-headed woman watches your form carry the basket with strained arms and dump its contents into a large bin.
All Natasha does is watch you for a second before introducing her southern lilt back to your eardrums. "You met anybody else, or just me?"
"Just you. And Lewis." Your back is no longer to her, now gaping straight at her eyes. She responds with a noncommittal hum, looking back at the sky now. The moon gains volume with the agonising plunge of daytime; its dim, luminescent shape getting clearer. Stars start to pop up in the twilight, scattered around like a canvas on glitter.
"Well." Her folded arms drop to their sides. "Getting dark out now. Gotta hit the hay." Those green eyes stay persistent in their wake, gawking at you openly.
"Yep." You comment, making eye contact with Natasha. Your pupils meet a deep forest, enveloped in a spectrum of green hues. Flecks of yellow float around within the emeralds, adding shine.
"'Night." Her voice goes oddly soft, and the fluttering gets stronger. "Sweet dreams." She prolongs her syllables unintentionally, and it has an effect on you. Her back now faces you, the pattern of the flannel in your vision.
"Goodnight." You murmur, watching Natasha's figure disappear into the darkness. And then she pauses. Turns around again.
"I didn't get your name.." She calls out, and you respond. Natasha repeats your name under her breath, inaudible to you.
"It's pretty."
With that, you hear the shuffling of her receding footsteps. The absence of her presence hangs heavy in the air. You find yourself grateful for the night shadowing your abnormally red face. Wiping your sweaty hands on your trousers, you fumble with the keys to your new house.
A jerking open of the door brings you to the interior of a small, but cozy, cabin. It's got everything you need to live— so you're not complaining. You suck a deep breath in and out before unpacking.
Getting into bed that night was hard. Tucked in under the covers, a certain carpenter comes to mind. Her fiery hair and lumberjack boots floods the canal of your thoughts. Even the thought of her makes you feel that weirdness inside. You don't know what it is. But that's to ponder another day.
Head sinking into the plush pillow, your muscles relax, that chilling ache kicking in. The batting of your eyelashes shut sends you to a whole new existence entirely in the land of slumber.
Maybe this city girl will be alright after all..
Your 6:00am alarm wakes you up and has you rubbing your eyes in protest. You reluctantly get up and get ready for the day.
Coming out in a pink sundress with a cute hairstyle and sitting on the sofa, your fingers scramble for the remote. You grasp it and study the buttons, before clicking the on button.
You're greeted with the sight of a weatherman conducting the screen with a stick. KOZU 5 is stamped at the bottom of the screen as the man drones on.
"—The weather tomorrow will be bright and sunny." After five minutes, you switch the screen off out of sheer boredom. Standing up and slipping your shoes on, you unlock the door and go wandering around the valley.
The town's bigger than you thought: a small plaza with a hospital, a shop called "Pierre's," and a saloon. Houses are dotted around, and you watch the residents run errands. Each house showcases a different story, with different lives. You see kids play around and a sweet old lady watering plants. A fountain sits in the middle of it all, with chiseled designs and thoughtfulness poured into it.
Your feet take you all over the place, and you walk so much that you end up in the mountains. It's quite a beautiful place, with evergreen trees looming. A lake is to your right, the sound of ripples being made and sloshing water hitting your ears. Bird calls fuse into the air as they soar through the air. A gentle summer wind plays with your hair, ruffling the strands. It's peaceful here.
Peaceful wasn't a thing in the city.
In front of you is a house nestled against mountain pines, adorned with sky-blue shingles for a roof. Spirals of smoke twirl up and out of the chimney, dissipating into thin air. Potted ferns perch on the rustic walls, bringing more personality to the house. A spruce sign above the door has a saw etched into it.
Eyebrow raised, you open the door, and a bell jingles softly.
You walk into a rural interior that feels like home. A tattered welcome rug sits at the door, trampled on from use. It smells like freshly cut wood and a hint of herbal medicine. An axe hangs on the back wall, along with framed pictures of smiling people. Directly in front of you lies a small desk with a till and ornamental plants.
And there she is.
Natasha, hunched over that small desk, bored out of her mind. Her ears prick up at the sound of the bell, and she looks up to see you.
"Mornin'." She has a grin on her face, her voice slightly raspy from fatigue. "What brings you here, sweetheart?"
She's wearing a white tank top that leaves little to the imagination, hugging a beautiful body. Jeans hang low on her waist, the chunky brown belt doing nothing to help. Those same thick boots are donned, scuffed with dirt and wood shavings. Her hair is tied back in a loose braid, with stray hairs framing her face.
Sweetheart. A pet name that shouldn't do what it's doing to you right now. Just affectionate. Southerners call everyone sweetheart. Your face heats up, and your lips purse as you try to conceal the rosiness.
"Nothing," you say, chipper in tone. "I was just wandering around. Didn't know you lived here."
"My husband and I. And our kids. Pretty snug place we have here."
"Husband?" Your eyes widen looking Natasha up and down. "You're married? And kids, too?"
Her expression morphs instantly. "Yep. Been married for years now.."
Natasha's tone is slightly off and bland, like the words are forced out of her mouth. Like she doesn't want to live with that fact. The awkward silence that follows is deafening, with both of you maintaining intense eye contact. You swallow dryly, fingers weaving in one another.
Natasha's eyes go elsewhere as the intensity of a past memory hits her all at once. Shouting. A low timbre, and her own voice.
"—That's not how you put the washing machine on."
"I'm sure I would know how to put on my own appliances." She glares at Demetrius. This was their fourth fight just this week, raised voices and heated arguments being the usual in this household now.
The relationship was far from healthy. It tugged at Natasha's nerves seeing her husband's attitude towards her. Even thinking of him as her husband made her body fill with disgust, rage, gnarly feelings that beg to come up and show themselves.
"Yeah? Well, it's fucking wrong.." His voice gradually gets louder, fists clenching under his crossed arms.
Fights like this over stupid, mundane things became a kind of normalcy that didn't sit right in the air. And it always ended the same way, with Demetrius charging down to the lab; Natasha slamming the front door shut behind her. To get a release.
The apologies never came either. It was just a shared look towards one another for an agonising amount of time, and then the two of them were 'okay.' As far as okay actually went.
Natasha's eyes widened with unspoken fury. "At least I actually do the chores around the house. I'm the only one around here who does the laundry, does the cooking, does it all—"
"Okay, calm down. You're getting aggressive."
"Aggressive? You were the one who started this bullshit.."
"Natasha, don't piss me off. It's been a long day." Demetrius grits out with a huff, form rigid against the wall.
"I've had a long day too. You're not the only one." Natasha sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose.
Demetrius took a long moment to stare Natasha in her eyes. "You know what? I just can't deal with you anymore. Stupid fucking things like this.. I mean, seriously?"
"Then go. Go to your lab and hide away like you always do."
The man stormed off, feet thudding hard against the planks as his lab door swings shut behind him. Natasha slides on her leather jacket and her boots, slamming doors as well.
It was either this, or get a divorce and be happy. Find some peace. But Natasha couldn't afford happiness. So she tolerated it.
But at what cost?
She slowly comes back to the present, the spark fading back into her eyes. Her eyes flutter, processing where she is.
"So." You say, cutting the silence with a knife.
"So," Natasha echoes, tongue clicking as she leans in. She's visibly trying to recover from the flashback, piecing herself back together.
"Tell me about the face in front of me. I've said enough about myself."
And all it took were those words to start you off. The air between you changes dramatically.
You talk, and talk, and talk some more— the phrases spilling out of you. You'd trigger yourself, remembering a memory that had to be said that instant and then carry on. At this point, you just ramble on. Your posher, articulate accent shines within the one-sided conversation. It slips out on certain words, which makes Natasha inaudibly chuckle.
Surprisingly, she doesn't seem to mind it one bit. The red-haired woman looks at you with intent and a glint of adoration as the words come tumbling out. And she listens to every single bit. Resting her chin on her fist, her gaze never wavers.
Behind those green eyes—you swear you can see something more simmering beneath the surface. Nothing like when Natasha was mentioning her husband. Not the blankness on her face, nor the cold figure of resentment in her pupils. Rather, a softness not expected from someone who comes off as tough.
You've never been looked at like this, and you don't know how to feel about it. Stared at like your every word is being absorbed into the other person's mind. Like Natasha's trying to understand you, not just listen on mindlessly.
And then her southern dialect seeps back into your heart, stopping you in your tracks.
"Hey— you into Pilates? You seem like the type."
You stiffen. "Pilates?" The incredulous tone is evident in your voice.
"Caroline hosts it on Tuesdays at her house." She cracks her fingers, eyes drifting down to the clacks before meeting your face.
"It's surprisingly good. You should come by." She smirks, looking at your outfit up and down.
"Yeah," you breathe. "I'll.. think about it. Yep. Pilates."
"Good." She hums in contentment, back straightening. "See you on Tuesday then?"
"Mhm. Tuesday." Your hand unconsciously reaches up to your hair out of restlessness. Natasha notices. She stares at your threading fingers that twist away at a strand, and then her eyes snap back up to yours.
The eye contact is different. A good different. You don't feel the urge to scramble away from her blatant stare, or sink in discomfort— nor dwell in a pit of awkwardness. It feels.. okay. Safe. Solace when it shouldn't be.
Amidst the okay and the safe bubbles other emotions: doubt. A grating feeling that doesn't seem to stop chewing at you. A weight on your chest, heavy— immovable.
The bell chiming softly snaps you out of whatever trance you were knee-deep in, and Natasha stands up fully, fingers drumming on the wood.
"Catch you later?" She jerks her head to the side, and before you can answer, she suddenly becomes occupied with a customer. Standing there and feeling out of place for a minute, you start to move.
You step out onto the stone path laid by her doorstep. A breath you hadn't realised you needed to exhale was let out. You swipe the stray hairs away from your face. Instead of moving back to the farm, you walk to the lake.
Lilypads float gently, carrying with them the weight of beautiful, champagne-pink lotus flowers. They drift with the gusts of air. Frogs and their calls are the only audible sounds in such a peaceful place.
It's a spacious chunk of land, surrounded by trees and small flowers blooming here and there. The soft hues blend together to create a divine kaleidoscope. Almost an escape from reality, you think. A comfort spot. You could get used to this view.
You sit down on the edge, watching the water ripple and sway as time passes. You sit on the edge with your thoughts to your left, right by your side.
The grating starts up again, gnawing at your being. It's always been there, even since you were little and didn't understand simple concepts. However, this was different. You understood it, embodied it.
Going to church with your mum and kneeling in front of the cross felt wrong. Like if there was a divine force up there, it could see into the depths of your soul. Prod around at everything you've built up defences around and ridicule you for it. Shame you for the one thing you hadn't told even the four walls of your room.
Reciting the prayers, all you felt was sin. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Disgust in yourself for not dousing it in holy water before it was irreversible. Because holy water would've made it all better, would've made the feelings go away, and the boy with her long, auburn hair.
It felt like a puppeteer pulling the strings of your very being, telling you what to feel, what not. What to say and what to keep quiet.
What to be and what not to be.
Even your whispered wishes to the stars never solved it. It didn't solve the pure hatred you had looking at girls stripping down in the changing rooms. Walking into rooms, the circus of dread started up— its endless mockery and taunts of something that was so distinctly you.
There was never a name for it, but it was branded into your skin as if it belonged there. Followed you around like a spirit, wishing nothing but doom upon you.
But did it ever really belong? You saw, you understood, you know. You know who you are, why you are; what it makes you. So why do those thoughts plague your mind and silently kill you from the inside?
You try to shake it off, intently staring at a certain fish swimming under the water to distract yourself. It didn't do much. But it did enough for you to stop thinking about it.
Now, you just sit there and.. let time pass.
You watch the sun leave you behind and the moon replace it. The light from the sky shines down on the water, creating an ethereal glow. Blanketing the moon is a masterpiece of indigos and charcoals, with stars dotted around.
The beautiful view makes you think.
As much as the moon tries to shine like the sun, it'll never be the sun; or anything like it at all.
Because all the moon does is shadow the sun from everyone at night.
Tuesday rolled around fast enough— and before you know it, you're in Caroline's living room with all the other females. Doing Pilates.
To be honest, you agreed. Even though you'd never done it before.
You roll a spare mat onto the floor and flatten it down before sitting atop it. The dress code— apparently there was a dress code for Pilates now— was "casual." So, naturally, you wore sports attire: a black, form-fitting tank top paired with white sweatpants.
The first pose was the "bird-dog." Whatever that was. You watched Caroline get into position entirely and took a deep breath before attempting it yourself.
It was a shit excuse for a pose. Your form was wonky, your arms not stretched, and if you held it any longer, you'd collapse face flat on the rubber foam. Looking around at everyone else's perfect posture, you winced in embarrassment.
Natasha peers sideways over you and lets out a snort.
"You need some help there, sweetheart?" She condescends with a wicked smile on her face.
The words are practically spat out of your mouth, teeth grinding together. "Help would be nice, actually."
The red-headed woman walks over to you, hips swaying in a dizzying pattern. That same red flannel drapes over her torso, layered with a gray undershirt and brown work trousers. Her eyelashes slightly bat at you as she gets closer, the sound of her steps inaudible.
She stops and kneels beside you. And then you feel her hands on you, scaling your body.
You stiffen with her wandering touch, a rosy pink coming down hard on your cheeks. One of her hands rests on your inner thigh, holding your leg up; the other has your chin tilted up. You can feel the warmth of her skin oozing through the thin layers of your clothes, and the flush only gets worse.
"Just like that," she murmurs. "Keep there."
Burning. A scalding burn blazes under your skin, all over your body in every crevice. It tugs at you, feeling right in all the wrong ways. She's married with children, you tell yourself, the words chanting like a mantra. She wouldn't touch someone else like this knowingly. And especially not another woman. Never another woman, not in a small town like this.
She smells like cedarwood and bergamot. She feels like an autumn morning, unintentionally perfect. You can feel her flyaway hairs against you, courageous red hair pinned down with a hair tie.
And then her hand starts to move. In a comforting gesture, probably. Caressing that spot in the innermost part of your thigh, moving up and down. Up and down. Slow rubs against your sweats that send sparks flying, shooting up into your abdomen and pooling.
It's nothing. It's casual. It feels like everything but casual. Her murmured words do nothing to help the situation, making the fire in you ignite brighter. You suck in a breath, tongue going down to wet your bottom lip— and you find yourself grateful she can't see your face.
"Stay there a little longer," Natasha whispers. "Just for me, sweet.."
Only for her. Your bottom lip trembled with her words, and you find yourself slowly losing your mind. The infectious thoughts claw at the back of your mind— but her touch overpowers any negativity.
Moving her hand from your chin, it slides down your arm, fingers slithering around your bare skin. Her hand stops at your wrist and holds it up properly. You can feel the rough calluses of her fingerpads, the harshness from manual labour holding your otherwise supple skin. Like it was precious, as if you were something fragile.
You feel her fingertips draw circles into your pulse with care. A kind of care nobody's shown you so far. And to make everything all worse, she meets your eyes.
The emeralds she possesses shine with a fierceness that can only be described as a sort of desire. Desire that shouldn't be sought out or pursued. The type that feels unlawful. Her pupils grow with every second spent looking into your eyes, trying to see inside you. To see the you behind the act, exposed and unknown to most.
The thought of being seen as precious goes straight down to your abdomen yet again, a weird warmth boiling. The effect a singular woman has on you is deafening, has you insane and undone.
It shouldn't be that way. It shouldn't cross your mind, yet here it is, a guest at the tourist hotspot of your head.
Caroline's voice snaps you both back into the room. "Great job, everybody! Next pose.."
You watch everybody get up into a new position— the scissors. Looked easy enough. Natasha moves so you can get into the pose. She watches you with a smirk, eyes dancing along your body and lingering on your tight shirt.
You did the right pose, but this time, your back was way off. Maybe on purpose. Your eyes meet Natasha's, and you feign struggle.
"So you just can't do Pilates, then." She huffs in amusement and steps between your legs, crouching slightly. Natasha pushes your left leg towards your face, eyes never leaving you.
"Guess you'll just have to help me. Every single time." You hum back.
Her murmur is almost inaudible. "Wouldn't mind that.." The flush on your cheeks goes hotter, the rosy pink turning into a deeper scarlet.
Natasha's knee is practically between your legs now as she puts that straining pain on you.
"Keep hold." She mutters, and the tension between you is palpable.
A packed silence flickers between you two, and it persists for longer than you'd like. Natasha's stares do nothing to stop the butterflies floating around.
After Pilates that day, you went about your day with another thought to gnaw on.
A redheaded carpenter.
Over the course of the past few weeks have been days of happiness. More happiness than you felt slaving away at that office job. You talked to everyone and made worthwhile friendships. Plus one confusing mess of feelings directed towards a certain red-haired woman.
It got so bad to the point where you intentionally broke parts of your buildings just so you could gape at Natasha cracking down at work, the way her muscles flex and strain holding heavy logs, or when she discards her flannel— showing off that figure you can't seem to look away from.
You're currently at Emily's house, trying on dresses. The whole town was having a party down at the saloon, so naturally, you wanted to dress up nicely.
Sitting at a vanity, the soft feel of makeup-brush bristles glazes over your skin, plastering deep hues of red over your cheeks. Powder dusts over your youthful skin, leaving a shimmering cloud. It flurries into the air before clearing up. You grab the tube of mascara and glide the wand over your eyelashes, making them longer.
With each product, you look more and more kept-together, prettier. A swipe of lipgloss and a smack of your lips, you admire yourself in the lit-up mirror.
You have on a satin, square-necked dress in navy blue, the fabric clinging impossibly to your sides. The hem sits comfortably at mid-thigh length, accentuating your legs. Black stilettos add a few inches to your height, and jewelry is dotted around your skin— around your wrist, your fingers, ears, your neck. Your hair is curled at it's edges, giving it more volume.
You stand and look at yourself one more time, smiling to yourself when a voice rips you out of your daze.
"We're gonna be late— come on..!" It's Emily's bubbly tone that rings out from behind the door.
When you emerge from the room, she gasps in adoration. "Oh, you're beautiful."
"Let's get out of here." You say, the corners of your lips pulled up wide.
The walk to the saloon was no trouble, but tugging the door open, you're introduced to a whole new world.
Polished wooden floorboards stretch across the room, catching the soft glow of lanterns resting on small circular tables. A long-winding, pristine bar dominates the main area, neatly lined with red-cushioned stools that await lively people after a long day of work.
Behind the counter, shelves gleam with a colorful assortment of spirits and glassware, flanked by a vintage jukebox in the corner, ready to spin through songs all night long.
Deep in the heart of the tavern, a brick fireplace cradles a steady warmth, its crackles soft in the otherwise rowdy room. It's situated next to a large, hand-carved wooden bear statue that guards the seating booths.
To the right, a wide archway reveals the lively arcade room. There, a green felt pool table sits beneath the arcade sign, positioned near glowing game cabinets and a vending machine, offering all the drinks and snacks needed for a good time.
Your eyes surface the room, looking around. And then, they stop on Natasha. Dressed in a white, button-up shirt and a rare pair of jeans without dirt marks on them. She made an effort. Their stares remained interlocked, neither of them making a move to look away.
But this time, gone is the usual lightness in her eyes when she peers at you. There's a heaviness there instead. No flirty gaze, no teasing looks. Strictly friendly, whatever that entailed.
Because standing beside Natasha was her husband.
Demetrius— the valley's scientist— dressed casually with his arm looped through Natasha's. His other hand nursed a beer, taking hearty sips from the rim. Her face was different, more uptight and reserved.
The saloon is full of life, the low hum of conversation with clinking glasses and bursts of laughter all hit your ears at once. It smells like cheap beer and leather fused together, with a hint of whiskey. Gus is stationed at the tap, refilling everyone's drinks and catering to the valley.
You join the celebration, glass raising and the sharp burn of gulping down alcohol hits the back of your throat harshly. You saunter over to the pool table, and give in to a game.
You lean over the table, stick in hand as everyone watches on with suspense. Positioning your fingers, the wood slides against your fingers before sending the cue ball across the green slate, hitting the winning pocket. You exclaim in loud, unhinged victory— your arms outstretched. Cheer arises that's just as fierce, aggressive pats to your back as you smirk at your opponent.
"I won," you jeer at them, pointing an accusing finger at them. "I am the best at pool in the whole town—" Your loose giggles fill the space as all eyes are on you.
Every set of eyes. Especially Natasha's.
She's been watching you all night, your drawn frown when you missed a pocket, your expression slowly unbundling with every sip of alcohol. You never got drunk, thankfully. Just.. loosened up. More free.
And Demetrius has been by her side all night, like a hovering parent. Natasha's irritation is evident on her face, so you decide to go rescue her. Surfing the crowd, you finally reach the pair.
"Hey," you say, out of breath. "Having fun?" You probe, looking between husband and wife.
"Yeah." Demetrius cuts in. "We like things like this. Right, Nat?" He shakes their looped arms, looking at the woman with anticipation.
"Mhm," she says noncommittally. "Favourite part of this lifestyle." Natasha's tone is flat, bored. Not containing the usual lilt or playfulness when she's with you.
You cringe and decide to intervene. "Nat, wanna get a drink?" You gesture with your head to two empty stools by the bar, and her expression changes.
"Sure." The light in her eyes is restored, brighter than ever. "Lead the way." Her arm leaves Demetrius' as she follows you down to the counter.
You hop on the stool, Natasha following suit. She beckons Gus to come over with a hand motion. "Two whiskeys." She holds up two fingers and her undivided attention shifts to you now.
"This is nice." You suddenly declare. "The celebrations, the community.."
"The city isn't like this?" Natasha probes, the question in her eyes. You shake your head in response.
"Nope. It's— actually kinda nice here."
Two glasses of bourbon hit the counter in front of you two, and Gus gives you a nod before tending to other people. She takes the glass closest to her with tentative hands, raising it in a silent gesture. You do the same, the rims clinking together.
"Cheers." Natasha tips her head back, and the liquid goes smoothly down her throat. You drink half of it, setting your glass down on the wood.
"Sometimes it gets too much around here." Your eyes dart to the face behind the accent. "But I wouldn't change it for the world. Not a single thing."
A quiet overcomes you for a short moment, before your lips open.
"I used to work in an office." Natasha lets out an abrupt laugh at your words, shoulders shaking.
"No way," she gasps incredulously. "You? In an office? I don't see that, sweetheart."
"Yep." You click your tongue. "A miserable 9-to-5 in a shitty cubicle for a workspace. I only did it for the money."
Natasha grimaces with a smile. "Sounds horrible." She swirls the contents of her glass idly, the whiskey sloshing around. The taller woman still tries to wear her chuckles off, but fails.
"But when I came here, I felt better. Like I wanted to be here." Your eyes meet again, and there's something more there. The ghost of realisation. A look of admiration your way.
You know exactly why you want to stay here, the answer rooted in your head. She's looking right back at you.
You clear your throat and stand up, changing the subject. "Let's dance."
Natasha blinks. "You want to dance. With me."
"Come on, don't tell me you're horrible at it—" At your teasing words, Natasha immediately leaves the stool, standing over you.
"Horrible my ass." She mumbles with a smirk before walking to the dance floor, expecting you to follow. Your heels clack against reinforced planks until they reach the area where the jukebox is.
A small crowd forms, and you fit right in with Natasha. Your bodies move like fluid, swaying with the tempo of the music. It's some brassy cornet solo with a deep, male timbre singing along to the melody.
You feel Natasha's body brush against yours now and then, and jolts charge through your body like electricity. Both of you get lost in the moment, giggling and carefree at each other's dancing moves.
And then the song gets slower, more intimate. You feel Natasha's frame against your back, her soft body moving against yours. Any watchers would brush it off as friendly— it was everything but friendly. Tingles spread across you the longer she was there, her presence making you lightheaded.
"You wanna leave to go somewhere quieter?" Natasha murmurs against your ear, her breath tickling your skin.
"Quiet sounds nice," You hum. "Why not?"
When her hand embraces yours, a warmth fills you from head to toe. She leads you through the people, and pushes the door open with her elbow.
The cold wind of eleven at night hits your face and you flinch like you've been slapped. But the feeling is momentary as you gape at the lit-up town. Old lampposts cast long, shaky shadows against the cobblestone. Windows filter in a golden light, illuminating like scattered jewels. Idle smoke from chimneys swirls up in the air, creating pretty paths before disappearing without a trace.
You shiver involuntarily, your body overcoming you in spasms. Natasha notices; of course she'd notice.
Slipping off her leather jacket, she drapes it around your shoulders, coating you in her warmth. You sigh in relief, wrapping the material tighter around you. Her jacket still smells like freshly cut wood— a scent you've secretly come to love. You subtly inhale her odor, feeling the warmth crawl everywhere and the fluttering kickstarting.
Natasha takes a moment to just stare into your eyes and come to terms with herself. She looks down at your intertwined hands and squeezes gently, calling your name out.
"Look at me." She jerks your chin to face her. Your short-lived bewilderment morphs into a sweet smile.
"What is it, Nat—?"
Before you can even react, you feel lips holding yours captive. Your eyes widen and you stand frozen in shock, watching the centerpiece of every dream you've had kiss you with such an intensity it makes you dizzy.
And then you kiss back just as hard.
Pent-up feelings and unspoken tension thrive in the small space between you as she ushers you to the worn wall of the saloon. Your back hits the bricks as you try to keep up with Natasha, tongues moving like synchronised swimmers. The weight of a million words is dumped on the tip of your tongue. I like this. I like you.
Keep going and don't stop.
But your prayers are disregarded as the sound of rowdy voices from the saloon makes Natasha pull away from you like touching a hot stove. She puts a few feet of distance between you, and you're left dazed, hurt. Confused.
Your lips part and she speaks before you can. "Not here." Natasha shifts her weight from one foot to the other. "It's too risky and if someone had walked through that door—" She almost looked mad at herself for letting it get this far.
"My cabin," you mutter, interrupting the taller woman's spiraling. "Nobody’s gonna come there, Nat. We'll have all the privacy we need."
Natasha grabs your wrist and the two of you dart. Two women, tangled in a complicated mess, picking themselves rather than any possible variable. Two women, one stumbling over her heels, the other tugging her by the arm. Their footsteps echo in the quiet of midnight, thuds against dirt and stone loud.
She runs with purpose, moving like the world's going to end if she doesn't get more of your taste. Natasha knows the way to your farm off by heart now— could even get there blindfolded if she had to. Her flannel swishes with the breeze as you try to catch up with Natasha, hair blowing violently.
As soon as your cabin door slams shuts behind you, lips are on yours. Desperate. Needy. Natasha's soft, pillowy lips touch yours and for a second, your breath hitches and you forget how to function.
"Nat—" you gasp.
"Shh. I need this. Need this so bad.." She murmurs and doesn't give you time to respond before she's back to heated kissing, hand coming up to cradle your head. You moan in her mouth and lean in, giving as much passion back.
The two of you kiss like there's no tomorrow. Kissing like you'll run out of time before it's too late. Her fingers map you everywhere, callused hands hard at work memorising your feel. Squeezing your hips, she lets you breathe before descending on your neck.
"Been thinking 'bout you. All the damn time."
Messy, sloppy kisses on your jawline, the column of your neck, your collarbone. Your head lolls back against the oak as she takes your skin for herself. Piercing bites make you whine out in pleasure, sure to leave their mark for the coming hours. Your fingers, out of instinct, run up to her hair, weaving through the auburn strands.
They're not short and cropped like the other people you've kissed. Her hair is long and gorgeous, the last glint of sunlight before cold days. Your hand almost fits perfectly, as if it were meant to be there.
Not a rougher, masculine hand. But a feminine, softer one. Running through feminine hair.
You feel her fingers crawl up your dress and you forget how to breathe. Hand slipping past the waistband of your underwear, her fingertips tease you; and you let out an embarrassing whimper.
"Look at that," she smirks. "Already? 'Haven't even started, sweetie."
Natasha's fingers tease your slit, rubbing up and down, making your back arch off the door. A press to your clit has you gasp, grinding up into her hand.
"I like it when you wear the sundresses. They're cute little things. Think about taking them off you now and then."
Your whine in response makes the red-head chuckle. "What, you like the idea of me going fucking insane over your dainty little clothes?" That southern lilt does absolutely nothing for you, making your face even redder.
Who knew that kisses to your neck and teases to your clit were your ultimate demise? And then, her fingers plunge into you before you can react— stopping the teasing. You gasp, eyes rolling back in a moan.
"Oh, oh gosh, Nat.."
Your hands claw at the wood, making crescent-shaped indents. Natasha will fix that later. You knew her hands were divine, but her fingers inside of you? That was a whole new level of pleasure. Feeling her rough hand move in and out of you with her mouth all over you— This was bliss. Pure, unfiltered bliss she's giving you.
"You're tight, sweetie." Natasha drawls with a smirk. Her biceps flex as she does your pussy, the muscle straining slightly. Both of you are covered in a sheen of sweat, the air smelling like forbidden acts.
"Squeezing my fingers so well, hmmh?" You press your lips together in an attempt to compose yourself, even when her words unravel you with each syllable.
"Mhm," you whine, practically trying to merge your pussy with her hand. Even words were a feat, being fingered in all the right ways.
Somewhere tangled up in the arousal, another finger joined in. The wet sound that reverberates around the room is obscene, dirty almost. Natasha's fingers work you like a dream, hitting the sweet spots whilst knuckles-deep inside you.
"Was thinking about my jacket on you all night, sweetie."
That mouth? Those lips worshipped you like no other. You were a shrine and she was an eager devotee, hypnotized by the sheer sight of your body. And Natasha just can't seem to get enough.
You don't think you've ever been so needy in your life.
Your body tenses as she touches that beautiful, beautiful spongy layer inside of you, hitting the jackpot with those sweet spots.
"Wanna— wanna come.." You say desperately, feeling your vision start to claw white at the edges.
"Mmm-mm," she tsks. "Not wasting your orgasm on my fingers, baby." You feel her curl inside you and let out a high-pitched groan.
Panting heavily, you look at her and swallow. "Nat, we can't— You're married. You have children."
Her assault on your neck stops, and she's frozen for a few seconds. You whine with urgency when her fingers leave you, the air shifting.
As her hands comes up to cup your face, Natasha's thumbs graze your cheeks. In the jade crystals of her eyes, that same unspokenness clings on. Those same conflicting feelings you've had to carry the burden of for as long as you can remember.
"Just.. let me have this," she whispers, forehead touching yours. "Let us have this." She pulls away slightly, her hand coming to entwine yours. She squeezes gently, eyes never leaving yours.
"Your bedroom?" She raises an eyebrow.
"To the left. Down the hall, at the end.." you breathe, and all of a sudden, a hand tugs you around your own space. Your heels and her boots thud together as Natasha basically drags you to your room.
When the door shuts behind the two of you, you see pale fingers slide up the spruce to twist the lock. Green eyes befall you again, and plush lips envelope yours. This time, you're backed up to the foot of the bed. Natasha's hands grab your waist and push you, sitting you down.
"This is wrong," you gasp for air, voice cracking. "So fucking wrong.."
"Then let's be wrong together." Natasha declares, a rasp in her tone. "I'd always be wrong that way."
You can hear the displeased audience in your head jeer at your actions, the numbing feeling getting worse. Your body drowns in doubt, in self-consciousness. You shove it back down, focusing on the alluring woman in front of you.
Tilting your chin up, she starts at your jaw this time, kissing down to the square neck of your dress. Littering marks, she makes sure to be careful, sucking on easily hidden spaces.
And then, Natasha pauses. "You okay, sweetheart? Too much?"
"Not enough." You grit out, and that was all the confirmation she needed.
As she goes down on your body, Natasha slowly goes into a kneeling position. Peppered kisses are everywhere all at once. The redhead pauses at the valley of your breasts, letting out a guttural moan. A hand comes up to cup one of them, groping the flesh.
"Oh, god.. You're so—" Her thumb comes up to your nipple. Squeezing it gently and stroking the nub, you whine, leaning your head forward.
"These are so fucking perfect, baby. You don't even know." Her fingers alternate between massaging the skin and teasing your hardening nipples. When her hot mouth grazes you, that's when you whimper loudly.
Knees buckling, you watch her work with such precision, pushing to see what your weaknesses are, what makes you groan louder.
"I have to stop myself from staring at them, you know." Her eyes are ravenous as she licks eagerly. "When I'm alone, I get off to them like a needy bitch." She spits the words out like they're poison. A groan joins the heated air between you as she feels you up.
"I love these. Fucking hell.." She bites her lip as she takes a moment to look at your breasts. Her tongue swipes over her lips before reluctantly moving on, kissing a trail down you.
Finally, on her knees, her hands crawl up your legs, her touch provoking tingles. They stop at the hem of your dress— and Natasha looks up at you for confirmation.
"Can I..?" She looks at you with pleading eyes, hands rubbing up and down your thighs, planting a peck on your inner thigh.
"Yeah," you nod eagerly. "Please—"
But before she continues, her hands move down to your heels, unclasping the buckle gently and peeling off each of your stilettos before discarding them carelessly. A small, caring act amongst the shared desire.
A shit-eating grin bestows upon Natasha's mouth, and the navy edge rides up until your lower half is exposed to her. Her fingers hook in your underwear and slip them off, joining the disoriented shoes.
She pats your thigh. "Lift your legs up onto my shoulders." You obey, and the weight of your flesh goes onto Natasha.
"Attagirl." The murmur from her is all you hear before she dives in between your legs, and a satisfied moan leaves you. Fingers draw back to her head like a magnet, combing Natasha's hair.
"Tell me if it gets too bad, baby."
Her hands come to grab as much of your thighs as she can muster, and her tongue works miracles on you— turning you into a whiny, whimpering mess. This is nothing like her fingers. This is better. The hairs on your skin stand up; a mountain of pleasure building in your abdomen.
Your eyes look up, and you wish they had never looked up.
The cross your mother insisted you have mounted somewhere in your cabin, so you just threw it up on one of your bedroom walls and left it there. And suddenly the blush drains from your face, leaving an uncomfortable, pasty white hue.
The nausea arrives in savage waves, not giving you time to process anything.
The woman you've been thinking about every waking second for the past weeks is finally right where you dreamt she'd be— yet, you're so.. odd. Out of place. Like this shouldn't go the way that it is.
You can feel the frowns and glares of everyone back home. All their faces hovering above you, whispering the words of God into your ears. No child of sin is a child of Jesus Christ.
It doesn't feel like a sin. It feels majestic, feels right in every sense possible. It shouldn't be that way.
Her tongue feels heavenly on you. But every second that you stare at the cross watching over your every move, the bile threatens to rise up your throat.
You're going against everything you were taught. Everything that shows the warning signs of sin. Sin. You need to repent, you have to cure yourself as soon as possible, cure yourself before it spreads too much—
But what if nothing's the cure? What if she's the cure? Her flames for hair, her low waisted jeans, his her lumberjack boots jammed with dirt and wood shavings.
Natasha's voice, low and soft, snaps you out of it. "You okay, sweetheart? Want me to keep going—?"
"Yes." you say impulsively. "Just.. carry on. Please."
Her hand pats your thigh as she goes back to giving you just what you need. Natasha starts a steady deep rhythm. She smiles and smirks at your reactions. You cry out and grab her hair behind you, pushing her face deeper into you.
"You're doing so well, baby—" Her words vibrate against you and all that comes out of your mouth are needy noises. "So good.."
You feel Natasha moan in you, switching between sucking your clit and reaching her tongue into unexplored places.
"Nat.. Nat, oh— please.. Please." You're thrusting in her face now, not caring how needy you look. You throw your head back, forcing your gaze to leave the cross as you go against it.
Your skin burns. Not from the thoughts or the doubt. From love.
The obscene, slick sound of Natasha's mouth and the slight squeak of the bed, your moans, her heavy breathing— they all echo off the walls as you live your recurring dreams.
"You're close. Can feel you." Her nose hits your pelvic bone with every grind up into her tongue, and your toes curl at Natasha's occasional groan. Her pace is relentless on your folds, not stopping, not going any slower.
Your limbs begin to fail you, and the punishing rhythm she set breaks as you begin to mindlessly babble. At this point, you're riding her mouth, and Natasha doesn't seem to complain; quite the opposite.
"Ah.. God, it's— it's so good. So good, so.." You mewl, your body starting to slump slightly at her pace. Your thighs clench together around her head as you beg for release.
"Just look at the state of you, sweetie," she teases in a certain tone. That tone. "You wanna come on my mouth?"
You moan loudly at her words, legs trembling, and your grip on her hair getting tighter. You tug your head impossibly closer to you, trying to merge your bodies.
"Mhm," you cry. "Let me.. let me come." The spring in your stomach gets tighter and tighter, as your eyes roll back in never-ending arousal.
And then Natasha's tongue goes deeper than ever before. Hot-white floods your vision, your jaw going slack. A scream rips out of your throat as you basically choke the redhead with your thighs, cupping her head and grinding erratically. You squirt on her mouth, coating her lips and tongue with slick— which she takes with no problem.
She fucks you with her tongue through it, until you come down from the release. Fatigue strikes your body in the form of pants and trembles, chest heaving irregularly.
Natasha wipes the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand as she rises from the floor to kiss you intensely, her mouth tasting like a hint of salt.
"Taste yourself on me," she coos. "That's all you, sweetheart." Her tone is noticeably softer as she pulls away, cupping your face.
"You did so good for me, hmm?" You nod obediently, thighs still trembling. Natasha frowns, looking down at your shaking figure. She sits down by you, the mattress sinking with your shared weight.
And then, arms wrap around you, lifting you up into her lap. Her face comes to press against your hair, and you feel all of her against your back. You're now skin to skin, sweat clinging together.
"You hurting anywhere?" She murmurs, muffled by you.
You shake your head. "Nope," you chirp. "I'm fine." You melt back into her torso, letting yourself go limp in her embrace.
Natasha sees the cross on the wall, and her face hardens. She intentionally shields your gaze from it— hiding your face in her chest. Her hand rests on your arm, stroking gentle circles on the smooth flesh.
The silence between you two is comfortable, welcoming. Not overbearing or awkward. The smell of sex and sweat floating around the room makes you cringe internally, wincing. Natasha presses a kiss to your temple now and then, humming against your skin.
Your mind begins to wander. Wander back to the divine force watching over you. But this time, the nausea doesn't reach your throat. And the voices don't linger. The gorgeous woman holding you is almost a shield against the inner turmoil within you.
It makes you realise something.
You couldn't care. You don't care anymore.
This is you. You in all your glory. You're not the mocking audience in your head, the conservative girl all those years ago, not the person you wished on every star to become. A relieved feeling washes over you as you relax more in Natasha's strong grip.
So they can all watch from wherever they are as this city girl finally finds herself. Whether it's from up above or down on Earth.
Let them watch.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Better known as MIT. The school you miraculously got accepted into, being welcomed into that incredibly narrow window international students have.
You were always incredibly smart growing up, excelling in every subject. Science, however, was always your forte, your strong suit— specifically physics. You always had a stubborn streak of passion when it came to circuit boards and complex equations.
Never was there an instance where test papers slapped in front of you hadn't displayed that big, beautiful "A+" etched on the front page.
Classmates had always looked up at you on your shiny, tall pedestal with pure, loathing envy. The murmurs would never escape you, only getting louder when you were around to hear them. All those "Does she really have to be so perfect's," and the "Can she catch a break for once's" not passing your ears. Your mother always told you that they only gave their input because they were jealous.
And eventually, you ended up owning it. Owning the status, the titles, the reputation. It didn't make the whispers fade, but it silenced them for a while.
So, when you opened that e-mail on a mundane Wednesday evening, your expression completely shifted. Gasping loudly with teary eyes and beckoning your parents over to see, a response to your application graced your laptop screen:
"We are pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted from the international selection to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the class of 1987. The school year commences on the following 4th of September; and we can't wait to see you then!"
You vividly remember your parents' faces mirroring your own shock, your same glassy eyes as they embraced you so tightly, squeezing the life out of you. Immediately, chatter about your move to America echoed throughout the walls of your house; never-ending pats, slaps, claps of your back and shoulders as your family sang your praises continually.
Packing your bags eagerly, you set off on your flight to the US after promising eleven times to your mum that you'd call her at every stage of your journey. Wheeling your hand luggage behind you and leaving your family behind at the airport's check-in area, the realisation finally sunk in.
That was the moment that everything changed.
You were off to pursue your lifelong dreams at your young age and this is really real.
You sit in the head teacher's office and watch the middle aged man pushing 50 drone on about how this is a school of prestige, and there's a zero tolerance behaviour— you tuned out a while ago.
His office is airy and professional as framed pictures of captured moments hang around the walls. In particular, you notice a very full and very colourful calendar.
The desk in front of you is neat and organised, stacked papers and files tucked to each corner. A photo of him and his wife beaming into the camera sits on top of the mountain of documents. A nameplate sits idle, reading: "Mr Harris" in big letters, "PRINCIPAL" in a smaller font underneath.
Once he's done speaking, you're assigned to a shorter girl for the tour. The principal mentioned something along the lines about her being a "student representative— one of the best in the school." You shrug and just follow her lead.
Exiting the room, you walk down the corridors of MIT and immediately study the environment you'll be in for the next few years.
Lockers adorn the walls, each and every one you spot different from the next; embellished with unique pops of identity. Fluorescent lights harshly shine down on everyone, their glow a constant in the background of multiple busy lives of everyone enrolled. Posters are plastered on the walls, ranging from the Halloween disco to the numerous extra-curricular clubs like robotics and computing.
MIT is different to home, you think.
Your eyes divert to a passing by trophy stand, taking up a large bit of the corridor. The polished, octagonal mahogany holds all kinds of medals, awards and certificates that are encased, protected by the glass. It's shelves on top of shelves of formidable feats that seem almost impossible to the average high schooler.
But nobody's average here at MIT.
"—And that's the trophy stand. Pretty impressive to outsiders, but this is MIT, awards are never that big of a deal anyway. Almost everyone has at least one; these are just the bigger ones.."
Another observation you've made is your tour guide; an overly chatty and irritating student representative, who doesn't know when to shut up. So much for being "the best in the school."
Looking a little closer, you see a continously repeated name across the plaques and honours.
Anthony Stark.
The guy's name basically carries the trophy stand, most of the achievements under his name. Your eyebrows are then raised in shock. This is actually Tony Stark. Son of Howard Stark, the most revolutionary scientist of his time.. You hadn't realised he attended MIT.
As your mind files the new information away, your feet drag across the linoleum floor when you immerse yourself deeper into the building. Surprisingly enough, the people seem friendly enough. They merely seem. Apperances can decieve. It's clear that there's a social hierarchy, like-minded people keeping to their own circles, like cliques in the movies.
It's different here. You can't tell if it's a good or bad different, just.. different. Nothing like back home at all.
You're led down many winding halls, each one showcasing a whole new world of science and technology, leaving you awe-struck at the inclusivity up for show. Your old school couldn't even dream of adding some of the things MIT has.
Peering into lab after lab that serve just about every purpose, your passion can't help but flare up seeing the amount of oppoturnities available in the palm of your hand.
After a while, your legs possess a dull ache from scaling such a massive school, and when your tour guide announces that you're at your last stop— you sigh a little too loudly in relief.
Before you is a massive canteen, long lunch tables stretch from one end of the room to the other. Students sit scattered around, eating from trays of food that slowly empty, others with textbooks and revision guides before them.
"This is the cafeteria. Pretty self explanatory, you kinda just come here mainly to eat. Or study, or even chill. Oh, and for the record? The food here is amazing. Out of this world, honestly.." You pinch the bridge of your nose at her endless rambling.
The shrill sound of the bell ringing snaps her out of her spiralling and she says something actually useful for once.
"Hey, can I see your timetable? You're obviously not gonna know where anything is— and I can walk you to your class? Like, right now?"
You blink in surprise before processing her words.
"Yeah. Yeah, my timetable.." You set your bag down on a nearby table, fishing the piece of paper out that you were given earlier. You pull it out and hand it to her. She pauses, and analyses your schedule.
"Oh. You have Electrical Engineering." She looks you up and down, seemingly judgemental. "That room's on the way to my next period. Perfect."
She hands the paper back to you as you tuck it away, this time folded up in your pocket. The two of you stand awkwardly for a second before she starts to move and you follow behind, trying to keep up.
After walking for what feels like an eternity, she suddenly halts at a classroom with a nameplate that reads: "ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING— #616." The student turns to you, her eyes looking over you once more.
"Here you are. Electrical Engineering. Good luck—" She pats your shoulder before scurrying off down the hallway. Weird.
You walk into the classroom, lingering clumsily at the doorway. The vast room looks like something out of your dreams; all the equipment a engineer could wish for, lined up to one side of the room. The smell of ozone and toxic chemicals floods your nostrils, leaving you wrinkling your nose slightly. Chatter, flipping of pages and the sound of pencils scratching paper all fuse into one big sound.
The teacher finally seems to acknowledge your presence and looks a little sheepish at missing you out. He strolls over to where you're stood.
"You're the new student, right?" He probes, and says your name for clarification. You nod along. At your confirmation, his attention diverts to the particularly male-dominant class.
"Can I have your attention, please?" His voice cuts through conversations, and the classroom quickly becomes devoid of all sound. Every pair of younger eyes are now fixated on their professor. He nods at everyone's obedience and gestures to you.
"We have a new student joining us." At the mention of your presence, you take a few cautious steps into the room, stopping to stand front and centre. The collective attention is towards you now, like the spotlight's shone down on you out of nowhere.
You're currently wearing an oversized, off the shoulder graphic tee along with baggy, low-rise embroidered jeans and chunky sneakers. On your back sits a Jansport backpack with keychains of your interests. Gold jewellery was dotted around your neck, wrists, ears and you had your fair share of piercings. Your hair was styled in its usual modernised shag with heavy layers and a swooped sidepart. You stand at 5'10, pretty tall for a girl anyway, slightly towering over the teacher.
Making eye contact with everyone, your eyes dart around the space before locking with a specific boy. His lips quip up into a smirk before he drawls.
"Not many girls choose Electrical Engineering to pursue as a subject. As you can clearly see. So, what's your deal, new girl?" His voice comes out smoothly, slightly deep and especially cocky more than anything.
"Well, I actually like Physics. And I want to be an engineer too, if you're just dying to know." You snap back with just as much ferocity, which catches everybody off guard. Nobody's ever spoke back to him like that. And with his own attitude, too..
The boy himself is lost for words for a second before morphing his expression back into that cocky smirk.
"Well, well, well, aren't you the bold type—" He coos at you, making you roll your eyes.
"That's enough from you, Tony." The teacher's authoritative tone barks with an echo, earning a scoff from the boy. Tony. Like the Tony from the trophy stand. And also from the Stark family, too.. You found that one out from a random girl in the corridor whispering about how she got laid by him. "Let her introduce herself." The teacher looks back at you expectantly.
You clear your throat and begin to speak. Your introduction is brief, snappy, short. When you're done, you look at the professor for guidance.
"Thank you for that. I anticipate you'll be a good asset to the class. Right.." The older man has a contemplative expression, scanning the room for empty spots; there only being one left.
"You can sit by Tony. The boy who was talking to you just?" He waves a hand in Tony's direction and you see the boy straighten up. You want to resist, but end up complying and taking the seat by him.
He dons a white, button-up shirt with the top button undone. Loose, vintage, stone washed jeans lay low on his waistline, paired with red Converse. A black, leather, bomber jacket sits snug around his body. He's surprisingly short, you being slightly taller than him even when sat down. His aura excudes painfully loud egotism— you can tell he treats girls like pawns.
The professor drones on about advanced circuit boards, which equates to the alphabet in terms of difficulty level for you. The both of you are amazingly out of it for being so smart, each in your own little worlds. There's complete radio silence between you and Tony before he speaks up:
"You British?" He murmurs suddenly, and you blink, processing it.
"My dad is." You swallow. "My accent comes from him. Why?"
"It's a pretty accent. Just saying—" You exhale deeply at his comment in annoyance, seeing right through the whole flirting act. Definitely a playboy..
"Are you seriously trying to impress someone you've known for no more than two minutes?" You groan internally.
"It seems to be working on you quite well, might I add." He says with a teasing lilt and it grates at your nerves.
"Do you do this with every single girl you come across?" You hiss back.
"Maybe." He shrugs nonchalantly and speaks in a lower tone for his next words.
"What can I say? Girls like my charm." You shudder in disgust and shift your chair away. He chuckles in response. You didn't travel 9 hours and drop your family across the globe to study at a prestigious school— just to put up with some boy's bullshit..
And even then; he's not just some boy. He's fucking Howard Stark's son. A man who's made ground-breaking discoveries in his time.
The teacher takes this opportunity to pick on you, making the assumption that you're not listening. That would be a bad thing to consider as you've only been here for a few hours max; this being your first ever lesson.
As soon as he finishes, though, you immediately spout the answer out without even making eye contact with him.
"—CCT is found using the non-linear Swing Equation, plus the Equal Area Criterion." Tony's head snaps up to you at your unfazed tone, and for once, he's stunned. His expression mirrors the rest of the class too, who have momentarily paused at your quick wit.
For Tony, however, it quickly contorts into a shit-eating grin. The two of you then make intense eye contact, both relaying the same thoughts.
There's someone else here who's actually on my wavelength. And I won't let them win over me, not in a million years.
And when you left the classroom that day, your new, famed and rare reputation was set into stone almost immediately by word of mouth.
Tony Stark's competition.
You quickly find that your time at MIT turns into one you love wholeheartedly. With your personality, you fit right in like a jigsaw piece to a puzzle. You have a small circle of friends you hold dear to your heart, and it seems like the perfect school life for now.
Perfect until you mention Tony's name.
Ever since that first lesson, the two of you have been in an unspoken conflict. And you just oh, so convienently had to major in his exact same subjects; so you're seeing him bascially all the time. Both of you constantly butt heads, trying to outdo the other. Lessons with you two are like tennis matches; him answering one question, you being quick enough to answer the next.
In the two years that Tony's attended MIT, he's never had so much rivalry with anyone. Sure, everyone was pretty smart here— but Tony Stark? He's always transcending the game. And it seems that he's not the only one to anymore. It makes his skin crawl and flush at the same time.
You don't realise that he secretly loves the intensity, the thrill of it all. He's never met someone that could challenge him before. You changed that.
He's also never come across anyone who could talk back, who had never-ending answers to his quips. Who also had the same level of humor as him, and can differentiate between his jokes. You also changed that, too.
As you advance down the halls that slowly become part of your daily life, you get reminded of all the moments you and him have shared so far:
When you had made your way down to room 616 one day, and walked to your shared desk, Tony marched up to you. He showed you a test paper, a big, red "99%" written on the front page. He held it up with honour towards your face, with a supposed "I told you so" look.
"Let's see if you can beat me this time." He had a wide smirk, cockiness never failed to deliver. That same smirk immediately dissipated when you held up your whole 100%. Now you're the one that grinned in the situation.
"Oh— you seem to be slacking lately, Stark.." You snarked at him pridefully, adding a mock pout to your words.
"Slacking? Last time I checked, you got lower than me on the past three tests." He retorted.
"Well, I'm not the one currently on a 99%, but we can't all have what we want, can we?" You snapped back with wit.
"I'm Tony Stark. I always get what I want— whenever I want. Sorry, I forget that you don't have such a privilege.." With every comment made, both of you closed the distance between you, the sarcasm only growing. It got to a point where there were mere inches between you, and neither of you wanted to be the one to back down.
"Is the closeness flustering you? Because I'm seeing a little flush on your cheeks. Glad I could be the cause of it—" The eye contact you hold with Tony is intense, heated, fiery in all the wrong ways.
"I could say the same thing. You seem to be stumbling over your words, genius." You tilt your head slightly, which doesn't help the proximity at all.
"Mmm, it's actually genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Who's the genius now?" Your gaze darts to his tongue subtly swiping out to wet his lips. That's when you're aware of just how close the two of you were.
You pull away first when someone calls your name from across the room and his smile gets wider. "I win." He murmurs in arrogant triumph, just so only you hear his words; in which you roll your eyes towards.
Your thoughts submerge into the ice palace of memories you have, and another recollection projects itself to you:
You were flicking through the books on an aisle in the library, remembering about a certain quantum physics work you wanted to use. Eyes squinting, you finally found it, fingers grasping the spine. You smiled to yourself, walking away until someone bumped into you.
Tony. And he had the look of a petulant child.
"Quantum physics, hmm?" He said, with a slight gritting of his teeth.
"Yeah. What's the issue now, Stark?" You replied, raising an eyebrow.
"My issue? You're the issue here. You have the book I need." Tony huffed as if the fact was obvious.
"And it's oh, so convenient that you just have to want the book in my hands." You shot back with sarcasm.
"I don't want it. I need it. And I certainly need it more than you do." His eyebrows rose at your brushing off.
"What makes you think that you need it more than I do, anyway?" You began to get irritated.
"I'm Tony Stark." He argued boastfully, pointing a finger to himself. Whenever he mentioned his name, it 99% of the time meant that he was losing the argument, anyway.
"So what? Who cares— I got it first."
"Yeah, and you wouldn't even understand half of what's in the book anyway.." At his mutter, your eyebrows raise in annoyance.
"Excuse me?" You huff increduously, your mouth slightly open in disbelief.
"Oh, you heard me. And you're excused too." Because of your slight height advantage, he has to slightly tilt his head up to meet your eyes.
"You big headed bitch, it's been how many tests I've beaten you on now—?" You pointed an accusatory finger into his chest.
"Well, someone has to hold all the intelligence. Sorry you can't do that.. It's a Stark thing anyway; you wouldn't know."
"What, is being a midget also a Stark thing?" Tony gasped at your comment in offence.
"Please, it's a few inches. You act like you're superior."
"Well, I'm not the one who's 5'8 at 17. So, maybe I am the superior one after all."
The argument only escalates, hissed words and aggressively pointed fingers shared in the narrow library aisle. It's only when the stern librarian walked past was then that the both of you froze in shock. The whole of MIT knew that the librarian was.. quite the person, indeed.
And oh, was she not happy at all.
She just stood there in harrowing silence, which scared the spirit out of you. Her thundering steps boomed closer to both of you and you swear you saw Tony cower in fear. You'd laugh and mock him— if you were anywhere else right now.
"I don't know what the hell you two are thinking to fight over a book and disrupt the quiet environment of the library." She practically spits the words out.
"There are people in here revising. Actually doing something; and you have to ruin their focus with your little hissy fit." She glanced down at the book hugged to your chest. "Over a quantum physics book.. As if we don't have hundreds of those here—! This is a science school, and you're acting like that's the only book left."
You and Tony both looked sheepish under her scolding.
"And might I remind you, this isn't the first time I've had to stop your petty arguments; it's the second time this week. I've never expected this behaviour, especially from MIT's top students." The librarian sighs in disbelief and carries on for about another good two minutes.
That was the day you both got banned from the library for three weeks for insubordination. Neither of you spoke for the whole three weeks. You're adamant that Tomy still holds that grudge to this day.
A final flash of a memory overcomes you:
You were both in Classical Physics, not even listening to the teacher as she intoned words you already knew off by heart now. Instead, you and Tony were having an incredibly hushed argument.
"..Easy. The biggest failure of Classical Physics is blackbody radiation."
"No. It's the line spectra of atoms. Everyone knows that, Stark—"
"The blackbody spectrum is one of the greatest unsolved questions in physics."
"Oh, yeah? And where's your source for that one?"
"I am the source." He argued feebly, clutching at straws.
"And suddenly, you don't sound so convincing." You hummed, lip twitching upwards at his irritation.
"Shut up. I'm right and you're wrong."
"Me and you both know that I'm correct, Stark." And it was true— you were right on so many levels. More levels than Tony, even. But he wouldn't admit so.
Tony Stark would never admit he's wrong. Ever.
You both waged war with one another, each of you trying to be the most dominant voice in the debate; but ultimately ending up being straight noise pollution instead.
The teacher eventually catches you hissing at each other with pure hatred and stops her train of speech to address you.
She sternly says both of your names. "Your dispute surely can't be interesting enough to not pay attention to my lecture. Stop sneering at one another and focus."
"Bitch," Tony mutters under his breath, aimed towards you.
"Manwhore." You snap back with no remorse, which made him raise an eyebrow in complete shock.
Pulling away from the memories, you stop at the Mechanical Physics room; #838. You walk through the open doorway and take your seat by one of your closest friends. Setting your bag down on the floor, you focus up and listen to the teacher.
When you get set on independent work, your friend takes the time to talk to you in a hushed whisper, calling your name. In response, you tilt your head. "Hmm?"
"Okay, so. There's a party on Saturday and I need a plus one to come with me." You raise an eyebrow. A party?
"Who's party?" You question.
"Don't get mad if I tell you—?" Your friend says tentatively.
You sigh. "Just tell me."
"It's Tony's.."
"Tony's party?" You're immediately opposed to the idea. Why would you, of all people show up to his party?
"Wait; you've gotta hear me out. Tony's parties are the best at MIT. Seriously, you can't miss it—"
"And you want me to go to Tony's party. The guy who I literally hate? He probably hates me just as much, by the way.."
"Please? Everyone else's busy over the weekend. Besides, I really wanna go." You mull over it in your head. You've been to a fair amount of parties in your past school, and you're fun to be around— but going to his? Even that's a stretch for you.
"It'll be nice to have a break. Let loose, have some fun.."
But, looking at your friend's desperate face changes your opinion. I'll do it for her, you think. Her words also get to you, too. You needed a break from studying, anyway; this is almost the perfect opportunity to.
"Fine," you huff out. "But.. I'm only going for you. And the drinks. Not Tony."
"Not for Tony, got it—" A smile breaks out on your friend's expression and she takes both of your hands with a squeal. "Okay, okay.. We need to talk outfits. I mean, we've gotta look good if we're going.." She endlessly rambles about the little things, which makes you also smile.
Though, little do you know, Tony's also smiling from his seat in front of you, having dropped an ear in your conversation the entire time. He wanted you to come.
You assess your look in your vanity mirror, making sure to get every bit whilst dabbing your face with all sorts of makeup products that only enhance your features.
Mascara coats your eyelashes, giving them more attention— whilst your charcoal waterline adds a hint of sultriness to your eyes. Eyeshadow to top your eye makeup lies bold and colourful, a fusion of pink and teal complementing your skin. A subtle shade of pink dusts your cheeks and nose, and your lips remain full, blanketed in a nude pink.
You sharpen your lip pencil before leaning in towards your reflection, and lining your lips with a darker colour with perfect precision. After finishing, you smack your lips together to blend the colours in. Your back hits your chair as you admire yourself in the mirror.
Your state of self-love shatters when you hear your friend's irritated voice sound out your name for the fifth time.
"We're gonna be late— can you hurry up?" You roll your eyes at her agitation and slip earrings in while giving a response.
"Just give me like a second, I promise I'm coming..!" You yell back, fastening the back before moving on to the second earring, walking to your heels. Slipping them on and grabbing your matching purse, you turn the doorknob.
The first thing you hear is your friend's gasp looking at your attire. You have on a red halter necked, mini dress embellished with sequins that stops just at your mid thighs. Tights envelope your legs, finishing the outfit off with black, patent leather heels.
On your wrists and neck lies chunky pearl and gold chains, paired with earrings just as chunky. Your purse was a vintage staple, a colour combination of deep claret and gold being a striking match. Your hair, however, you kept quite basic— remaining in its usual manner, blown out, spiked up layers and swooped to the side.
"Oh my gosh, you look amazing—" She obsesses over your appearance, gushing over your style. "No wonder you took so long to get ready; it was so worth it, by the way."
You chuckle humbly. "Please. I just look like me, it's nothing special.."
"Stop that. You look beautiful, and you should know it." She takes both of your hands with a beaming smile, scaling your frame once again.
"You also look pretty too. Don't give me all the credit, now.." You retort, a soft bearing on your face.
Her head tilts. "Come on now— we're gonna miss the fun just standing around." With her words and the slam of your dorm's door, the both of you leave the room, heels clacking down the corridors of MIT, towards Tony's dorm.
By the time you reach the radius of his room, you can visibily see the walls shake with the muffled noise of blasting music heard from the other end of the hallway. Couples are seen leaving his dorm to.. have better times in better places. To each their own. You and your friend walk through the doorway and get overwhelmed with the sheer intensity of an MIT party.
Flashing lights alternate colours and cover the atmosphere in a rave-like mood. There's barely any space to stand, let alone breathe whilst being sandwiched by practically the whole school. All the dresses worn dare to linger by girls' knees, going as short as the upper thigh region. Multiple bodies move like fluid, dancing in place.
In everyone's grasp is a classic. The red, plastic, party cups — holding some sort of concoction that seriously does not look safe to consume at all. Blaring from the speakers is a rotation of either Madonna, Led Zeppelin, or AC/DC that split your eardrums after minutes of exposure. The smell of body sweat, cheap punch and cigarette smoke hits your nostrils and makes you wince.
Everything a classic dorm party needs is right here in Tony Stark's space, and everyone seems to be having a blast.
"I told you. You'd miss out—" Your friend attempts to yell over the music.
"What?" You exclaim back harder, looking her way.
"I told you, you'd be missing out—" She shouts harder, barely audible over the music.
"Let's go get a drink." Your friend grasps your wrist and before you know it, both of you cut through the swarm of people to the drink stand.
A massive, glass bowl of god knows what simmers as the party goes on, holding a ladle too. Your friend grabs a cup and generously ladles a good amount of punch. She hands the cup to you and pours another one for herself. You stare at the liquid in the cup and shudder, taking a deep breath before you sip. Your face contorts in disgust, looking at your friend.
"This tastes like ass.." You raise your voice so she can hear you. She tries it herself, her tongue sticking out in distate.
"Yeah, no, this is actually shit." She giggles before taking your cup and pouring the brew in a nearby potted plant.
"I'm gonna go find the others— apparently they said they're coming now.. Bit last minute, if you tell me." Your friend says, and in a blink, she's gone, already surfing the crowd in pursuit.
And then you lock eyes with Tony. You see him raise an eyebrow before drifting over to you.
"Didn't think you'd rock up to my party." He hums, gaze wandering appreciatively over your dress. He can only conceal so much of his admiration for you, after all..
"You surprisingly don't seem like the party type."
"Your disgusting glaring makes me want to leave even more, by the way." You jab at him, which makes Tony's eyes snap back up to your face.
"Aww," he coos at you. "We're all gonna miss you if you go, you know. Party can't run without you.." He quips sarcastically.
There's silence between you two before Tony suddenly speaks, voice stripped of its usual taunt. It's more.. neutral? Normal, even?
"Do you know how to play beer pong?" He probes, and you look at him as if he's offended you.
"Oh, you're asking me that? I am the best at beer pong. Seriously, you wouldn't believe it." You scoff. You were right— beer pong was your party trick, and everyone back at home begged for you to be on their team constantly.
"I'll hold you to that." He turns and looks at you over his shoulder.
"You gonna come or what?" At his words, you scurry off, following his direction.
A few drinks in and a few games later, you begin to loosen up a bit. Have some fun, your friend's words. You don't really know where she went after that or if she left altogether; turns out you spent a hefty amount of time with Tony.
Surprisingly enough.
You're currently dancing with him, bodies pressed together amongst the sea of people. The both of you are slightly fogged up by the mist of alcohol, sober enough to think, at least. But, who actually wants to think at a party?
You and him forget so hard. You forget everything. Your frames sway with the music, legs starting up with a dull ache as you dance the night away. You ended up disregarding thinking so much that you got yourself landed in Tony's bedroom amidst the chaos of the party.
With the slam of his bedroom door shut, stifling the life of the party, he persistently pins you to the oak. His breath hitches as he takes the time to look at your face properly. You were beautiful, and there's no doubt about that. It was just that Tony was too caught up in the vying, the rivalry to notice.
"You've got me in your bedroom, all to yourself, and you're not gonna make a move, Stark?" You snark at him, despite being the submitting one in the situation.
"Shut up." He snarls at you.
"You'll have to put more effort than that to shut me u—" He cuts off your words abruptly with a heated kiss, conveying the weight of a million unspoken, tense words. Your gasp is barely distinct as Tony kisses you harder, more desperately; like he's starved.
His hands roam, touching and prodding whatever he can— your curves, your hips, running down the length of your arms. His fingers scale you like a map, learning yet tenative.
Mid-session, your phone buzzes and Tony pulls away in slight annoyance. He looks down at your fumbling hands clutching your phone.
"Who is it—" He says impatiently, lips swollen fresh from kissing and foot tapping on the wood.
"My friend. Wants to know where I am." You look at him and your eyes widen when he takes your phone and throws it on the armchair by his bed.
"Forget about your friend.." He mocks, then goes back to your lips, stealing them after the interruption.
His fingertips burn. Like he's done this before. His touches are too experienced, too precise to be a one-off time. Your tongues intertwine as his hand sneaks to the small of your back— drawing you tight to his chest. Gone is the usual cockiness in his eyes; as he kisses you, there's pure, unfiltered desire. Want.
Need.
But Tony, of course, has the nerve to add comments into your make-out session.
"Your voice is so fucking pretty—"
"Stark, shut up." You grit out, kissing back.
"Okay, that's kinda hot.." He grins at your fiesty prod.
"You're submissive?" Your breaths mingle with one another due to the proximity.
"With the right woman, I can be anything, sweetheart."
He pulls away, panting for air— but you're not about to let him catch a break. You capture his lips yet again, pulling your body forward and kissing with just as much intensity, if not more. He's taken aback by your boldness before adjusting so, investigating your mouth. You let out a brief groan at his actions, and he pulls away again suddenly.
"What?" You say, out of breath, chest heaving as you look into his eyes. "Why'd you stop..?"
"You just groaned." He states, lips twitching. You huff. Really? Is this the time?
"Seriously?" You look agitated, hints of your mood visible in your eyes. "That's all you have to say?"
"I made you groan—" He teases, a glint of amusement in his voice.
"If you're gonna use your mouth, at least put it to good use, no?" You rebound with a stubborn streak.
"Bet." His singular word is all you hear before he drops to his knees, looking up at you with desire.
"Wait, what are you.."
"Putting my mouth to good use. Like you said." He hums before unbuckling your heels and chucking them off to the side. His hands slither up your enveloped legs, moving higher. Higher and higher. Before he hooks his fingers into the waistband of your tights and sliding them down your legs.
Once they slip off, he peels off your undergarments and suddenly, you can feel the cold breeze of the charged air everywhere.
He looks up at you again for confirmation before he hikes up your dress and leans his face forward. As soon as he makes contact with you, it elicts a gasp out of you. You can feel his tongue plunge into you, further and further, extending your limits.
You immediately arch your back at the feeling and you push up against his face.
It's when he starts to move is when your pleasure starts up. He treats you like you're to be worshipped, taking you slow but not too slowly. Quickly, but dragging out your need. You feel your head loll back against the wood with a thud, too immersed in the feelings Tony's provoking inside you to care right now. His teeth graze you and you swear you let out a whimper, fingers threading in his long chestnut locks.
"Shit.." You breath out, holding back on your moans.
He picks up the pace and you find yourself yanking the strands of his hair. Tony groans with every tug you give him, only moving his mouth faster. You crave for more of the feeling, pushing his head closer; desperate for more friction. Your moan is unfiltered when his teeth scrape your clit in glee.
Tony pulls away slightly to speak, voice not fully clear.
"Who would've thought you were so needy in the bedroom.." He jabs towards you, almost in a belittling way. You whine in reponse at the loss of touch. He raises an eyebrow at you as he rises.
"Oh, you're not coming yet. This was only the half-time show. Haven't even had the main event yet and you're all flustered.."
The timbre of his voice makes the pool in your stomach increase and the flush on your cheeks hotter. Of course Tony of all people would still be a jerk in bed.
He walks over to the plush bed and tales a seat on the end. He tilts his head at your stationary figure.
"You're just gonna stand there? Last time I checked, sex was a two man job, you know." He claws at his shirt and sheds it off, his upper body nude. And, holy shit alright.
You heard rumours that Tony was jacked under the lab coats and button up shirts but you hadn't thought he was that muscly.. He looks like perfection hidden under polyester, sculpted like a god. His biceps were surprisingly large, probably from all of the inventions. You swallow and your eyes roam in admiration, taking steps closer to him. When you halt in front of him, he raises an eyebrow.
"Seems like you're enjoying the view. Now, how about giving me a view to enjoy too?" He smirks, the usual cadence of his voice resilient.
You turn around, back to his front. "Can you..?" You gesture to the zipper and his eyes gleam.
Without further ado, he slowly drags the zipper down, marvelling at the expanse of so much skin being exposed all at once. Once the zipper comes fully down, he almost yanks the fabric off of you. You turn back around, and Tony takes a second to just admire you.
"You're pretty beautiful." He openly gapes at your naked skin.
"You say that to all your fucktoys?" You retort.
"Only the good ones." He watches as you unfasten your bra, kicking away all the clothing into a corner.
"So I'm 'good?'"
"Amazing, more like." He grabs you and sits you down on his lap, still clothed despite you being fully bare. His hands wander around, cupping your breast, surfacing your inner thighs. You take the opportunity to tease him back.
One of your hands slides down to his crotch and starts palming him there. His body tenses at your bravery, and he lets out a shuddering breath.
"Fuck.." He grunts at your touch, hips subtly jerking up to meet your hand. Now you're in control.
"You like this?" You taunt him, pressing down harder. He nods in response, letting out a groan.
"I heard the rumours. About your dick."
"Oh, yeah?" He rasps, trying to keep up his usual cockiness, but failing. "Pray tell."
"It's massive— and thick. Feels like a dream and leaves you craving more."
"Well, why don't you see for yourself?" Tony's voice gets less and less controlled with every press of your palm to his lap. Teasingly, you unzip the zipper ever so slowly, feigning struggle with the buckle. Tony looks conflicted and annoyed at your actions.
"Fucking tease." He finally grits out, a tinge of desperation in his voice.
"Sorry, what was that?" You smile a little too sweetly for his liking.
"Shut up and undress me." You comply as he kicks his shoes off, and helps with undressing his lower half. Once Tony's boxers are off, you settle back onto his lap.
Honestly? The rumours weren't a complete lie. His dick was pretty thick and stuck up a little taller than average. On the head glistened a sheen of pre-cum from earlier. His hair was well groomed and trimmed neatly.
Typical for a genius billionaire to have money lying around for a trim down there.
You position yourself, aligning your hole with his cock. Taking a deep breath, you sink down. You let out a tremble feeling the head of him inside you, Tony watching your express intently. The two of you make eye contact.
"Don't tell me you can't take it." He mocks you with a raised eyebrow.
"Sure I can." You petuantly retort, sinking down slowly to adjust to his length. You were sort of struggling, but you wouldn't admit that.
And suddenly, he thrusts up and bottoms down into you with one rapid motion. You moan loudly at his wrench diving past your folds and in places never touched before.
"Wow, you're tight.." He breathes out, getting used to the feel of you tight around his cock before beginning to pull out slowly. Once only the head is inside you again, you feel him piston his way back inside, hitting the sweet spots and making you whimper.
"You're not a virgin, right?" He suddenly asks, and you blink.
"..No. Of course not." You raise an eyebrow. "I know what I'm doing—"
Tony almost looks surprised at your answer. "Can't think of any people who'd wanted to fuck you anyway.."
He keeps his thrusts at a fixed speed, your bouncing down and his hips moving upwards creating a steady rhythm. The way his dick never fails to hit every corner of you makes the pooling in your stomach increase. Your sounds of pleasure and his grunts along with skin slapping echo in the room. For once, you're grateful for the noise of the party drowning your intimacy out.
"Fuck. You're actually.. good at this." He pants, a hand going down to tease your clit, making your noises louder and Tony's grin wider.
"You like that, huh? Being teased?"
"Yeah.. Yes—" You let out a breathy moan at the sensations, legs spreading wider with every persistent movement from him.
You hear the occasional buzzing of your phone every now and then, probably a hundred piling missed calls from your friends. Tony doesn't seem to notice, however.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, you feel one hand leave you, coming up to squeeze your throat lightly. Your gasps now are more laboured, taking more effort to breathe. The other hand settles on your hip bone to slam you down just a little harder, helping you bounce on him.
Looking up at Tony, you see his wicked grin. Seeing him a lot, you've began to get used to his variety of smirks and smiles. But this one? It's different. It's wicked like he's imagined this a million times whilst getting off. Wicked like he's waited for this to happen.
The thought of him wanting you in secret makes a thrill shiver down your body. It does nothing to the vaulting pleasure simmering under your skin, though.
Tony picks up the pace, and you swear you start to struggle holding it together. Your breaths get ragged, uncontrollable, louder.
"Fuck." you gasp. "..I don't— I don't know if I can hold out any longer." You find yourself slowly becoming an illiterate mess of moans and whimpers.
"I know you can. You're fucking stubborn as shit, you'll last." His dismissive tone doesn't help the pleasure inside of you decrease. Your moans get more unhinged as you try not to blur the lines between fiction and reality.
Your skin burns, the vigor of the heat from Tony spreads like wildfire across your body. You feel your body shake with every push of his dick into you, flush rushing to your stomach.
You bite your lip subconsciously as every thrust starts to hurt. Hurt in good ways you've never imagined before. Pain and pleasure morph into one as you enter a state of euphoria.
"Can't.. I can't." You moan eagerly.
"How badly do you want to come, hmm?"
Your breath tremors. "So— so fucking bad.."
"Prove it."
"Fuck.. fuck you, Stark." You manage to rough out.
"I better hear some begging. Unless you don't want to come, that's also an option—"
His words evoke something inside you and you get stripped of all sanity, dumbing yourself down to a pleading shambles.
"Please.. please. I need this— Gotta come so bad.. You don't understand."
His movements don't cease, rather getting faster. He looks at you with an eyebrow raised.
"And you expect me to let you come after that abysmal performance." He deadpans. "You'll have to do much better than that."
Your eyes roll back into your head as you struggle to collect yourself. You let out a needy whine, clawing at Tony's back.
"Please.. I promise I'll listen to you— I can't hold it, Stark. I'll do anything you want, anything.." You feel your words turning into meaningless babbles as you lose your composure bit by bit.
"You'll do anything I want?" He questions, smirk turning into a shit-eating grin.
"Anything—" You moan, feeling him everywhere, all at once. Your jaw goes slack, lost in the pleasure of it all.
"Beg some more. I'm not satisfied."
"It— it hurts.. I need to cum, please. Please.. I deserve it, I deserve this—" You arch your back in hopes that he'll let you release.
He takes a moment to look you up and down, entranced at the sight of such an uptight girl unravelled. By him, of all people. His rival. Your face is sheathed in a coral shade, all pretense lost to the clutches of desire. Words are a distant memory, moans and cries being the only reverberation in the room.
You feel Tony's body go rigid as the slaps of skin get louder. His grunts get more frequent, more uneven. He's close, too.
"Come for me," he whispers, and with that— the tight coil in your stomach undoes itself; you scream as loud as you can possibly muster. You clench Tony so tight, he's groaning and moaning too. Gripping on his shoulders, you ride out your high. You feel sharp, more intense thrusts now as he's teetering on the edge of letting go.
Tony's body locks up as he lets out a cry, his seed filling you up with haste. You both stare at eachother, chests heaving. Both of you still ride the emotions off, still under a shared haze of alcohol and want.
He grabs your hips gently and slowly lifts you off, watching as his cock slowly becomes visible again.
With a pop sound, he's out and you find yourself whining at the loss of contact. Trickling of both of your bodily fluids drips down your thighs and goes onto Tony.
He notices this and pushes it back in with his finger, making you whine.
He settles you back down on his lap and the two of you just.. sit there. You go limp on his frame, head on his chest. Tony then gently unties your hair and watches it cascade down onto his skin.
And then, you close your eyes, resorting to the land of slumber at last— having no recollection of what happens after.
Morning light filters in through the silk curtains. Your eyes crack open and you jolt up. You look at your surroundings. A headache immediately rushes to you and you put a hand to your forehead with a wince and squeezing of your eyes.
You weren't drunk, but you were tipsy. And you never were a heavy drinker, anyway.
A plush, luxurious dorm room with satin sheets and a curtain wall with slightly askew curtains. You realise you're naked with a flush and tug the duvet higher to conceal your body.
You don't recognise this dorm at all..
On the floor, you find every article of your clothing discarded in all corners of the room. You also find masculine clothes thrown on the ground everywhere. And then it hits. You recognise that outfit.
You looked to your left and you wished you never did.
There lying peacefully, soundly in rest without a care in the world is Tony Stark. Your eyes widen as everything hits. You fucked your rival and you woke up in his bed.
You're speechless for a moment, expecting anything but this to happen when you first awoke. Immediately, you scramble out of bed and find your phone on a nearby armchair. Running around the room in desperation to dress yourself, you pick your phone up and click the side button on.
30% battery. 55 missed calls. 40 missed text messages.
Shit.
Shit, shit, shit. You clasp your bra and pull on your dress eagerly, not caring about the zipper. The stubborn, pounding headache slows down your movements slightly. Slipping your heels back on at last, you turn to the door. Taking one last glance at Tony's sleeping form, you have a sorry look as you rush out of his bedroom and out of the dorm— running down the hallways of MIT, humiliated and hurrying.
After a day's worth of learning, you resign to your usual study area— the library. It's a fairly quiet place, easy to focus in the calm surroundings.
You even have your own table; well, not exactly your own, but everyone's establised that it's your regular study space. Open books spread out across your desk, you're knee deep into the content, not caring about the world right now.
You're so unbothered about the world to the point where you hadn't realised you were left alone in there. Libraries are quiet, but they have the rebellious, muttered chatter here and there. Right now? Eerie, pin-drop silence.
You look up from your notebook and become aware that the library is now a ghost town. Setting your pen down, your chair scrapes as you get up. You meander the large space.
You walk down library aisles. Nothing. You go to the other side of the library, where there's more desks. Not a single person. Every step you take, you realise that you're more and more alone.
Looking up at the digital clock, it reads "12:30 AM." Shit. You run to the entrance, legs burning with the intensity.
You give the handle a tug. It doesn't budge. You give it a harder tug, multiple tugs— nothing.
Your eyes widen when you realise you're locked in.
"Great. We'll be in here the whole night.." You hear a voice you haven't heard from since yesterday.
You freeze up hearing it and turn to see none other than Tony. Your eyes go wide as saucers and the flush makes no delay in its pursuit. You find yourself particularly grateful for the dimmed lights, which obstruct a clear view of your face.
Your eyes meet his and the world stops. Flashbacks to last night appear in your head, his moans and grunts, the way he looked at you in the moment..
In his eyes, you see the exact reflection of your own conflict. Your mind starts to race with all the possible rhetoricals, each question wanting to be the ringleader in the circus of your head.
Does he feel it, too? Did he like the sex as well? Maybe, just maybe, does he want to know me like I want to him?
You can't help but think. His eyes that night were barren of his personality, leaving behind pure pleasure. Friends don't look at one another like that. And rivals especially don't look at one another like so. You find yourself confuddled, trying to see where you stand in his world.
But, were the two of you really ever rivals in the first place?
Sure, you competed academically; however, you never really knew Tony like that and never had a valid reason to hate him. You couldn't tell anyone his favourite colour, but you know exactly what scores he's gotten for the past months.
You know him— but you don't know the real him. Sometimes, you find yourself wanting to drop the act and get to know the person behind this grand performance.
And only yesterday you had realised how.. attractive he is. No wonder he's such a playboy, he gets what he wants due to being pretty and smart.
"You gonna gape at me or what?" Tony speaks as if nothing ever happened. When in reality, everything happened just last night. There's no way he would've forgotten, right?
"We're locked in here for the next hours to come. And if we don't speak to each other, then that makes it a million times harder for both of us." His words aren't wrong. And before you know it, the two of you are back to normal, like you hadn't hooked up prior.
The seconds tick by. You and Tony are now sat on the floor next to each other, backs leant against a bookshelf. The clock reads: "1:15 AM." Your head hits the oak as you look at him, noticing how he's been staring at you ever since you guys sat down.
"You're staring. You don't stare, ever."
Your voice sounds out in the empty library, causing Tony to really look in your eyes. He swallows— nervousness is not like him— before finally speaking.
"I.. I want to say something." His words sound final. "To you." He clarifies quickly. You raise an eyebrow at his unusual behaviour and nod your head for him to speak.
"I don't know how to word this.. but I've felt it for ages and I need to know if you do too."
You're confused at his cryptic tone. "What do you mean?"
"Ever since I saw you for the first time, I just knew I had someone on my level. Someone who would give me a hard time— and maybe I needed that. Maybe I liked that."
"Stark, stop being so mysterious—" You're cut off by his ongoing barrage of words.
"Last night, I actually slept. I never sleep and for some reason, I slept when I was with you.. Last night made me realise a lot of things, actually. It's why I'm talking to you now."
You see a shy side of him not usually projected to everyone. Tony Stark, a boy so cocky and sarcastic with an answer to everything— looks uncertain about it all.
"Tony, what are you trying to say?" You flinch at the use of his name. His eyes widen, too. Since your rivalry began, you never called him Tony. Always his last name, Stark. Not even during last night, you had uttered his first name. You scold yourself internally for ruining the moment you shared. Taking a step back, you start to apologise.
"Fuck— I'm sorry." At your muttered apology, Tony is surprisingly quick to respond. And he addresses you by your first name too. Something both of you have done for the first time right now.
Now you're even. Your whole motive has always been to become better than him. But in this moment, you both find yourselves lying on the same level. There's no competition, no winners and losers. Just the two of you sat in this shared revelation.
"Just.. just get to the point."
You look at him with confusion in your irises. You want clarity, you want to know what his words really mean; because it's 1 in the morning and your brain is working overtime, trying to put the pieces together.
There's a pause between you before Tony speaks, saying your name again.
"I think I.. I like you. I've tried to escape it and I can't. So— I like you."
𖥔 ݁ ˖ a/n: wow and we're done!!!!! can we give me some credit for the fic title i genuinely am so proud of that haha i quite enjoyed writing the dynamic of tony and the reader, especially the flirting ngl. you can tell i tried so bad to make tony in character and i would say i did an alright job. for the smut though.. it's my first time writing smut in second person— i've wrote in first before— and honestly? i feel like i did ass 😣😣😣

Steve's laugh echoes through your mind every now and then.
The sound of his pleasure— deep and rich like honeyed candy that always felt like solace. His smile, small and shy, had never failed to light up the bustling city of your heart. Your imagination shifts to the thick, dirty blond strands of hair that used to lace between your fingers like a perfect fit. Those eyes, they held the weight of multiple summer skies and seized the weariness of your heart. His irises held you captive to his love, hypnotising in their wake. His rosy lips were so velvetly, beckoning you to kiss them.
And you did. Always.
When it's not his laughter, the sweet nothings take over instead. Whispers meant only for your ears chant in your head and abruptly stop that famed freight train of thoughts. All those "sweetheart's", those "I love you's" are branded into your brain, leaving you to deal with the eternal sting afterwards.
Murmurs of how he was your favourite person play back like broken records. Words only meant for you, like pinky promise kisses.
He smelled of cedarwood and late August evenings and home. You yearn for those Sunday mornings full of black coffee and slightly burnt toast back, when he'd brush that stray hair away from your face, holding your waist while you kissed. Slowly, softly, like the world paused for you two. Like you were the only thing that actually mattered in such a busy world.
You yearn for the intimacy back, his hands lathering suds in your cascading hair ever so gently, in soothing circular motions. And when you'd do the same back, seeing him melt under your touch was the highlight of your days together. You want those times back where you felt loved. When you felt cared for.
But in brief moments like those, there were never any façades. Not "The American Dream," nor "S.H.I.E.L.D's finest." No pretending, or deception, or grand performances.
Just.. you and Steve.
You crave the sweet— oh, so sweet— memories of what you used to be, what you could've become. Sometimes, you can't help but dwell on those stupid "what if's," the "possibly's" and the "maybe's." You're still stuck at the restaurant, glued to the seat as if it never happened between the two of you.
You wish that titles never got in the way of your bond. Since, you've never really loved your job as much as you had before, knowing that it's the reason why.
The two of you find yourselves conversing now, but you know deep down that it'll never be the same as it was before.
As it was before.
The sun's gentle morning rays filter through the vast curtain wall, casting a soft glow on the otherwise sanitary, organised desks. Birds fly across partly clouded skies, their chirps being nature's harmony. Agents from across the facility, in different wings, untie in walking around the space to complete their errands.
Your heels clack with every step, reverberating off the walls as you stroll down the uniform corridors of S.H.I.E.L.D. Soon enough, even the clicks of your stilettos blend into the noise of the everyday office.
A whiff of ozone and fresh paper plugs your nostrills, and the sound of files slapping shut, keys tapping, and hushed conversation reach your ears at around the same time. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s emblem is plastered on almost every single wall you come across, the electric blue eagle practically engraved in your head by now.
You don a white, button-up blouse that compliments a sleek, navy blazer. An ID with an outdated photo of yourself and your credentials in a smaller font teeters off your breast pocket. A marine blue pencil skirt stays snug around your lower half, the hem just shy of your mid thigh region. Dark tights envelope your long legs, leading a trail down to your jet black heels, just over three inches in height.
Scattered around your apperance is subtle gold jewellery adorned onto your skin, as if it belongs there. Your hair is tied back into its usual neat bun with a few astray hairs here and there. Not everyone's perfect, you think.
You stride towards one of the boardrooms for your 9:00 briefing. "Your presence is mandatory," as said in a prior email from Nick Fury himself.
And Fury never directly emails— unless it's important. So, this is extremely important.
Swerving a sharp left, every turn you take unlocks a whole new world, a whole new perspective encapsulated in just four walls. From time to time, you find yourself marvelling at the intelligence behind the operative. But, that's Stark Tech for you.
Your movement stops to a halt as you reach one of the many frosted glass doors, with S.H.I.E.L.D's famed eagle etched onto it. A black door plaque mounted centrally with blue text reads: "BOARDROOM #3." Taking a deep breath and letting the air puff out of your cheeks, your palm wraps around the door handle as you give it a jerk and a push.
Multiple pairs of eyes look up at your entrance. You meet every single iris, some faces you recognise in an instant; others not so much. Everyone's sat around a winding mahogany table at the centre of the room. The fluorescent lights beat down onto the wood, making the environment even more tense. It's fairly quiet, save for the occasional cleared throat or shuffling of papers.
At the head of the table sits Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D, and founder of the Avengers Initiative. The one-eyed man gives you a short nod of his head in acknowledgement.
To his right? Agent Maria Hill, an influential woman known across the building and a close confidant of Fury. Basically, she's a big deal around here. You've heard that she secretly admires your work effort, and you've never lived it down since.
However, to Fury's left?
That exact shade of blue glides over your figure. That effortlessly pretty head of hair that your hands are a little too familiar with. Those same slightly pursed lips that showered you constantly with affection. His muscles bulge and struggle against a tight, button-down white shirt. Folded arms only accenuate his brawniness, and the sleeves are bundled up to his elbows, showing off his forearms. Sat on a slight slouch due to his imposing 6'2 figure, gone is his smile, replaced with a contemplative expression.
To Fury's left is someone you know all too well.
Your breath hitches when cerulean finally meets your own eyes. You hadn't registered how attractive he looks at this very second. Suddenly, you forget how to function, your body shutting down.
Steve Rogers.
To be honest, you never had moved on. You were always.. there. Your thoughts sometimes wander. Was he ever there too? You couldn't leave it all behind, not after the gruelling truth given to you on that Friday night those ages ago; one of your only days off. Nor during the depressive aftermath, full of never-ending tears, your favourite flavour of ice-cream and most of all— desperate longing.
And you curse yourself for never moving on, because it's the reason for your abhorrent, growing flush developing on the apples of your cheeks. It starts off slow, and then spreads like wildfire over your skin. The heat reaches you first before the redness and you subtly claw at your collar for an escape, lips discreetly trembling.
He notices.
Of course he notices— he always noticed everything. Every flicker of your expression, every flutter of your eyelashes.
As the moment prolonged, you took the oppoturnity to look deep into his eyes. It's something the two of you hadn't done in months prior. Those sapphire oceans hold a flash of just something more under the surface. You observe a tangled mess of feelings; reminscence, guilt, ache, pining. His eyes seem to hold the weight of a million messy, desperate sentences. Does he feel this torment you've tried helplessly to escape, too? Does the odd casuality of your conversations now bother him, too? You look harder, as if it'll give you all the answers you need. It doesn't.
His eyebrows furrow faintly, as if decoding your gaze. He's trying to figure you out. Awkwardness begins to stab your heart, your brain, everywhere multiple times as your feet freeze— stuck in place.
You abruptly blink and the realisation pales, hitting you like a rush of cold water to skin.
It's not just you and him here.
Fury raises an eyebrow at your silent interaction and tilts his head to the chair opposite Steve, in a gesture. Some of the more bolder agents start to murmur quietly as you hastily take your seat, nervously smoothing down your skirt in panic. You take another breath, shakier but releasing. Swallowing, the collective attention of the room shifts to Fury, the man rising to a stand.
"Thank you for attending." He starts gruffly, and with a flick of his hand, a hologram grows in size, a centerpiece on the table.
"Updates regarding the Berlin case.." From there, you stop, tuning into the palace of thoughts in your head instead. You zone out into a world of your own, as Fury drawls on about the same high-priority case talked about for weeks now; S.H.I.E.L.D.'s current focus.
But you're more interested in the man sat opposite you. Steve's looking at Fury with that concentrated frown you remember, and also secretly love. Behind your teasing remarks towards it, you wanted him to do it more. You would never admit that, though.
Then suddenly, more of the recollections come crashing down on you. The nights when he'd simply listen to your mindless chatter after shifts, twirling a strand of your hair and watching you like you were a work of art. You liked that, too.
You wouldn't admit that one either. That's not like you to do.
You become aware that you've stared at him for most of the briefing and swiftly look away. You're not going to stay hung up on someone who clearly doesn't feel the same about you. It's when you hear your name from Fury is when you listen back in.
"—and you, Agent. You're going to work alongside Rogers for this mission. The two of you are the best choices we have at the moment, and I guarantee you'll finish the job off quickly."
Your eyes widen and your heart stops beating.
Work with Steve?
Panic and dread races through your head at the thought of working with him. Your fingernails dig a little deeper into the armrest instinctively. It's hard enough having weird, strained conversations with him, let alone a full-blown mission with just you two. Plus, you don't even know where you stand in his world anymore. In yours, however, he's still on a shining pedestal just like he was all that time ago.
You don't realise that your breathing is abnormal and irregular until you see the multiple judgemental pairs of eyes all cast on you.
"Does there seem to be a problem?" Yes, there is a very big problem, Fury, he's my past lover and whenever we interact, it's the most uncomfortable thing ever, you want to shout at the top of your lungs so badly. But you resist and respond with a meek, obedient, "No, sir."
"Good." The director glances between you and Steve. "I want you up first thing tomorrow. 0600 hours, you should be suited up and ready to go. Affirmative?"
"Yes, Fury." This time, a lower, deeper voice sounds out. Steve.
"Dismissed." The one-eyed man barks rapidly and agents scramble to their feet, fumbling with files and orderly leaving the boardroom. You, Steve, Hill and Fury remain. Fury gives the two of you a nod before stepping out, Maria following suit.
And then there were two.
Steve meets your eyes once more. However, there's something.. different in them this time around. Softer. His eyes' usual detachment holds a glint of gentleness in them. Those sapphire gems carry the words of a poet, beautiful and haunting— brutal and emotional.
"Agent." He suddenly speaks, voice deep and rich. You almost flinch. Stay calm, stay calm, stay calm.
"Captain." You mumble back feebly, not sure how to react. Your fingers play with eachother, making cracking noises with every fluid movement. That weird pang settles inside you as you find your vocal cords used towards him yet again.
He takes a fleeting glimpse down to your unconscious fidgeting before gazing back up at your face.
"Let's see if you're still upholding that reputation of yours. 'S.H.I.E.L.D's top agent,' as Fury calls it?" Is he.. teasing you? You're taken aback by the sudden shift in mood, watching his lips quip up in a hint of amusement.
"You'll find that I am a very competent worker, Rogers." You snap back, mirroring his own mouth, dimples present in an attempt to come off as normal when you're currently anything but.
"Oh, yeah? Well, I need to see that for myself before I make a judgement."
"Look all you will. But everyone knows I'm the best." And with that, you turn and leave him solitary in the room, your heels making their authoritative, monotonous sound. You don't see the slightly charmed shake of his head at your actions behind your back.
The door swings behind you at the absence of your figure.
Dawn slowly rises from its horizon, painting the sky into a beautiful, blended kaleidoscope of hues that all wage war with one another to bless the sky. The world seems too quiet right now, too peaceful. The usually busy institution is now down to a hushed tone, a few agents scattered around, working in the calm rise of day. Your face drags an inkling of fatigue as you travel across the building.
You make your way down to the armory as promised. Fury has yet to send you and Steve out to Berlin to eliminate the last of the HYDRA threats that lurk in the shadows, around the world. Punching the buttons on the keypad, you step into the inviting lift as the doors slide shut and you slowly move down.
On the way down, your mind debriefs the mission details properly. You and Steve were assigned to infiltrate the last HYDRA base, situated on the outskirts of Berlin. You're to kill all of their associates remaining, and find more of their atypical technology on the side.
The sound of a ding marks your arrival, and the doors slide open to a dimly lit, cramped armory room. Taking steps out of the lift, you look around, wondering where Steve is. After surfacing the room with no sign of him, you shrug and set your things down on a nearby bench. Extending your arms above your head, you stretch before beginning to suit up.
You shed your clothes you're wearing, and you put a bulletproof vest on first underneath, the continous clicks of the side release buckles being the only sound present. Next, you strap on the ebony tactical gear, fastening more buckles and belts.
Then you hear the sound of faint footsteps.
Steve.
The blond man steps into the armory from another doorway, a white tank top hugging his sharp planes. His biceps protrude, the muscles perfectly sculpted like clay. Tapered jeans lay low on his waist, and shoes that add on a few more inches to his height.
"Agent."
"Cap." You exchange words a little too awkwardly for comfort. It's not that you aren't on speaking terms with Steve, it's just hard to actually speak to him, knowing what you've done with him in the past and where you stand now.
You swallow and immediately look away in feigned disregard, feeling your cheeks heat up in betrayal. You go back to suiting up, trying so badly to deny the flush lurking in your body.
Steve comes over to stand by you, his upper arm brushing against yours as he reaches for his gear to also do the same. You flinch when his bare skin touches yours and your mind goes into overdrive. This is the closest you've been to him since the two of you.. happened.
"You sleep okay?"
"Yeah." You reply too quickly. Keeping the conversation short and concise, your focus is mainly on suiting up and shunning the intrustive thoughts out as if they were spirits.
He doesn't seem to notice your inner conflict; for now that is. You find yourself greatly overthinking the accidental touch, mind running a mile a minute. You grimace and brace yourself internally. Ignoring it all, you clip on the last few belts of your torso gear.
All you hear for the rest of the time is his muttered "Sorry's" and apologies with every graze, bump, every jostle that makes him all the more closer to you and leaves that tingling sensation racing up and down your body.
Taking a seat, you're hunched over to tie your shoelaces, intertwining the rope multiple times so it doesn't fall out. Looking back up, you're met with the sight of Steve applying hand wraps. You'd never noticed how nice his hands looked. He's intently wrapping the white cotton as it blankets around his palm. After he's done, he flexes his hand, veins contracting under the wrap.
You get thrown back to when those calloused hands would embrace your own, warm and welcoming. Thrown back to when his thumb would glide over the skin on the dorsal of your hand in an attempt to ground you. Thrown back to when he kissed each of your knuckles— a you thing— and squeezed you tighter.
You can't stop the thoughts around him for some reason. You build up a dam in your mind to block the tsunami of memories that await. Harshly tying the last strand, you fully stand up, locking eyes with Steve. He's strapping himself in the last bits of protective armour and testing his earpiece.
"Ready to go?" He probes, your non-commital hum in response being enough for him.
Both of you ever so conveniently have to move towards the door at the same time and accidentally end up slamming shoulders. Your eyes widen and your body goes taut, as does his. You swear you can see the faintest of colour on his cheeks before it disappears.
None of you move for a good minute, still processing the unaccounted, unintentional touch.
"Ladies first." He humbly states as you basically rush out of the doorway, Steve following closely behind.
You pace your steps, hurriedly making your way to the Quinjet's bay. You and Steve are met with the sight of Fury and Hill walking towards you.
"Let's do this." Maria sounds out.
"For S.H.I.E.L.D—" Fury adds. You and Steve sync up in speaking when you reiterate:
"For S.H.I.E.L.D."
The Quinjet's doors open, and you and Steve rush out, facing a supposedly "abandoned" warehouse— the undercover HYDRA base. You stand tall, back straight beside him as you look onto the building. Your fingers inch towards your earpiece as you speak:
"What have you got, Fury?" The comms crackle slightly before the director responds.
"Approximately 50 men, all armed. Mainly concentrated on the upper floor of the warehouse. The back exit is your go-to."
At his words, Steve's eyes dart over to the rusted door beside a set of stairs. You make brief eye contact with him before clutching your gun and making a move.
Both of you make your way up the steps and stop in front of the worn-out metal. Steve brushes past you and braces for impact before shoving the door open with his elbow. The action provoked a tingling feeling in the pit of your stomach. Weird.
You step in after Steve and it's eerily quiet. They've hidden— they must know you're here. Your trained eyes take the surroundings in; the stairwell, the alternate doorways, all of the possible escape routes. Your grip on your gun gets tighter, index finger resting by the trigger in preparation.
"What's the plan?"
"You go up. I'll surface the ground floor and meet you there." His set of aquamarine find your own irises yet again in confirmation, before he holds his shield up in defense and makes steadfast steps around the space.
You make your way up the copper stairway, your shoes making inevitable clang sounds as they hit down on the material. Your face contorts into a wince with every step at the complete giveaway of your presence. Reaching the upper floor, you immediately become wary.
"Agent, 20 affilates sighted in the upper area, approximately 30 on the ground floor. Move with caution." Fury's muffled, scratchy voice beats down your left eardrum. The message doesn't assure you at all, instead making the air around you even more tense. You take steps into the room, overanalysing the floor. It's quiet; too quiet for a HYDRA base. The silence unnerves you, makes you uncomfortable.
Then— a rustle.
It barely slipped you, but it was there.
Your stance stiffens as your gun rises in alert, the metal cool against your very fingertips. Your muscles poise and ears prick up as you point the barrel at the source of the sound; your grasp being borderline painful. Stopping your breathing, you take calculated, silent steps towards a certain corner. Your index finger inches closer and closer to the trigger with every movement.
Before you can process it, an armed man charges towards you with purpose. Your body locks up and your jaw clenches, aiming for his head and pressing down hard on the trigger. The bullet pierces through his skin and the man's face morphs into shock, eyes wide.
As soon as his lifeless body hits the ground with a thud, multiple others swarm you with one motive— to defeat you.
You move towards them, also with a singular motive.
Defeat them first.
Shooting down two on your left, you elbow a man to your right, slamming him in his jaw and sending him crashing into a nearby wall. You pull the trigger a few more times before running out, whipping a magazine out from your pocket and swiftly slapping it into the gun. The HYDRA men keep coming out of hiding spots at different points of the room. Bullets rip through a good amount of men before your ammo runs out again.
The colour from your face drains when your hand in your pocket feels nothing more. Oh, shit. Surely, you packed enough magazines to last the mission.. right? But, you don't have the time to panic at all.
Not now.
"Agent, on your 9:00. Three of them." This time, it's Maria's voice relaying words to you.
"Fuck." You murmur, gritting your teeth before throwing the gun carelessly to the side. Holding up your hands to your face, you clench your fists. You were always good at hand-to-hand combat anyway. You close your eyes and exhale sharply before coming face to face with the enemy.
You punch one of the men square in the face and deliver a fierce uppercut to his jaw. He lets out a distraught sound before recoiling back to the ground in pain. Two men appear behind you in an attempt to surpise attack you. But, being trained under S.H.I.E.L.D?
You're always numerous steps ahead.
You make a pivot to the left and deliver a sharp low blow to the stomach and the groin, taking out the first man. Unexpectedly, you unsheath a small blade from your belt and drive it into the second man's gut. He cries out a piercing yell of pain before doubling over as you pull the knife out of him, leaving him stumbling to the floor.
"Your south-east." Another comment from your earpiece and your body swivells in the mentioned direction.
Three men approach you next. You knock the wind out of the first aggressor before the second one comes barreling towards you. You give a forceful kick to his knee, as he fumbles down too. Driving the third rival to the wall, you disarm him before driving one of your spare knives into his leg, cutting deep into his bone and watching him crumple down. Scaling the man's body, you take his firearm and give him a powerful kick in his bad leg out of spite.
You yank the knife out and drop the metal as it clatters to the concrete, stained crimson red. You're certain you've killed all the threats around you. Chest panting, you peer over the balcony to the lower floor to where you see a flash of blond hair currently juggling fighting four men.
Wiping the sweat from your forehead, you make haste down to the ground floor to assist.
Steve meets your eye when you come down, and you start fighting a stream of even more HYDRA affiliates. You start throwing blades ever so precisely, making clean shots as you watch the enemy drop like flies.
"Good, their numbers are going down—"
"Rogers, your weak spot's open."
"Agent, four more coming your way. 6:00." Occasional staticky comments relay to both you and Steve.
One of the men, however, manages to get up close to you and he pins you down to the ground. Your eyes widen as you realise you can't attack back, and all the air in your lungs dissipates.
Fuck. Out of all the ways you'd desired to die, this scenario was absolutely not a contender. You brace for the pending attack—
Then, all of a sudden, a metallic clang hits the oppressor's temple and his body gets wiped out. You instinctively sit up and look towards the man's dead body. Laying discarded on the floor is that infamous star emblem laced with vibranium and patriotic colours and the recognition hits. Steve saved you by throwing his only form of protection away. He did that.. for you.
Your awareness awakens again and you scramble to your feet to clutch the shield, volleying it back in his direction. Steve's abnormal reflexes catch the metal plate perfectly and uses it to block the potentially brutal attack of an opposing man.
Both of you slowly mould into a rhythm, becoming a force of nature indeed— while he attacks, you defend; when you oppose, he covers you. You support his blind spots, and he backs yours too. Steve and you end up in an almost beautiful synchronisation, each filling in for each other at any given moment. And, the input from Fury and Hill crackle in your earpieces, only enhancing your fighting.
The two of you seem to be working in this moment, even when you couldn't so well in the past.
Steve finishes off the last persistent man before straightening up, heaving with exhaustion and dripping sweat.
"Good work, Agent."
"Likewise, Rogers." You wipe your forehead again and flash him a smirk.
It worked. You and him worked.
Until an unidentifed sniper in the shadows aims for you and in the calm aftermath of the mission, Steve's keen eye catches it. His face contorts into a state of panic and he bolts your way with harrowing speed, yelling your name out with such an intensity that's never been seen from him before.
Not Agent, no formalities or titles.
Your name. He called your name.
All you hear from him after is a strangled gasp, and before you can process anything right now, his body goes rigid. He stands for a split second before barreling to the ground. You gasp at the sight of Steve's collapsed form lied on the floor.
And now you're the one screaming names as you drop down to your knees without a thought, shaking his body desperately. You fall into a spiral of horror as you helplessly cry out, your senses going into overdrive.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no— Steve, please, please, please.." You chant like a mantra, voice cracking as you stare at his lifeless frame. Your eyes burn with unshed tears, throat burning intensly with bile. You swallow the liquid back down your throat forcefully as you stare into those eyes; the eyes that used to look at you with so much love, now devoid of life.
A gut-wrenching, raw and guttural scream rips out of your throat as the tears burst out, creating puddles of hurt, of pain, of fear and panic on the blond's gear. Your breathing is laboured as you try to steady yourself, your hands violently trembling.
"Steve, please, please.. You have to stay alive. You can't die before me, Steve.. Please wake up, please—" Your voice is stripped of everything but grief; pure, unfiltered grief.
The man you long for so fucking badly can't die, not like this. Steve Rogers is not dying like this, not if you can't help it. You're not going to be the one to see the life drain from his eyes after being the one to give him that life after so long. He can't die, not here, not now— you've sworn by it, you promise, you promise.
Your shaking fingers rush to your earpiece, voice hoarse and laced with anxiety as you plead, words rushing out of your mouth in a jumbled, distressed manner.
"Fury, Fury— Hill, anybody please.. Please, Steve's been shot—" You gasp out.
"He's not breathing, Steve's not responding, someone please.. You've gotta come. Help, please, someone, anyone.. Fury, Hill— We're on the ground floor and Steve Rogers is bleeding out.. For fuck's sake, help, anybody respond to me, please, someone—" Painful sobs shake your body aggressively as you beg hopelessly for a response through to the comms.
"Agent, Agent— we're coming. The emergency team have been alerted and they're coming. Their status is T-minus two minutes.. Try and keep Rogers alive until then—"
You look down at the state of him, gear stained red all over, making you flinch a little but you hadn't cared much about it getting onto you. You take a very unconvincing deep breath before putting your hands together and pressing down on the wound. Your face twists in a sense of disgust and your gasp is horrified as you feel Steve's blood coat your hands. The bile resurfaces and you harshly swallow it back down yet again, this time with more struggle. Tears still run down your face, as you're dumbed down to a sobbing, pleading mess on the floor.
"You shouldn't have took that bullet for me, you— you selfless idiot. Have some care for yourself.." You mutter out, the words not helping your rough emotions. You knew that Steve had a selfless nature, always giving back to the people of the country. Sometimes, selflessness is a plague that hits the people that deserve it the least.
And this is an example of it casting a curse.
"I can't be the reason you die." You whisper.
"I can't have you die. I'd never forgive myself for it, Steve.. you have to live. I don't know what I'd do if you died, actually," You talk to yourself, convinced he can hear you when in reality he can't.
"Fuck—!" You yell out helplessly, looking out at the exit continually, watching; waiting for the rescue team to bolt through that rusty door and heal him. Every second feels like an eternity as you wait longer and longer, starting to doubt if they'd even come. They have to come. It's been longer than two minutes, you swear. The medics are gonna come. They wouldn't let someone like Captain America have a fate like this..
Those two minutes were the longest two minutes you've ever endured.
Hearing those sirens was possibly the best sound you've heard in your life. Paramedics swarm the area, darting to you and Steve. You stand up and back away, letting them get to work. One of them, a woman, comes over to you, and softly speaks.
"Ma'am, thank you so much for your support. We'll take it from here. He's in good hands, don't you worry.."
The shouting from the other medics, however, does nothing to ease your mountainous worry. You look down at your hands, the shaking slightly subsided. Your eyes widen when you realise Steve's blood is swamped in your hands, caked in your fingernails, just everywhere.
Your throat constricts. You knew it was there, but you hadn't been aware of it until just now. You don't realise your breathing's gotten heavier, more uncontrolled, until that same medic puts a grounding hand on your shoulder, meant to soothe.
"Ma'am— you need to breathe. Calm down. Take a breath, slowly.." You begin to get worse, wheezing, your body locking up in anxiety. You drop to the floor, muscles turning to jelly. The spiral kickstarts again, the thought of all the hypotheticals haunting your mind. What if Steve's not okay? If it weren't for me, he'd be fine, unharmed, okay.
What if he dies before I get to tell him?
You claw urgently at the collar of your gear for a release, for air, to breathe. It's too hot in here. The lights are getting brighter by the second and you can feel everything. You can feel every rapid contraction of your heart, the way that your gear wraps around your skin, stray hairs on your neck that don't usually irritate you on any other day.
You're.. powerless. Out of control. All your life, you've always controlled everything. And that way, everything went well. You let out a strained whimper at the thought of losing that control even for a second.
You have no jurisidiction. Nothing. Just overwhelming and looped fear, sorrow, the sort. Words seem to turn into a jumbled mess of letters and syllables in your head, much like everything around you right now. Your gasps get louder, more frequent as you inhale uneven, large bursts of air in hopes to breathe normally.
Eyes wide and vulnerable amidst the internal storm raging inside of you, you look to the female in a lab coat knelt to your level, her hand now rubbing your back as a gesture of comfort.
"It's okay. We can wash the blood off, it's not permanent and it won't stay there forever, okay? I need you to calm down for me.."
Whatever happens next is a blur upon recollection, dread and terror clouding away the true memory of the event. The medic's voice, the beeping of portable machines, feet shuffling around, your own breathing all fuse into muffles as fright submerges you into its waters and deems you futile in its pursuit.
Your only view has been the sterile walls of S.H.I.E.L.D'S medical wing as you sit in the corridor outside Steve's room. You haven't uttered a word since you came back from the warehouse, sitting silently. You take a few sips of water from the plastic cup a passing nurse offered you before setting it down on the side table. The water doesn't do much to heal the dryness of your throat.
You've sat here for hours now, waiting as the seconds tick by and when the doctor will emerge from the room. You've cried so much that your eyes go glassy, yet nothing leaves your tear ducts. You refuse to leave, refuse to sleep and even eat until you know Steve's okay. Dark eye bags rest on your face, your bloodshot eyes still as horrible as when you were in the warehouse. Occasionally, doubting and pushy thoughts filtered into your mind. If I was the injured one, would he wait for hours for me like I am him? Would he care that much?
He's dead and I'm waiting here just to hear news I never want uttered.
Shaking my thoughts a firm "No," my eyes flick up to the analog clock. It reads quarter to three in the morning, making it 6 hours since you took your seat. You rub a slow hand down your face, wishing that the tears would just fall out. They never did.
Waiting drives you crazy. Waiting eats at your sanity and leaves you bare. You bury your face in your hands and contemplate getting up and leaving for the fifteenth time so far until you hear footsteps.
It's Fury. He stops to a halt and looks down at your state. Something shifts in his eyes, almost concern.
"You need to get some rest, Agent." He says gruffly, with that slight tinge of worry for you.
"..I'm fine." You snap back, voice still hoarse from screaming and misuse.
"Rogers must really matter to you if you're sat here all this time for him."
That single sentence from the director makes your memories resurface yet again. He does matter, always has mattered. He matters so much, it makes you physically sick.
So many words and so many things you could've said to him all that while ago to make him stay and yet you stomached it. Brushed it off because you thought that it "had to be that way." And now you sit outside his hospital room, not aware if he's even alive at this point.
The truth is, you can't stand the thought of losing Steve permanently. You don't know if you can admit that either. Everyday, you woke up thinking, "Tomorrow he'll come back for real this time," and he never did. You knew he wouldn't and yet you still had that false hope, clinging onto it like it'll go away if you hold it too lightly. The whole time, you hid behind this facade of lies, lies to yourself about where you stand in his heart.
You're sick of evoking small talk with him when all you desire is to have those long conversations about everything and nothing at the same time.
Even after the man leaves you, his words sit with you and give you company. You walk down memory lane, to happier times. When you hadn't many cares in the world. To simpler times, when you didn't have to be anyone but you. To better times, being with just about the only person who knew you.
Your attention diverts as the door finally opens again and a male comes towards you. You shoot up from your seat and face the doctor.
"Is he okay? Steve?" you say eagerly, speaking his name significantly softer.
"He's stable. Multiple shattered ribs, otherwise just minor injuries around his body. He's currently resting now. If you want to go in and see him, just be mindful."
Your eyes light up and it's the first shred of happiness you've felt in ages. The doctor gives you a smile as you practically run into the room. Your pace slows seeing Steve's sleeping figure. He looks very much better than before, his expression at peace. The monitors beep every few moments, and the AC drones on.
You take steady steps to the armchair beside his bed and take a seat, the cushion sinking with your weight. For a minute, you sit there and merely stare at him. He looks younger, more boyish in these seconds. Just as beautiful as you remember.
Hesitantly, you reach your hand out towards his and you embrace his hand for the first time since you were together. Your eyes immediately soften, gaze travelling across Steve, remembering all the details about him.
He then cracks an eye open. Then the other. Blinking blearily a few times, his vision focuses on you, your smiling face.
"Hey." You muster out, worried that it's too forward— but you're holding your ex's hand, so really, what's more bold than that?
"Hi."
"Doctor's said you have shattered ribs. And that you need to rest."
"You do remember I'm a super soldier, no? I'll be fine in no time." He scoffs. His eyes finally glance down at your intertwined hands and he tinges a rosy pink. You quickly move your hand away like you've been burnt, your cheeks matching the hue of his.
"It's fine. You can hold my hand.." At that, you slither to his grip and this time, he squeezes your hand back. Just like old times.
A comfortable silence settles over both of you until he breaks it, noticing your confliction.
"What's on your mind?" He says, ever so softly, like a welcoming caress. With that, you just get it out with.
"I missed you." The words are more of a whisper than anything, and Steve takes the time to look into your eyes. The words begin to tumble out of your mouth.
"Ever since.. I've never moved on. I always just thought that maybe you'd be the one to come back to me and fix it all. I missed you so fucking bad, Steve, it's unbelievable. I don't believe I've gone a day without you on my mind. I really want this, want us to happen again. Like how it was before. And—" You swallow dryly, hesitant to continue.
"..Take your time, sweet." He murmurs, calling you one of the many nicknames he gave you during your relationship. His words motivate you to carry on.
"And— when I saw you take that bullet for me.. Steve, I knew I had to tell you. I was so scared, so scared that you'd never wake up and that I'd never get to tell you.."
"Hey.." He consoles.
"tell you how much I loved you and how much I still love you because seeing you like that was the worst thing I've ever seen—" You begin to tear up.
"Hey, hey, hey, baby.."
"I had a panic attack, Steve. I panicked about how I'd lose you forever and I couldn't be able to live with it. I cried so much, you don't even understand. I haven't eaten, haven't done anythi—"
He cuts off your words with a kiss that lights up that city in your heart. You immediately melt into it, soft and slow and perfect. He kisses you and says all the things he held back just with the gesture. Pulling away, he cups your face and looks at you, thumb stroking your pink appled cheek.
"Don't spiral about me not being here. I'm right here and I'm real, sweetheart. You're not even close to losing me." He mutters with a smirk.
"You're everything to me. I love you back just as much, if not more. We can make it work this time. I promise you.." His words make you smile and your cheeks deepen in colour.
"And, honestly speaking? It's been you the entire time, sweet."
"It's always been you."

𖥔 ݁ ˖ a/n: wow and we're done!!!!! can we give me some credit for the fic title i genuinely am so proud of that haha i quite enjoyed writing the dynamic of tony and the reader, especially the flirting ngl. you can tell i tried so bad to make tony in character and i would say i did an alright job. for the smut though.. it's my first time writing smut in second person— i've wrote in first before— and honestly? i feel like i did ass 😣😣😣

synopsis: ❝ You're S.H.I.E.L.D's top agent— the best in everything that you do.
𖥔 ݁ ˖ a/n: omg this is my first fic!!! im a new account who genuinely has a passion for creative writing and i've chose tumblr as my outlet for words. i don't think i've ever read a fic that resonated with me or really got to me. so i just decided to turn my own thoughts into somewhat realities for the internet to see. i hope you enjoyed the fic and i am always open to criticism as much as praise! with this piece, i did feel like my writing downgraded at certain points like the whole action scene 🙃 + the suiting up bit being too short for my liking.. however i absolutely thrive writing angst and heavy emotions and romance (that's lowkey obvious in the way my writing switches up ngl..) so whateverrrr
