Hekate's Wheel of the Year 2022
The following is the calendar for Hekatean Witches for the year 2022. The calendar is based on the teachings of Cyndi Brannen and her book Keeping Her Keys, a book dedicated to Hekate and learning witchcraft under Hekate’s influence. I’ve added some epithets of Hekate that relate to the seasons as well.
Winter Solstice/Yule
December 21st, 2022
December - Hekate as Soteira/Savior
During the Winter Solstice we celebrate Hekate as a Bringer of Light, as the days get shorter and spring quickly approaches we commemorate this time of year with rituals, offerings and prayers . This time of year we observe the seasonal changes and thank Hekate for the coming of light.
January 29th, 2022
January - Hekate as Kourotrophos/Guardian of Children
We honor Hekate as the Guardian of Children three separate days of the year. The first occurs in January. Thank Hekate for the blessing of children that are in your life
Imbolc
February 1st, 2022
February - Hekate as Lampadios Propolos/She who guides and is a companion.
In February this ancient Hekatean Festival happens to coincide with the Pagan Holiday, Imbolc. On this day you express your gratitude for Hekate’s guidance in your life. A ritual including fire is appropriate as well as recognizing your own accomplishments for the past year.
Spring Equinox/Ostara
March 20th, 2022
March - Hekate as Ergatis & Pammetor/Energizer & Mother of All
During Spring Equinox we recognize Hekate as the mistress of balance represented by the equal length of light and dark. We also recognize her as the energy source for all. Drawing from Ergatis we are able to transmute negative energy into something positive. Lastly, we recognize Hekate as Mother of All, celebrating the creation of life through her powers.
April - Hekate as Enodia & Empylios Eileithya/Goddess of Roads, Entrances and Keys & Midwife or Nurse of Childbirth
In the month of April we celebrate Hekate as the Goddess of Liminal Spaces. This signifies that Hekate is the guardian to the door of our futures. In April we also recognize Hekate as the Nurse of Childbirth. This signifies that Hekate is assisting us in birthing our true selves into the world.
Beltane
May 1st, 2022
May - Hekate as Erototokus Geneteira/Bearer of Love or Mother
Beltane is the time of year that we celebrate Hekate as the Great Mother, Queen of Fire or her World Soul. During this time we celebrate all forms of love and how Hekate is a mother to us. We also can celebrate our own mothers during this time as well. This month is the rite of sacred fires.
Summer Solstice/Litha
June 24th, 2022
June - Hekate as Pantos Kosmou Kleidokhos/Keeper of the Keys of the Cosmos
Litha is the time of year we recognize Hekate as the Gatekeeper of All.We celebrate the transition of light to dark and Hekate as the holder of the great mysteries of life and death. This is a great holiday for a gratitude ritual.
July 3rd, 2022
July - Hekate as Kourotrophos & Einalian Photoplex/Guardian of Children & Sea Goddess that Strikes with Light
We honor Hekate as the Guardian of Children three separate days of the year. This is the second out of the three where we celebrate the blessings of the children in our lives. We also commemorate Hekate as the Bringer of Life that renews. This is a great time to offer her water offerings and recognize the renewal in yourself.
August 13th, 2022
August - Hekate as Hegemonen/Guide
August 13th correlates to Hekate and storms. You can pay your respects to her as the storm bringer. You can do a ritual that honors Hekate for seeing you through the storms of your life and seek her guidance for future ones.

Three Core Principles of Hekatean Witchcraft
Reading Keeping Her Keys By Cyndi Brannen in my opinion was the best way to begin as a Hekatean Witch. In her book Cyndi illustrates what the three core principles of Hekatean Witchcraft are and how they are important. I wanted to write down this snippet for my online grimoire and share it with you guys. I encourage those of you interested in following Hekate to read this book or listen to the podcast of the same name!

c) Take life by the horns
Hail Hekate 🕯🗝🌹🍷💀
Doing the Craft Without Spending Money
Since I started practicing the craft, I’ve spent very little money, mainly for an oil/incense burner and some small candles. I make use of everyday items and natural finds:
Witch Bells: Made from broken Christmas decorations I repurposed.
Containers and bottles for magical waters: I clean and reuse lotion bottles and day cream containers to store ingredients. I take off any sticker or label they may have and clean the glue that remains with alcohol and a hard sponge.
I use small bottles from alcoholic drinks, cleaned thoroughly, and tie different colored threads around them to identify the type of water (e.g., moon water, rainwater, sun water).
Candles: I collect leftover wax from candles in a simple plastic tray, then melt and combine it to create a new candle.
Natural Finds: On my walks, I collect plants and stones, then identify them using apps like PlantNet and Rock Identifier. I dry them and put them in small bags, adding a label with the name of each item and store them.
Homemade Incense: I make my own incense using dried lavender and other herbs I gather.
⚠️ Important Safety Guidelines
1. Identification is Key:
Before collecting or burning anything, identify the item and research thoroughly to ensure it is safe.
-Plants: Ensure they are non-toxic and suitable for burning or keeping in your home.
-Stones: Check if they are safe to handle or use in spells (some stones can dissolve in water or release harmful substances).
-Feathers: Be cautious. Avoid touching with bare hands. They can have bacteria and parasites.
2. Avoid Toxic Materials:
Never touch or take anything that might be poisonous or hazardous. When in doubt, leave it.
Cleaning and Preparing Found Items
Wild Herbs:
1. Rinse Gently:
Rinse the herbs under cool running water to remove dirt, dust, and bugs.
2. Disinfect (Optional):
Soak the herbs briefly in a bowl of water with a splash of white vinegar. This helps remove bacteria or pesticides.
3. Dry Thoroughly:
Lay the herbs on a clean towel in a warm, dry spot away from direct sunlight to preserve their natural oils.
4. Storage:
Once completely dry, store in a clean, airtight container away from moisture and light.
Stones and Crystals:
1. Water Cleaning:
Rinse the stone with warm water (if the stone is water-safe; avoid water for stones like selenite or malachite).
2. Salt Bath:
For hard stones, you can soak them in a bowl of sea salt or Himalayan salt for a few hours.
3. Energy Cleansing:
Place the stone under the light of the full moon or smudge it with sage or incense to cleanse its energy.
4. Avoid Harsh Chemicals:
Never use soap or harsh cleaners on stones, as this can damage their surface.
Feathers:
1. Disinfect Safely:
Place the feather in a sealed bag with a small amount of food-grade diatomaceous earth for 24-48 hours to kill any mites or parasites. You can also use a diluted solution of disinfectant and soak the feather for some minutes.
2. Wash Gently:
Soak the feather in warm water with a mild soap or baby shampoo. Avoid scrubbing, as it can damage the feather.
3. Dry Naturally:
Lay the feather flat on a towel and let it air dry completely. You can shape it with a toothbrush you no longer use.
Getting Dirty
According to stone tape theory the soil, stone, and wood around us preserve an imprint of our history, a record of sorts. Soil is important, it holds the residual energy of a place and preserves it forever. Practitioners can tap into the qualities of various types of dirt to integrate those energies into their work. The different types of magickal soil are as follows:
Crossroads Dirt: Decision making, road opening, luck, success, opportunity, opens doors to other realms, offering to Hekate and other crossroads deities
Highway/Railroad Dirt: Movement, relocation, travel, speeds up any working
Cemetery/Graveyard Dirt: Healing, protection, prosperity, luck, love, baneful workings, assistance from the dead, offering to death deities
Backyard Dirt: Purification, protection, peace, workings with/for the home/family, traditionally collected from the four corners of the yard
Enemies House Dirt: Hatred, animosity, revenge, conflict, used in baneful casting
Bank Dirt: Drawing money, prosperity, good fortune, good luck, security, used in mojo bags
Hospital Dirt: Healing, health, and recovery as well as sickness, injury, and illness. Intent is everything.
Casino Dirt: Good luck, chance, change in circumstances, chaos, loss, ruin, intent matters
Bar/Pub Dirt: Confusion, delirium, accidents, distraction, fun, chaos, seduction, short term
Schoolyard/Playground Dirt: New beginnings, joy, optimism, playfulness, protection of children
University Campus Dirt: Knowledge, memory, intellect, intelligence, wisdom, higher consciousness
Market Dirt: Business, income, networking, wealth, community, communication, commerce
Banquet Hall Dirt: Celebration, love, communication, togetherness
Forest Dirt: Nature, balance, abundance, peace, serenity, the element of Earth, offering to nature deities like Cernunnos or Pan
Courthouse Dirt: Justice, legal issues, cases resolve in your favor, binding, banishing, punishment
Prison/Jail Dirt: Imprisonment, entrapment, restraint, binding, banishing, punishment
Murder Scene Dirt: Death, destruction, devastation, used in the most potent and wicked curses and baneful workings
Key Magick
Keys have very specific magickal symbology and are of great importance in many practices. Keys are representational of unlocking, road opening, wisdom, protection, higher consciousness, different realms/dimensions, and ancient knowledge.
To use a key in your magickal practice you must first assign it a purpose. This can be done through energy work, chanting, meditation, etc. Once this is complete you can keep the enchanted key on your person, your altar, hung over a doorway, use it in spellwork, etc.
Uses:
• Wear a key as jewelry to discover wisdom.
• A gold key wards against the evil eye.
• Three keys on a chain bring health, wealth, and love.
• A key will bring good luck as long as it does not fit any lock you own.
• Wear an old key to discover a secret or find a lost object.
• Keys as jewelry promote fertility.
• A door key placed upside down near the bed will banish nightmares and ensure a peaceful night's sleep.
• Touch a key to each door and window while willing away negative forces, then hang by a red string over the hearth.
• The clinking sound of keys may emulate the ringing of a bell and can be used to cleanse a space.
• Wear a key to earn the auspices of gatekeeper spirits.
• A key may also be buried at a crossroads with an offering, asking for the doors to fortune be unlocked.
• Keys can be used to remove mental blockages and aid meditation.
• If the key has a padlock, it can be used in binding rituals. To bind a lover, have them secretly walk over a padlock and then lock it out of their sight.
